Keep in mind he’s no a particular fan of Dreamworks Animation, with their recent lack luster releases, but he was totally blown away with Kung Fu Panda (claiming Pixar greatness, i.e. Incredibles good). He’s say it has heart, something lacking in recent DA releases, and that it surprised him.
I only hope this is true, as I feel that as soon a Dreamworks Animation made the leap to 3D, that their movies slowly decreased in overall quality (not animation but story, characters, etc.).
Now if only Disney would stop making crap CG films.
I am excited for Kung Fu Panda. It does look quite good, and now if Jerry Beck is saying it’s good, it must be pretty good. He put Ratatouille up on a very high pedestal.
Just saw the trailer on YouTube. I looked out for the usual Dreamworks shticks, and most of them were still there- use of ‘popular’, well-known music, emphasis on gags and slapstick, use of big names like Jack Black…The only different thing is that the idea is actually original. For once.
I think it’s just the trailer, they need to trail their usual target. But this is the first Dreamworks (except Shrek) film with it’s own style, beautiful settings, colors.
And, I admit, I’m loving those characters, more than the madagascar or the hedge gang.
These positive critics makes me hope for a good film. But… what effect it will have on WALL-E? scared…
A positive review for this particular film surprised me, especially seeing as, after the release of DreamWorks’ latest trailer for Kung Fu Panda, I disregarded the film as just another piece of “genius” by the studio in question. In fact, before-hand… I wouldn’t have given a care if I were to have never seen this production for as long as I lived. However, after reading the afore-mentioned review, I’m beginning to have second thoughts…
Truth be told, I was as excited to see Kung Fu Panda (when I first heard about it) as any kid who was on the verge of having a conniption if he/she didn’t get to the theater on time. The basic premise sounded promising, the character designs were bouncy and fairly intriguing, and the overall conceptual art was stylish and colorful. (Seriously, just take a glance at that concept art. It’s freakin’ beautiful! I almost wish I could have been a part of that department while this film was in its early development stages.) The latest trailer threw me off quite a bit, but now I’m interested in seeing the picture again… thanks to the “good news”, as it were.
Yeeaaah, the trailer I saw in theaters made it look like another… I don’t even have a name for it. Another Madagascar-type movie (same cartoon squarishness, amirite?), but to be fair some of the trailers for Ratatouille were terrible as far as showing what the movie is actually like goes. I still saw it because PIXAR!!1, but nothing in the commercials suggested it would be full of emotional depth.
…But this Kung Fu Panda has the aforementioned squarishness and Angelina Jolie in it, and also, is called Kung Fu Panda. So I don’t know, man. I just don’t know.
I’m hoping for the best, but the trailer didn’t really appeal to me. That said, one can not put too much weight in a trailer, as everyone but Pixar seems to dumb down trailers, especially for animation.
I guess I’m in the minority here, but I really enjoyed Over The Hedge for what it was, which is a sweet, simple, fun feature. A “light movie”. More like that (and no more Shrek movies) would be fine in my eyes for DW.
Yep, you’re right- it does sound as though the trailer doesn’t do the film justice.
But, unfortunately, that’s all I have to go on as to whether or not I will see the film. It’s not like with Pixar- they’ve got such an amazing track record, that even if the trailer isn’t that great, you know you’re not wasting your money.
With Dreamworks, on the other hand, they have not convinced me that any of their previous features were worth my £5, so a lacklustre trailer from a company with a bad past just isn’t going to do it for me, no matter what the critics say.
Doesn’t mean I won’t be seeing it on TV later on, though.
although i don’t hate Dreamworks films, I understand Anyway this will be the first Dreamworks feature (except Shrek1-2-3) I’ll see in theater thanks to the critics hype… I hope my 5 € won’t be wasted (even if it’s less then 5£, but MORE than 5$ )
With Jack Black starring, there’s a major possibility I"ll go see it for the humor and “lightness”. It depends though. I saw the trailer a few days ago, and I gotta admit, I was giggling pretty hard!
uuuuuuh, i thought that movie looked BEYOND dumb . maybe i just hate asian stereotypes, or maybe my deep hatred of jack black, but i dont care what this guy says. my expectations are loo-oo-oow
True, but I think I heard those same words when it came down to Shrek and Shark Tale vs THe Incredibles. The first two I mentioned had well known actors, but I think most can agree that the Incredibles was a far better film.
I don’t believe it… yet… For proof, I’ll wait until it comes on a Starz channel or until the wide release and read your comments. When my I saw the trailer, my brother and I exchanged glances like it was the dumbest stuff of cinemadom. Who knew?!
