Kung Fu Panda actually good!?!

To each his own I guess. WALL-E’s definitely in my top 3 Pixar films (with Incredibles and Finding Nemo).

That said, I’d rank Kung Fu Panda right behind those 3 in my all-time favorite animated films list. Loved it.

Personally, I liked El Dorado and Spirit both a small bit better than Kung Fu Panda. However, Kung Fu Panda is definitely their best 3D flick.

To all the Kung Fu Panda fans, I have just one thing to say to you: [spoil]SKADOOSH![/spoil]

I actually thought that Kung Fu Panda was very good, before I went I thought that this may be a usual comedy movie where just the funny parts in it are the actual adverts themself, but Kung Fu panda is actually very good.

great design, great colours, pretty good storyline. definitely the best i’ve seen of dreamworks. i was impressed. i lovedddd the opening sequence and ending the most (as a sucker for 2d animation) and also the stylistic approach from japanese culture (the film backdrops looked like a hokusai painting)

you can definitely see the pixar inspiration creeping in - the funky 2d credits, the inspirations from other artistic styles, the DECENT storylines ;p

the only part i can find fault in is the character design. Dang that snake was ugly! and the evil tiger thing, yuckkkk. didn’t really scream ‘tiger’ to me. i think dream works have spawned some disgusting character designs…

ANTZ

EWWWWWWW

A SHARK’S TALE

-shudder-
thank god they didn’t model the KFP characters on the voice actors…a lesson perhaps learnt from a shark’s tale!

madagascar

Dang, the zebra / giraffe are ooogly!

Edited for language. – Mitch

hollietree- I agree, DreamWorks can make some UGLY, uninspired character designs. The only one’s that stood out where the Madagascar characters, everything else they make looks like generic CGI and is just plain gross at times. My favorite example of horrible character designs would be Shark Tale, Bee Movie and Antz, slapping an actor’s face on an animal is a no-no!!
On-Topic: I didn’t see anything awesome about Kung Fu Panda, sure it wasn’t bad or dreadul like everything else DreamWorks releases, but it wasn’t anything out of this world. Turns out, DreamWork’s bar is set so low, the mediocre looks great. :stuck_out_tongue:

Kung Fu Panda was way too cliched for me, and as it’s been said the characters are too ugly and uninspired, like all DreamWorks films. Still, the voice-acting wasn’t too bad, and there were some funny lines, but it’s still at par for a Katzenberg product.

Eh, I thought this piece of crap only attracted fans thanks to the renowned actions playing as its voice actors. It has always been like that, paying tons of money just to get some superstar, not to lend his voice, but to lend his credibility. People go watch “Kung Fu Panda” not because of the ‘unique’ aspects of an animated kung-fu flick, but because Jack Rockin’ Black was in it! Same goes with Antz (Sylvester Stallion), Shark Tale (Will Rappin’ Smith) and Shrek (wow, Mike Austin Powers :unamused: )!

Per-lease, Dreamworks Animation, can you please be a little less pitiful?

Eh, eh, dun liddat one, leh! (Sorry couldn’t resist, my ‘bradder’ from across the Causeway. You call it Singlish, we call it Manglish, but it’s both the same language! )
Sorry if I’m making assumptions here, but have you actually seen the movie? I thought KFP was Dreamworks’ best movie in a long time! Granted, I agree with you that they could have done without the celebrity voices (not to mention the Furious Five is woefully underused and just an excuse to milk publicity), but this is a step in the right direction. Gone are the lame pop-culture puns (with the exception of [spoil]Skadoosh[/spoil]!), scatological humour and bland, uninspired character designs. They’re still quite ugly, but at least they look waaay better than Bee Movie (boring as heck) and Shark Tale (atrocious)! And I liked the fact that slipped in some Chinese puns (Master Oogway, anyone?) and were respectful (in fact, reverent) of Asian culture and traditions. I loved the scene where Po was running around the hall recounting all the mythical fables of the various artefacts (they actually detailed these tales in great length on the main website).
The best part about KFP was its beautiful settings. They looked like they were straight from Chinese water-paintings and on-par with Pixar and the Disney classics for background designs.
I could wax lyrical about this but I think I’ll reserve my opinions for a future review where I’d have more time to prepare. I know, Dreamworks is largely a hack studio and this could be just a fluke shot, but irregardless of the quality of its sequels (or any future DW films), I will always hold KFP in high regard up there with Shrek as one of their best movies to rival Pixar.

BTW, for any KFP fans, you’d be glad to know the Furious Five will get more screen-time in the upcoming ‘Secrets of the Furious Five’ Direct-To-Video companion film (the announcement said it was a sequel, but I highly doubt a legit one would miss a theatrical run, not to mention they’ve in fact only started on it). It would also make DVD history as being the first DTV to be released on the same date simultaneously as the original film’s DVD bow.
Check out the link here. I hope at least it’s a short feature-length of about 45 minutes instead of a 5-min short film.

I nearly fell a sleep while watching Kung Fu Panda, I need to watch it again. The movie was okay, but Sherk is always better.

This might be me, but I loved Kung Fu Panda whole lot more than Shrek.

I think Kung-Fu Panda is one of DreamWork’s better movies.
It’s a shame, though, that after something as good as Kung-Fu Panda, Monsters vs. Aliens might be a big letdown (in my opinion)

KFP wasn’t really anything special. It was OK. I think it’s my second favorite DreamWorks film.

It’s a shame when a studio’s second best movie or (best in some people’s opinions) is just nothing special, that’s DreamWorks’ case. Just for the record, I liked Shrek a lot more, as for the sequels, that’s a different story…

Lest we forget how misleading trailers can be, I mean it is still a Paramount/Dreamworks appeal to LCD humor. I’ll give it a chance.

The plot for KFP says it at the title. There was nothing special about KFP; only the laughs were good, but when watching KFP you would expect martials arts moves being used. That why KFP isn’t that special, where as Sherk was much better and the plot was less predictable when watching the film.

I think the reason why I like KFP more than Shrek is probably I love the characters of KFP more, I find the laughs of KFP more funny, and the dialogue of KFP is amazing to me.

With all due respect, Is that really a fair assessment of a film’s quality? I mean, couldn’t the same criticism be leveled at Cars?

Well the quality of the film was good, but the way the characters were animated weren’t done porbaly. I myslef didn’t like Cars, I would say that KFP and Cars had predictable plots and tilte gave hints on the overall plot.

KFP’s plot was a bit predictable, but the laughs were great and the characters were loveable. There was just something about it that made me smile and I will be sure to pick up the DVD.

Let’s hope they don’t pull a Shrek on KFP, it doesn’t deserve it.
