I do like pretty much all of the other WDAS movies though. I have not seen all of them though (Not all of the features from the 40s, 70s and 80s, mostly). I’ve seen nearly all of them though and Chicken Little and perhaps Home On the Range are the only ones I recall disliking…
It’s too bad John Lasseter didn’t get to help fix Chicken Little. Imagine what a good Chicken Little could have been like! I have. I’ve tried re-imagining one with nicer/less mean characters. We could have seen his mom die at the beginning but have her be his inspiration throughout the film while Buck Cluck struggles to get it right. You could have Chicken Little and his friends grow up to be not just outcasts, but geeks obsessed with intelligence. They could use science to figure out why “the sky fell” or something. Oakey Oaks could be more like a Mickey’s Toon Town place. And instead of having the aliens be aliens to an already-strange world, why not just have them seem like weirdoes to everyone else? They could have been strange aliens obsessed with exploring outer space, and Kirby could have been part of Chicken Little’s clique. And so on. (Maybe).
Until recently, I would’ve said Home on the Range or Chicken Little. However, I re-watched The Black Cauldron a couple of weeks ago and it was so much worse than I remembered. I realize the film has its fans, but it is definitely not for me. I’m not a big fan of the fantasy setting already unless it’s done well (ie. almost all Disney films that use it) and this film didn’t change my opinion. Uninspired animation, boring story, boring characters. For me, at least, I just can’t find many positives.
I will admit I do have a bit of a soft spot for Meet the Robinsons. I’m at least okay with it, if not more so. At the same time, I can admit how much of a crazily wacky film it is. I’m also fine with Home on the Range; I got a few good laughs from that one. I suppose Chicken Little has it’s brief moments of silliness, somewhat…but hey, what can you do?
There’s a handful of Disney films I truly love, and the rest I either like or am indifferent to, and there are a few that are a bit below that last level. Anyhow, I think I’ve been able to smile or laugh at least once even in the ones I may have (sadly) not quite enjoyed all that much.
Home on the Range isn’t a fantastic movie by any measure. However, I think it gets more hate than it deserves. It has a fantastic soundtrack, and I adore the character design.
And Chicken Little is more silly than anything, I like it. But not my favourite or brilliant in anyway.
