This is the second animated feature from the studio that brought us Happy Feet. I think it looks incredible! (I think anything that has really loud music in the trailer like 9 looks good, but whatever. ) Happy Feet was very well done, so I have high expectations for this one. This won’t be nearly as good as TS3 though.

Wow, I haven’t even heard of this movie! I voted yes though, because Happy Feet was very well done, and I expect good things from this studio.

It is exciting to see them back!

I’ve seen the trailer for this a couple of time in cinemas, and I kept meaning to get around to making this topic, but clearly someone is more dedicated than me.

In answer to the question - yes. In fact, the trailer is the best-looking trailer since the one for Return of the King (and let’s face it, you can’t beat “This day, we fight!”). Seriously, the footage in the trailer is amazing, and if the rest of the movie looks anywhere near that good, then this will be the best-looking film of 2010. The anthropomorphisation seems to be kept to a minimum (well, with one exception that will be obvious to anyone watching the trailer - it looks cool, though, so it might work, even if it doesn’t make sense). It reminded me of the movie of Watership Down for that reason.

Of course, looks are only one aspect of the film. We aren’t given much of an idea of story from the trailer, though it is based on a series of books, so anyone really wanting to know plot details could probably find out from there (though not necessarily - a certain movie about dragons springs to mind). Assuming the movie is fairly accurate to the books, then I am hopeful, since the story presumably works in one medium.

One problem that did stick out for me is the voice acting. It’s very underwhelming, especially compared to TS3 (assuming it keeps the quality from the first two films) and, to a lesser extent, HTTYD. In particular, something about the main character’s voice (I don’t think the character is named in the trailer, but I’m fairly sure he’s the hero) just really bugged me, and some of the others suffered from some fairly flat delivery. Of course, even the best voice actors mess up some lines, so perhaps this is nothing to be worried about.

The song they use in the trailer is awesome. I have no idea if they made it for this film or not, but I hope it finds its way into the end credits of the film itself.

All in all, I am very excited about this, moreso than I ever have been for a non-Pixar CGI film. I intend to make it to the first screening in my area, hoping that the film lives up to my expectations.

I just watched the trailer; wow! It was really great. Owls are pretty darn cool.

This film should be very epic!

Talking owlsssss

I must definitely see this one - are the books any good? A friend of mine has read some, I’m still searching for them.

Also, isn’t it made by Animal Logic? Those guys are also gonna make the Bone movie. What, I thought that was cool.

I happen to live a bus-ride away from the studio that made this film (It’s Animal Logic). We even had employees that worked on this production come to my school to give a talk on jobs in the animation industry (but no exclusive cliffhanger clips/previews, I’m afraid!). They referred to it as “Legends of Ga’Hoole” and I was like “HUH?” :~o

Anyway, the footage here skirts dangerously to Uncanny Valley territory, and it does seem at parts they are merely ‘showing off’ the visuals when the story has barely been touched on. But I’m willing to give this a chance. I immensely enjoyed Happy Feet (even with its disturbing last act), and I’m hoping this will likewise blow my mind!

And like Badger says, has anyone read the books and can vouch for their awesomeness?

What I love about this film is that, even though it has an A-list cast of voice actors (Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving, Helen Mirren, etc.), they’re not really showing off the voices as just celebrities. They’re actually character acting for the roles they’re portraying. Actual voice acting in character? In a non-Disney animated film? What is this madness?

That, and the visuals look amazing. Also, the movie is being directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen). I haven’t read the books, but I now plan on at least looking at the first one before this film comes out. Can’t wait to see it.

New Behind the Scenes Featurette Just Released!

More footage, and a bit of a story background now
this just increased my excitement for it tenfold! September can’t come quickly enough

Wow, this really reminds me of Mouse Guard
except Ga’Hoole probably came first as the books

Interesting things to note in the trailer (If you’ve already seen the featurette, just go ahead and highlight the spoiler tags):

[spoil]- Nice movie frame behind Mr Snyder. I wonder who is ‘Metal Beak’

  • Almost every scene is bathed in an etheral glow.

  • And there’s lots of ‘grinder sparks’
one of my favourite movie effects
but where do they come from?

  • And fog! And smoke! Again, from where?

  • The elf owl sighing is so adorable!

  • Almost every owl has an Australian accent.

  • Lots of falling and staring down great heights
 like Happy Feet.

  • The featurette’s music sounds amazing
 hope it’s on the soundtrack.[/spoil]

Yup
seems very exciting! If only there was a world with burning sparks everywhere and Australian-accented owls
 :frowning:

I’m gonna borrow the books posthaste!

I thought Happy Feet was sooooooo boring! And this movie looks boring too. But I do like the owl’s accents.

[spoil]Actually, Jim Sturgess (Soren) is British.[/spoil]

Regarding the accents, I was under the impression that the studio was actually Australian on some level. Certainly, in all those “don’t pirate Australian movies because you’re destroying the future of our film industry” they always show a poster of Happy Feet.

As epic as the sequences look, I’d have to agree with you. Maybe it’s the surreal dream-like compositions or the constant slow-mos
they kind of lull you into a sleepy mood
 :stuck_out_tongue:

Basil: Which was why I said ‘almost’. But really, a lot of Aussies sound like Brits anyway. I mean, Russell freakin’ Crowe sounded Irish in a recent movie!

You’re right. It’s being produced by Animal Logic, an Oz animation and special-effects studio. They’re only 15 minutes from my house, but I’ve never seen their facility yet!

Yeah, something tells me the full movie won’t have quite as large a percentage of slow motion as the trailer.

'Nuff said. I honestly think the movie is going to completely ruin the books. You CAN’T make one movie from a series of fifteen books and still keep it intact. I’m a fan of the books and while I WOULD like to see a movie, I don’t want to see it in CGI (shiney CGI at that), Australian accents “flying” everywhere (I don’t have a problem with that, but why for Ga’Hoole? WHY!?), and possible lack of my favorite character, Mrs. Plithiver. I loove Mrs. P X3 . She’s too awesome. It really won’t be the same for me. The plot of the movie just seems completely wrong. Kludd shoves Soren AFTER they’re BOTH fledged and they BOTH fall and get captured?! [url]Nostalgia Critic says 'No!' - YouTube

@Esmedes: In case you didn’t know, this movie is only based on the first three books of the series, and with all book to movie transitions, there’s obviously going to be some cuts and changes. Having not read the books, I still think this movie looks like it could be very well done.

Besides, a very loose adaptation is generally agreed to have worked well for a certain other recent movie about flying animals. Massive changes from the book are always going to be a cause for concern, but don’t necessarily hurt the movie and may in fact help it.

Second trailer just released. (click this text)

And we get a little bit of an action clip here. Man, this just pumps me up even more.

Thanks for the link Basil!

I’m now reading the first book, ‘The Capture’, and it’s nice to see the characters you imagine in your head on-screen. I really like the depiction of Gylfie, Kludd, Eglantine, and Grimble
though Soren looks a bit too similar to baby-faced Mumble Happyfeet (even his voice actor Jim Sturgess sounds like Elijah Wood!).

Favourite parts of the trailer
when Eglantine talks and Gylfie sighs in relief (they really got the ‘Cute Factor’ down pat), [spoil]the battlefield with the burning embers[/spoil] at 00:43, the [spoil]rain-flight[/spoil] at 1:40, the [spoil]dive attack from above[/spoil] at 1:52 (which I bet would be mind-blowing in IMAX), and the [spoil]Ga’Hoole tree[/spoil] at 2:09 (If you’ve seen the trailer, you can go ahead and read the Spoiler Tags).

If does look a little show-offy, though. I would’ve loved more talky scenes and the use of a pop song as the ‘climax piece’ of the trailer just annoys me (Why couldn’t they have used the likes of Immediate Music/X-Ray Dog/Future World Music ochestrals?).

But as Grimble would say, I want to “believe” this will be good. Hopefully, it’ll fly (pun unintended) with us.

EDIT: First poster released:

I like the water effects, but they shoulda gived Soren a more fierce and determined look instead of ‘moon-blinked’ eyes

Yeah, the facial expression is a bit of a turn-off for me, but other than that, I’m liking the poster. The water effects are amazing, and the dark, mysterious quality really fits the focus on owls.
