Well, some of you might remember that in the Outtakes of Toy Story 2, The Aliens are hanging as a decoration on the Pizza Planet truck that was featured at the near-end of the movie and the aliens talk about what they are going to do after/ what they did in the past. One of The Aliens says that he was on the letterbox copy of Toy Story grabbing Sheriff Woody’s ankle. What is that specific alien talking about? I searched hours on Google Images and did not find the letterbox copy of Toy Story anywhere.
Letterbox means the widescreen version of the film. They may have been referencing the scene where Woody tries to keep Buzz from being pulled out of the claw machine by Sid, but the aliens grab him and force them both up (so if you were watching that scene in widescreen you would supposedly see one of the alien’s hands grab his ankle). If not, then they probably just made it up.
I’m not sure a letter box copy even exists (remember, letterbox isn’t just widesceen, but 4:3 with bars ie a “letter” shaped box to make it into widescreen, they only have to do that for VHS)…they would have had to be referring to the VHS, because DVD wasn’t really out yet when toy 2 was being made. But yeah, he just means the wide screen version instead of full screen which crops off the sides. If you own any of the dvds you should have the right aspect ratio.
But I think it was just made up, as far as I can remember, the alien grabbing woody’s ankle was always in the shot, widescreen or not.
They did refer to the letterboxed VHS version.
Toy Story was released in two versions on VHS: 4:3 and letterboxed 16:9.
That said, I have never seen the 4:3 version, so I have no idea whether or not you can see that particular alien in the 4:3 version.
I remember hearing one of the filmmakers say that when they when they made Toy Story they couldn’t make it as wide as they wanted to, due the limited computer technology, and made it just as large as they could.
Huh, so Toy Story was released in both a full and wide screen version when it was first released? Wow, I actually didn’t know that, I just assumed that most movies on VHS were always released in full screen version or at least animated films were anyway, we only have the full screen version of the original VHS copy…
