The whole "love your legwarmers " “nice ascot” joke was left out of the junior novelization of Toy Story 3. It is an adult joke.
Oh… I did not get that this is that type of joke at all.
I actually think it is really funny because they are playing up that fact that Ken is such a clothes loving, not the most stereotypicaly masculine, but yet still masculine kind of guy, and just the fact that he wears an ascot is hilarious. Ascots have been the punch line of jokes for years! Just look at Fred from Scooby Doo; pop culture has never stopped making jokes about his ascot.
I agree that because the joke was over played in the trailers, it may not have been as funny in theaters. However, I do not think that this joke was intended to have some sort of sexual inuendo. Pixar was clearly just joking about the clothing styles of the 1970s and 1980s, periods that are so often parodied today; people so often look back these days and think “Oh my goodness, why did I ever wear that.” I really can’t believe that people would even attempt to put Pixar in such an inappropriate and low humour light.
But you know what? We really could twist anything these days and make it inappropriate. Let’s all agree now to stop doing this to Pixar.
I second that. It’s not that big of a deal if you ask me, just a little joke slipped in. It seems like most animated movies or TV shows have adult jokes slipped in them.
love70ways, I respectfully disagree with you. Pixar has in the past thrown in adult jokes because honestly, its only fair to the parents to have some innuendo to entertain them. Look at the first toy story, when potato head takes off his lips and hits his butt with them while slinky is praising woody. Obviously an innuendo, and while you may be on to something, this is definitely meant to be an innuendo of some sort as well.
Then you’ve missed the joke, clearly. It was intended as a sexual joke. And to be honest, jokes like ‘laser envy’ are just as ‘bad’ - this isn’t us accusing Pixar of being smutty, this is just the sort of humour they sometimes use. You can tell that it’s intended as that sort of joke because of the delivery, and because of the fact that 90% of adults took it as an innuendo. If it wasn’t intended as one, but was being widely received as one among focus groups/the rest of the production team, it’d have been changed/removed. If it wasn’t intended as an innuendo, at least one person still must’ve said ‘That sounds like a sex joke’ at some point. And so if it wasn’t intended as one, it’d have been altered or removed or something.
This isn’t a coincidence, they definately played it out to be a dirty joke. Didn’t anyone notice the record-scratching sound after?
On another note, I still don’t get the laser envy joke.
Laser envy/penis envy. It makes sense in context, of course.
Anyone else a tad concerned that the name for male genitals is censored as ‘little boy bits’? Surely ‘male bits’ would be less…paedo-y.

Its just a riff on an old saying. You could take it as implying it, or at face value. if taken literally its completely innocent.
I didn’t even notice that joke until a few years ago, and then I explained it to my mom. 
I didn’t get it at first because I didn’t know what an ascot was.

In the middle of the movie, they totally made a Scooby-Doo reference out of it.
Just watched the new episode of White Collar. A character wore an ascott and he took a lot of heat for it.
I’m telling you, an ascott is a joke in itself.

The thing about Pixar is that they DO throw in some innuendo in their films, but they are generally very subtle about it. These movies are meant to be enjoyed by children and adults alike and in these types of movies, the best innuendo is meant for the adults only and should go completely unnoticed by the children watching the movie.
This is one of the things I often find offensive about the Shrek (and several other non-Pixar) movies is that the innuendo is generally not as subtle and there’s a whole lot more of it. Those types of jokes shouldn’t be carrying your movie, especially if it’s a movie that children will be watching over and over.
However, even though Pixar uses them, they do seem to try to keep the innuendo to a minimum and very subtle. Kids aren’t meant to get the double meaning to these jokes.
There have been several examples of subtle innuendo in Pixar films listed in this thread already, but one that is very similar to the “ascot” joke is in Finding Nemo, where Gurgle says, “Don’t you realize we are swimming in our own sh”, and he’s cut off with, “Shhh, here he comes!” Like with what Barbie is saying, Gurgle doesn’t actually say it, but you know what the word really is.
There are also a lot of these types of “hidden-meaning” jokes in Cars, like when the two little groupie cars (Tia and Mia) “flash” Lightning McQueen and also when Lightning is talking about Doc’s Piston Cup and Mater says, “He did WHAT in his cup?” I’m sure there’s a list somewhere online if you really wanted to look them all up. However, my intention is not to bash Pixar for any of this, because as I’ve said, they really does a good job of keeping it subtle, and I do appreciate that.
