So, what does everyone think of
this. I mean, I don’t think you can say you hate it, it’s just a classic.
And the sound clip from the
Pixar logo at the start, is that a specially recorded for Pixar piece, because I was watching some kids TV (
), and then they used that piece of instrumental music for the announcement of the winner.
I do remember someone important at Pixar (no idea who) saying about how they had a relative
with a lamp like Luxo which he played with when he was young because he imagined it as a face and body, so that
influenced him with Luxo. I think. But don’t quote me on it!
I remember seeing someone say that on an
Extras DVD, either of Toy Story 2 or Monsters, Inc., I think…
I’ve always read on the PIXAR site that Lasseter got the
inspiration from an object at his very own workstation: A Luxo lamp. Add a smaller Lamp, and a Ball. (And a
power Outlet) . . . plus a great story, and you have Luxo Jr.!
But who knows?
Maybe the kid story is true (maybe it was Lasseter, or one of his kids . . .)

I heard that too, that Lasseter had just wanted to get started on the animating,
so he took the first thing he could find good enough (a luxo) and animated it in a short. Voila.
I really like this one! I think it’s so cute how the lamps come alive and start
playing with that ball. and I felt so bad when the little one popped it!

Is that how it started? Heheh. I’ve always loved that
little short, and now I know how it all began…

Well, to be honest Mitch,
it started with another one, Adventures of Andre an Wally b. But that was under Lucasarts not Pixar.
It’s
sometimes funny to watch the cables, the physics are very poor at some points, but still cool.
Yeah, Pixar has
advanced so much since then…Ah, nostalgia!

Ahh…I see.
Heheh – cables. Yeah, I
still enjoy the short as well, even if the technology isn’t as well “camouflaged” or detailed as their
(Pixar’s) other shorts.

It’s still amazing to think when it was made
computers were just nothing basically.

Really? I thought that they had a good amount of technology back then – at
least, just enough to get them going. The short sure looks good for being an “oldie”, though.
I think what Luxo means is that
back in 1986 no one in the general public considered the notion that computers could be used for something fun
and meaningful, and not just for numbers, and spreadsheets, etc.

Ahh…I see. I stand corrected.
Interesting information, by the
way…

LOL yeah, back in 1986, think about
it, IBM’s PC a newish product.
