Well, what do you think, I use a PC, but I am
desperate to switch and am at the stage of doing so.

I’ve never used anything but a PC/laptop, and have no
major complaints. I’m content with what it can do for me, and see no reason to change. The downside of this is I
have no valid opinion on Mac or Linux.
You and me both!
They say that if you’re an
artist, it’s better to have a Mac instead of a PC. We bought a brand new Dell about 2 years ago, so it’ll be a
long time before we can afford to make a switch.
Whenever I leave to be on my own, I’d like to get a Mac
for myself.
Another reason I wish I had a Mac is because for most job openings, Pixar asks for/prefers
people who are experienced with them. Darn it.

Yeah, Macs are soooooooooooooo much more productive and
the Apple software rules, they also look great and the operating system looks sooooooo cool.
All their
applications seem to do more as well, eg, make a calender from highlighted pictures in the picture viewer and
stuff.
Here’s the new king of the Mac’s, Mac
Pro.
Here’s the
desktop look.

I am a staunch PC user. I have a long history with Macs, mostly because all through my
schooling until graduation from high school we had Mac labs. So I’m quite familiar with them, and they don’t
like me. They’ve lost every major project I’ve tried to do on them, which people keep telling me can’t happen
because “Macs are too awesome for that,” but clearly something’s going wrong.
Nay, I prefer
my PCs, for the following reasons:
baby. I built her three years ago, and she’s still running strong. She’s very upgradeable, too, so I can
basically keep swapping out bits and pieces indefinitely. The only drawback to the uber-sweet custom case I have
is that it is HUGE and HEAVY (to the point where I have been known to use it as an extra chair), but it is tres
gorgeous. It’s purple metal with a clear acrylic side door so you can see the LED-lit fans on the inside.
Apple doesn’t like you getting inside their products or letting you upgrade them. I like upgrading things. I
like opening up the box and putting things together. I like seeing the memory jump from 512 MB to 1 GB and still
having all my settings in place. I like troubleshooting hardware problems (which crop up occasionally after a
few years- my hard drive’s actually 4 years old, and in need of replacement, sadly…). PCs allow me to do
this, Macs do not.
gritty command line stuff than Windows really allows. Some people have told me that for this reason, I should
prefer Macs, since OSX is UNIX-based. Here’s where they’re wrong again: I like Linux. Linux is happy, Linux
is friendly, Linux comes with Tux Racer and has a penguin as its mascot. And yeah, it’s much harder to use than
OSX. And I’m okay with that. For starters, I fail to see why I should pay mega bucks for a UNIX-based system
when I can download the DVD ISOs for SuSE Linux 10.0 for free and install it on my baby. Second, I have heard
OSX described as, “Happy bouncy jelly-bean wannabe Linux.” Not to sound pretentious or anything,
because I’m really not trying to be so, but I’m a computer science major. I may not be as hardcore as some
people, but I’m too hardcore for OSX.
couldn’t play all my computer games?
…so,
that’s about all I have to say. It’s a heated debate, and I’ve often been flamed for my opinions, but they
haven’t changed yet. ![]()
I’m not going to flame you, but that
Mac is sheer beauty. People may say cheese grater, but it’s just amazing. ![]()
I’ve never tried a Mac, and despite
their pretty looks and interesting technology, I don’t think I’d swap my PC for a Mac. Mac’s have their place
in arty stuff, and making videos and things, but when it comes to something nice and rounded, that’s easy to use
for people like me who don’t really know what they’re doing when it comes to technology, then a PC is juuuust
fine.
Gotta love the Mac because of their heavy influence on
PIXAR and such, but I’ve been PC boy all my life.
I’m not going to deny that Macs are
sleek. They’re quite sleek and professional looking. But Thirteen’s prettier. ![]()
As for the GUI, eh.
I find that most recent versions of Linux are close enough on the shiny factor.
Actually
lizardgirl, Apple pride themselves on being so much easier to use than PC’s. Hence their
“out-of-the-box” saying, where you plug it in, press power, and your away.
Plus I’m just bored
of looking at Windows, and the growing rebellion against PC and growing Mac sales ar proving that people are also
bored of Windows.
Plus, the new computer buyers will say, Apple makes my iPod, so I’ll get that Apple Mac
computer as well.
Every now and then, something on my PC goes all screwy and I have to
end up shutting it down and starting it up again. The Macs I’ve used at my college never go bad. They don’t
freeze up on me, they don’t quit out of programs unexpectedly, and they manage to run the programs that my PC
can’t.
Oh yes. I love the nice wide screen the Mac Pro
has.
Also, one of my profs told us how the Mac’s design makes it simple to take
apart.
~~=oP
I’ve always owned a PC, but the lab room in my music faculty contains Macs that I use
when necessary (projects, compositions, online tests, etc.). Macs are pretty and all, but the mouse navigation
annoys me. I’m far to used to my PC than bothering to switch… not that rich anyways. My PC is just fine.
That’s
pretty much the way I feel, too. I respect Macs and Apple, and have even moreso since becoming a Pixar fan, but
I prefer using PCs. I can use a Mac well enough, and I don’t really dislike them, but when it’s all said and
done I just like PCs better. I don’t know how old or new the Macs I’ve used are, but I know that one of my
biggest complaints about them is the fact that the mice only have one button, which is really foreign and
uncomfortable to me.
As is probably the case with most people, if I’d grown up using Macs I’d most
certainly be the other way around, but… I didn’t!
Actually, your
looking at ?150 for a used G4 off ebay with monitor and stuff. ($220)
Yeah, but have you ever tried going to a store and buying
hardware for an Apple product? Try it sometime. You’d have to go to an Apple company store, not just any old
Staples or Best Buy. From the Apple website:
"Please keep in mind that not every part found in your
Apple product is available through DIY parts. Some typical parts that you can order include replacement
keyboards, mice, power cables, modem cables, earbuds, and internal batteries. Apple doesn’t offer parts that are
generally difficult to access or replace by customers."
In other words, the baby repairs you can do
yourself. But they won’t even let you do something as simple as replacing a hard drive. Heck, your warranty is
voided if you make any significant modifications without their written permission.
Yeah… speaking as
someone whose primary computer is one big modification, I couldn’t live like that.
I have quite
thoroughly embraced the open source mentality. Apple is about as anti-open source as they come (yes, I said it-
at least Microsoft writes for hardware you can upgrade and tailor to your liking, and works on multiple brands of
hardware, which is much more than we can say for Apple, and probably why Microsoft has the much larger share of
the market).
Oh, computer knock-down-drag-out fights. Very entertaining, to be sure. I got into a text
editor debate with a VI user when I walked into his house wearing an EMACS shirt. I love nerds.
That’s why God put eBay on
Earth.
Not like either of
us is going to change the other’s mind (because clearly you’re an Apple fan with the shiny icon, and I’m just
militantly anti-Apple for a lot of good reasons), but I feel like I shouldn’t have to resort to eBay for
computer parts. It’s the inherent lack of trust in the end user I find irritating- always have, probably always
will. So, until Apple makes its entire system less proprietary, I’m not particularly interested in a Mac for my
own purposes.
Now, to be fair, I’ll say it’s a good system for people who don’t know a lot about the
inner workings of a computer- all three of my housemates are prime examples of this. They think something should
work in a certain way, and they don’t really care how the system does it. They don’t have the patience to run
an entire system from a Bash terminal, and they just want everything simple and easy to use. OSX is stable,
simple, and shiny. It’s just not my kind of system.
Personally, I’m still keeping my eye out for the
case mod that allows you to have a false fish tank as the side door. I found it shortly
after I purchased the one I’m using, and I was sad because the fish tank door was
amazing. Sometimes, ridonkulously space-consuming things are worth it. ![]()
Wait, an actualy fishtank in your computer, or is that a term for something. LOL.
It’s not like a for real fish tank, since that’d just be
strange, but what they do is have a “tank” about an inch or two thick installed in the door. Inside
it’s filled most of the way with water, which to simulate the effect of a tank has a bubble machine sending tiny
bubbles upwards, and then usually there’ll also be a blue light at the bottom shining up through the water. Add
four or five plastic fish that can bop around and look cool, and you have a computer with a fake fish tank in the
side.
Here’s a picture of what I mean.
It’s madly cool.

I want one.
