Mary & Max

Has anyone heard of this animated indy film? Probably not, seeing it’s getting only a limited release Down Under. This was from the guy who brought you Harvie Krumpet, an Oscar-winning film for Best Animated Short Film back in 2004 and which I had the opportunity to see the last fifth on it on late-night telly one or two years ago.

So it’s basically more of that black-and-white claymation style with occasional colour highlights + quirky, touching, non-sequitur musings on life and love + endearing oddball characters with some form of mental disability (this time, Max is the one, with Asperger’s Syndrome) + lots of offensive gags and jokes littered throughout + a stellar cast of mostly Aussies (with the exception of Phillip Seymour Hoffman). It was selected to open the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, and premieres this Thursday in selected cinemas across Australia.

Warning: Some content may be unsuitable for underage or uptight viewers. I’d rate it a PG-13 at least.

Personally, I’m all for non-traditional animated films outside the Hollywood system, but I don’t quite know what to make of this. I mean, I like the sweet story of long-distance friendships and all, but what’s with the random onscreen and verbal vulgarities?

What do you guys think?

I want to see this so badly. I am a big fan of Harvie Krumpet and its bittersweet tone. Unfortunately, I’ll probably never be able to see this, since I live in the US.

I guess I should give Harvey another chance, then. Maybe I’m being too judgemental.
Get your hopes up, Bryko. Maybe if it’s successful enough here, it’ll venture overseas. At the very least, you’d be able to get a DVD purchase on Amazon.
