Mattel Answers Questions about their Toy Story 3 line-up!

PixarCollector.com sat down with Mattel to discuss their toyline.

Pixar Collector: Is there any likelihood that we’ll see some of the human characters, like Sid and Andy, featured in the toyline?

Mattel: Great Question! This is certainly something that we have considered. One reason why we have not made these characters in the past is that we work hard to make the line as authentic and accurate as possible. This includes working very closely with Disney to ensure that our characters are built to scale. For this reason, a human character could be challenging to work into the line…the toy would be huge! However, this is not to say that we won’t consider it in the future. If we do decide to develop one of the human characters, we would probably look at the 2" sector as the characters are more stylized and the scale is less exact.

Well they should know that if they’re going to do human characters that they wouldn’t have to be life sized. There were some toys for the original film of Andy, Sid, and Scud and they certainly weren’t. I understand though that if they’re focusing on making an authentic line of the toy characters in Toy Story then humans wouldn’t fit there. Still, it’s funny hearing that from the same toy company famous for making Barbie (dolls are basically miniature humans after all).

Thanks for bringing the mutant toys to their attention, although I think they were off to a good start with Jingle Joe. The problem with full-sized toys is that there would be a limited appeal in comparison to the price.

And one thing I think everyone would want from a toy company is the Aliens that actually squeak (would be paired up good with Wheezy, and maybe even Shark).

Also, Medicom did human characters as well, and those turned out wonderfully. You can basically mix and match when it comes to scale. Scud would make a good figure for the 6" action figure line.

A chance with Mattel and someone asks them questions that have already been answered?

Where are the questions like:

What lifesized toy replicas are you guys doing, because thats what sells. And expanded on that. Sure the “novelty” stuff like cars and buddy packs are cool, but those things are just “movie time” toys, not the stuff folks care about enough to want to talk to Mattel about it.

Do they openly take questions or how did that work? I would love to get some questions that alot of us are wondering, answered .Emails dont do the trick with them.

They what kind of logic is that? They don’t want to make humans that aren’t to scale? when has any company made a life size human toy? okay, I guess one could count those old life sized Barbie’s they used to make, but even those were on the short side. all they need to do is make a new toy story human line, and just work with the scale independently of the toy characters. then, they could even cash in on that later if they want and make miniature toys just for them.
this would only be practical of the humans were somewhat large though, say 12 inches er so.

Mattel needs to realize that all that kid gimmick crap doesnt sell, its the replica type stuff that sells, or scaled down versions that look kick ass that sell. Most Toy Story buyers are folks who’ve grown up. New buyers want the basics. Everything else is “movie time filler” to make money from merchandising, and it floods the shelves. It’s crap. Kids can play with a 99 cent hotwheels car, or used ones, for cheaper than the $5 or more “toy story” cars.
Sure a “buzz blaster” is fun for a kid for five minutes, before its on to small scale roleplay (aciton figures, vehicles) .

People want Sid’s toys, sid, andy, etc. The mentioned jingle joe sold out QUICK and he was a MINOR character. Its THOSE sort of numbers they should pay attention to, not how well their new “worm shootin buzz in weird buzz mcdonalds play feature quality” 5" toy line is going over at walmart.

If the replica stuff is what sold, thats what would be dominating the shelves. The truth is the gimmicky stuff does sell, kids eat that crap up. I have no idea why but they do. They would rather sell crap that sells than replica stuff for a smaller demographic. And too many moms complain about Sid’s toys, making it more trouble than its worth for Disney to make that stuff (baby face was made a disneystore exclusive because of this), so they fall back on their irrelevant roll play kits and play sets.

Dinoco I agree with you on aliens that actually squeak! I have been wanting one since the first Toy Story. I was so excited when the TSC alien 3 pack came out! Its the most perfect ones I’ve seen so far…but of course they don’t squeek. Is it really that hard?? And a squeeky Wheezy is another one I’ve been waiting and waiting for. Keepin my fingers crossed…
