Thanks for the pointer, ffdude - that was good.
Congratulations to Mr. Giacchino on his Golden Globe, and fingers crossed for the Oscar! Plus, it would be amazing if he were to be doing the soundtrack for Newt- for some reason, I can really imagine his style suiting the film.
Hah, just watched the video clip, thanks. Glad to see he won the Golden Globe… we’re all hoping he brings home the Oscar this time as well.
Michael Giacchino won two of his four Grammy awards earlier today!
Of course, unless he had tied with himself in the Best Score Soundtrack category, he could have only won a maximum of three anyway (he was nominated there for both Up and Star Trek).
So, Up won for Best Score Soundtrack, and he also won for Best Instrumental Composition for Married Life. The one category he was nominated in, that he didn’t take home the prize in, was Best Instumental Arrangement, where he and Tim Simonec were nominated for their arrangement for Up With End Credits.
ALSO, on Friday, Mr. Giacchino was nominated 9 times (in 7 categories) by the IMFCA. See here for details: http://filmmusiccritics.org/

Congratulations to Mr. Giacchino for taking home two Grammy awards!! He certainly deserves them.

I posted this over in the Up forum, but Michael Giacchino won 4 awards from the International Film Music Critics Association: Film Composer of the Year (!), Film Score of the Year for Up, Best Original Score for an Animated Feature for Up, and Best Original Score for a Fantasy/Science Fiction film for Star Trek.
Oscars are Sunday! I will be on the edge of my seat!
Some important news:
There’s a brand new interview with Michael talking about the oscar nomination for Up’s score that was just broadcast on the local classical radio station (KUSC) a couple days ago. You can now download the podcast:
kusc.podbean.com/category/jim-svejda-interviews/
(If reading this a couple of weeks later than when I’m posting this, scroll down to find the Feb 25th 2010 podcast).
Some news that I didn’t want to post on until after it was officially announced has now been mentioned in this interview, so I suppose it’s safe now to post about it: Michael will be scoring Andrew Stanton’s John Carter of Mars. Other than finishing up Lost, he’s been taking some time off… but has said his next movie will be Mars, which I beleive has a tentative release date of 2012.
Great links and news everyone so glad I’m back on these forums again, been missing out big time! I guess I’ve been busy crossing my fingers for MG to win the Oscar this year!
Here’s hoping!
Yes! Finally!
I think his Ratatouille score should already have won two years ago, but at least the Academy didn’t ignore the magnificence of his Up score.
Congratulations, Mr. Giacchino!
Well said, Totoro.
By the way, does anyone know if there are links to view the backstage press conferences for the winners after the Oscars?
Yay, congratulations Mr. Giacchino! It really seems to be ‘his time’ at the moment, so I’m glad he’s being recognised for his talent and dedication to his art.
MIchael Giacchino is my favorite working composer by far. I wish he would’ve been the musical director at this year’s Oscars. Instead they hired Marc Shaiman and were poorer for it. And this is coming from a rather big Shaiman fan.
I actually think he should’ve won the Oscar for Star Trek rather than Up. I love both scores quite a bit, but Trek made a greater impression on me. I mean during the end credits there’s this bit where he pulls off a variation on the theme for TOS and his own main theme in something of a musical duel simultaneously! Simply amazing.
I’ve always loved the soundtrack for The Incredibles but my appreciation has grown ever since I started listening to John Barry’s Bond scores. Hearing the actual inspiration for the cues in the movie really made me think. From the main theme to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service to You Only Live Twice’s Capsule in Space to the 007 theme the influence Barry had on the score is readily apparent. Bird made the right choice in hiring Giacchino after Barry had turned him down.
And is anyone else as blown away by his compositions for Lost? He never brings anything but his A-game, even when working for a television show.
I could gush about this man practically all day. I know that if I were ever able to make a television show or movie he’d be my first choice for scoring duties. He’s one of my go-to artists to listen to while I’m writing. Simply cannot get enough of this man’s work.
My favorite song by Michael would have to be “Married Life” from the Up sound track. The way it mixes with the opening montage of him getting older with his wife made me cry. I hope to hear more from him in future Pixar films!
I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but I think that the music he does for LOST is absolutely INCREDIBLE (no pun intended).
Yes, Michael has done a great job on Lost. We just recorded the final 2.5hr episode of the show yesterday during a very long day, and he really outdid himself. I wrote a post about it (no spoilers) in the off-topic area because it wasn’t Pixar related: LOST's Final Scoring Session Today
EDIT: There’s now a New Yorker Magazine article about Michael and Lost. I put a partial link in the Off-Topic thread (link above) but the entire article requires a subscription.
You can submit questions for a live chat with Michael Giacchino tomorrow! (July 14th)
My thoughts? He’s pure amazing! Very talented, and totally deserved that Oscar!
My favorite Pixar scores from him is “Wall Rat” and “Carl Goes Up”
Yeah, he really deserved that Oscar. I felt like cheering when I saw him win but I’m too quiet, I can’t even cheer very well.
As for my favorite scores:
- Married Life
- Up with End Credits
- End Creditouilles
- Stuff We Did
MG is nominated for an Emmy for his score for the final episode of “Lost.” I’m already convinced he’s going to win! Then all he has to do is write a Broadway score so he can get a Tony, and he’ll have the set! Go, Michael!
He should make Pixar: The Musical!
haha, I just love adding “The Musical” after random words! entertains me.
