Michael Giacchino

Great links and news everyone so glad I’m back on these forums again, been missing out big time! I guess I’ve been busy crossing my fingers for MG to win the Oscar this year!

Here’s hoping!

Yes! Finally!
I think his Ratatouille score should already have won two years ago, but at least the Academy didn’t ignore the magnificence of his Up score.

Congratulations, Mr. Giacchino!

Well said, Totoro.

By the way, does anyone know if there are links to view the backstage press conferences for the winners after the Oscars?

Yay, congratulations Mr. Giacchino! It really seems to be ‘his time’ at the moment, so I’m glad he’s being recognised for his talent and dedication to his art.

MIchael Giacchino is my favorite working composer by far. I wish he would’ve been the musical director at this year’s Oscars. Instead they hired Marc Shaiman and were poorer for it. And this is coming from a rather big Shaiman fan.

I actually think he should’ve won the Oscar for Star Trek rather than Up. I love both scores quite a bit, but Trek made a greater impression on me. I mean during the end credits there’s this bit where he pulls off a variation on the theme for TOS and his own main theme in something of a musical duel simultaneously! Simply amazing.

I’ve always loved the soundtrack for The Incredibles but my appreciation has grown ever since I started listening to John Barry’s Bond scores. Hearing the actual inspiration for the cues in the movie really made me think. From the main theme to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service to You Only Live Twice’s Capsule in Space to the 007 theme the influence Barry had on the score is readily apparent. Bird made the right choice in hiring Giacchino after Barry had turned him down.

And is anyone else as blown away by his compositions for Lost? He never brings anything but his A-game, even when working for a television show.

I could gush about this man practically all day. I know that if I were ever able to make a television show or movie he’d be my first choice for scoring duties. He’s one of my go-to artists to listen to while I’m writing. Simply cannot get enough of this man’s work.

My favorite song by Michael would have to be “Married Life” from the Up sound track. The way it mixes with the opening montage of him getting older with his wife made me cry. I hope to hear more from him in future Pixar films!

I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but I think that the music he does for LOST is absolutely INCREDIBLE (no pun intended).

Yes, Michael has done a great job on Lost. We just recorded the final 2.5hr episode of the show yesterday during a very long day, and he really outdid himself. I wrote a post about it (no spoilers) in the off-topic area because it wasn’t Pixar related: LOST's Final Scoring Session Today

EDIT: There’s now a New Yorker Magazine article about Michael and Lost. I put a partial link in the Off-Topic thread (link above) but the entire article requires a subscription.

You can submit questions for a live chat with Michael Giacchino tomorrow! (July 14th)

My thoughts? He’s pure amazing! Very talented, and totally deserved that Oscar!

My favorite Pixar scores from him is “Wall Rat” and “Carl Goes Up”

Yeah, he really deserved that Oscar. I felt like cheering when I saw him win but I’m too quiet, I can’t even cheer very well.
As for my favorite scores:

  1. Married Life
  2. Up with End Credits
  3. End Creditouilles
  4. Stuff We Did

MG is nominated for an Emmy for his score for the final episode of “Lost.” I’m already convinced he’s going to win! Then all he has to do is write a Broadway score so he can get a Tony, and he’ll have the set! Go, Michael!

He should make Pixar: The Musical!

haha, I just love adding “The Musical” after random words! entertains me.
