I don’t know how good these will be, but I guess fans can find something to like with the continuation of the adventures of their favourite characters! I’m looking forward to the MvA one, maybe it’ll be in the style of Mater and the Ghostlight.
On a side note, in the business section was an article describing that because of poor box office in certain overseas territories, there will be no MvA theatrical sequel.
Katzenberg also said the studio did not plan to produce a sequel to “Monsters vs. Aliens,” which generated $380 million at the box office but did not fare well in some key international markets.
When asked why, he said: “I’d like to tell you there’s a perfectly rational, clear and easy answer as to why not, but there isn’t.”
“There was enough of a consensus from our distribution and marketing folks in certain parts of the world that we’d be pushing a boulder up a hill,” Katzenberg said of the decision not to pursue a sequel.
I saw it the night it came out, and let me tell you. It was just plain stupid! it was predictable, and seemed like when it was the right moment for it to end, it kept going. Sorry, but I hated it. Merry Madagascar looks good though.
I just caught the Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space special and I must say, I enjoyed it a lot. I suppose it was not meant to be brain candy or anything, but it was an entertaining short. I liked how they incorporated various aspects of Halloween like the titular pumpkin mutants, and [spoil]how they were defeated by eating too much candy.[/spoil]
There was also a nice bit where the three guy monsters see their costumed selves in the form of trick-and-treaters. There were also quite a number of mini-character-plots in what is essentially a half-hour show, like Link’s feelings of ‘scare inadequacies’, or Dr Cockroach’s haunted memories of a Halloween gone sour. And of course, Blob and his single-minded pursuits, this time of gorging on as much sugary treats as possible.
Animation’s okay, I like the glowing neon lights and spooky atmosphere, although the location was pretty limited (pretty much a single avenue of Modesto). Some funny lines (“Say hello to my little friend! Come get some!”) and trademark zany Dreamworks slapsticks.
I agree with TAMATER that the end was a bit drawn-out (what I call the “It’s Not Over Yet?” syndrome suffered by movies like Casino Royale). Seriously, the ‘twist’ ending occured twice for Chrysler sakes!
I don’t know whether a preview for Merry Madagascar is out now, but I hope it’s as good, if not better. From the Halloween special, I actually wouldn’t mind a Monsters vs Aliens sequel or a TV show, to be honest. They seem to be growing on me, kind of like an animated version of Hellboy or something (right down to the ‘Supernatural Law Enforcement Team of Misfits’ element). I find them a heck of a lot more charming than the folks from Madagascar or Shrek…
