With the trailer for Monsters Vs. Aliens having been released, early reaction to the film from members is that DreamWorks Animation has, after Kung Fu Panda, sunk right back to their usual low. Now, I’m not by any means excited, or looking forward to this film, but a recent video I found on ReelzChannel.com has me wondering if DreamWorks does actually have another quality film on their hands.
I am actually looking forward to Monsters Vs. Aliens. I really liked Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and while DreamWorks isn’t Pixar, I still enjoy and look forward to the films that they come out with.
I think it will be entertaining, but not up to the same standard as Pixar. I expect more comedic films from DreamWorks, which are always fun to see, but Pixar has the good, solid storylines. I’m not super excited about Monsters Vs. Aliens, but I’ll probably see it at some point.
This is the trailer that leaked some time this year or last year, wasn’t it?
Seems a bit like Monsters, Inc., though… but it’s not like the subject of monsters was Pixar’s invention so I’m not too bothered by that. Doesn’t seem as if DW are trying anything drastically new in the way of storytelling, and the trailer wasn’t that funny to me, but I’m sure it will be entertaining to some people, and on a visual level at least, DW seems to be improving.
Good to see the comments read out had references to Pixar as the benchmark for Monsters Vs. Aliens to surpass. And is it just me, or does there always seem to be a lot of hype over DW’s next film, but they never seem to deliver critically…? Anyway, I’ll wait and see what the critical reception is before seeing this. I’m still not convinced that DW can release a good film (even Kung Fu Panda let me down a bit after hearing how it was so great and much of an improvement.) But we’ll have to wait and see.
I’m sure this movie will be great for all of those little children who like fart jokes or silly one liners. And what’s with the storyline? Aliens invade so humans make monsters to stop them? Uh huh…
Yes, I’m being critical, but the quality of the trailer dictates if DreamWorks are going to get my £7.00, and this instance, I don’t think they are. Not that they ever have, aside from the case of the original Shrek.
I’m planning on seeing this one. I think that it should be pretty good - besides, I learn more from the movies that could have been made better in some ways. If you want to be a filmmaker, it’s good to be able to watch a movie and say… ‘if they had changed this scene to this, removed that scene entirely, and done that last scene differently, this would have been a way better movie.’ (Pixar is the gold standard, because if all movies were super, then none of them would be. )
Essentially, some movies are better than others, and it let’s you really appreciate them for their artistic advances. Some you don’t enjoy, and others you just enjoy for what they are. I have no bias against any movie company at this point, and I will watch their movies before judging.
I haven’t seen the trailer yet, but I have this shopping bag with a poster-pic on one side that I bring to-and-fro to school with my textbook and … well, I have trouble telling which ones are monsters and which ones are aliens. They can be either or!
I’m interested to see it, so I’ll probably shell out. But the whole design looks like they’ve mashed a load of different animation styles together; each character looks like it belongs in a different CGI film to me! Maybe thats the intention. I like the design of the scientist guy though. Was a bit “?!” about Susan.
DreamWorks seem to be on par with Pixar for the most part when it comes to some beautiful animation nowadays, so am more anxious about a good story. Kung Fu Panda definitely restored my faith in them!
When I first heard the story line of Monsters Vs. Aliens, I thought it was almost copying The Incredibles. But, when the trailer came out, I thought it looked like one of the funnier DW movies. Then again, I thought that Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa would be the funniest DW movie. I still liked it, but all the funny parts were in the trailer.
Well, if anyone here’s interested, they’ve released the first featurette (something which I’ve first seen with Cars, but is now being increasingly adopted by other studios lately).
I’m only excited to see Insectosaurus (because he looks so endearingly daft and yet so deadly), and the amazing Hugh Laurie as Doctor Cockroach, Ph.D. (is this supposed to be an inside joke to House M.D.? Ha-ha-ha…real subtle, DreamWorks ). It’s proving intriguing, but I’m not quite Cruise-jumping-on-the-couch-excited yet.
I’m with lizardgirl about this. Anyway, I think I’m still gonna watch it. Maybe, just for fun.
(or, maybe, just to compare how bad it is when you compare it with Pixar’s Up! )
Though I used to love some DreamWorks’ films for their cool/weird comedy, I think now I’ve lost faith in them since they keep making brainless sequels to their brainless films just to get more money. Shrek Goes Fourth? Kung Fu Panda 2?!
What up next? Monsters Vs. Aliens 2,3,4,5,6…!!! (I can imagine that happening)
I don’t even think I’d want to watch this movie in a cinema, so I’ll probably “obtain” it by different means. As much as I don’t like DreamWorks, I still like to know what they are up to and if they will ever improve. But why does Seth Rogen seem to be in so many animated films?
Shrek the Third
Horton Hears a Who!
Kung Fu Panda
Monsters Vs. Aliens
Fair enough if he was an actual voice actor, or his voice had more range, but it sounds very monotonic and dreary to me. I don’t understand the appeal aside from him being so hot right now, but I guess big names are all that matters to DreamWorks, am I right?
Yeah, it seems like he’s the voice actor du jour nowadays, just like Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy used to be. DreamWorks also used Chris Rock trice and Renee Zellweger twice (Madagascar 1 & 2 and Bee Movie, and Shark Tale and Bee Movie respectively). I have yet to see a DreamWorks movie which does not have a headline of an all-star cast. Pixar on the other hand, with the exception of Cars, does not have a single actor’s name listed on their film posters.
As one commentor astutely remarked, DreamWorks has just released a “preview for a preview”. For this year’s prized Superbowl spot, DreamWorks is giving away “Intel In-Tru 3-D glasses” to see their new trailer in 3-D. Horray, let’s commend them for the slick marketing tactic.
As for the Sobe Life Water lizards commercial… “WHAT THE FLAGNOD!”
Although, you’ve got to admit, it’s pretty fun to hear Kiefer “Jack Bauer” Sutherland yell as his General Buck Turgidson-inspired character, General W.R. Monger:
I think it looks kinda silly…it really looks like a cartoon that would air on Cartoon Network. It just looks so weird.
Not my type of film…I did hear that their commercial is going to be in 3D…the glasses the public can use are to be sold on soda throughout the week. It will be 3D-able.
