Movies - both new and old

Fred: The Movie: F

I had no expectations for this movie. None! And Nickelodeon, you disappointed me again. :frowning:

q_o_p: Is the Lasseter-san movie on YouTube?

Virginia: The only (and the only) reason that Fred appeals to me is that he’s from Nebraska. Besides that, he doesn’t really matter to me.

Oh, goodness, IV…I had the misfortune of catching some of it when channel switching at our hotel in Vegas (big deal for us as we don’t have cable).

Somehow, this made me laugh.

Black Swan: I hate to join the majority after the majority has already been established, but Natalie Portman’s performance in this is definitely going to win the Oscar. I very much enjoyed this movie, it has everything I like. Surreal imagery, psychological horror, outstanding performances, smart twists, a great score, and a bittersweet ending (see Pan’s Labrynth or Grave of Fireflies for what I’m talking about). Without spoiling anything, I was a little disappointed by the transformation scenes, as I expected more. Granted if there was more I’d probably get nightmares, but if it was done effectively I wouldn’t mind them. I also thought it should’ve been longer, but a lot of images in this film will be in my head for months, so bravo to the cast and crew on that mark. I’d also like to mention the score, which takes the classic pieces of Swan Lake, modernizes them, and has a creepy hum to it, ala The Dark Knight. The film also has a wierd running theme of feet, but it doesn’t really bother me. If you don’t see this movie, (it’s certainly not for everyone), at least watch the trailer. It is by far my favorite trailer for this year and perfectly summarizes the tone of the film. Expect several Oscar nominations for Black Swan this February, including a Best Picture nom and a Best Actress Win. I give it four and a half feet out of five. ****1/2

To quote Nostalgia Critic, “A chicken! She’s turning into a chicken!”

No, I don’t believe it’s streaming on any public sites.

WALL-E (for the 5th time): B+ <img src=“{SMILIES_PATH}/love2.gif” alt=“:loves:” title="In

Love" /> Aww, I love this movie. WALL-E and Eve are the best pairing I’ve seen in a Pixar movie.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: C- I missed the beginning of the movie, but man, this movie is bad. Some scenes made no sense.

Shutter Island (B) – Sort of what I expected, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s a good popcorn thriller with a talented cast and interesting setting and atmosphere.
Tampopo (A) – Fantastic film! I tried describing it to my boyfriend and failed miserably. It’s something that has to be seen to truly appreciate what it is; trailers and written summaries won’t do it any justice. And why is it that food movies are so awesome? Ratatouille, Eat Drink Man Woman… I actually kind of liked Julie & Julia. Mostly Martha and Chocolat weren’t bad, either.
Big (N/A) – Strange to think how this is a feel-good movie, but a huge part of the story is only skimmed over: Billy went missing and presumably kidnapped for quite some time! His family was in serious pain; there should have been a major investigation going on, like newsworthy investigation. If that was worked more into the film, the tone would have been so much darker and more serious. Just think about it. Also, the reason I say that the grade is N/A is because I’m too biased. I’ve liked this movie since I was a kid and I’ve seen it far too many times. It’s not the best movie, but I don’t want to slap a grade on it that would suggest it’s not worth watching at all. It’s still great!

I didn’t know where else to put this as it didn’t seem to warrant its own thread.

So, I’ll just leave this here.

Star Wars coming to Blu-ray in September

Fred’s videos are so funny! I don’t see why his movie was so cheesy and pointless.

Downfall: A+ Probably the best foreign live-action film I’ve ever seen. Very accurate Hitler portrayal.

I Am Sam: A+ Great. I really connected to Sam.

Megamind: Somewhere between B and B+
A lot better than I expected. One of DreamWorks’s better movies. It never feels rude or mean-spirited, just funny and energetic. The pacing in the first third or so feels a bit too quick, though.

White Fang: I watched the 1991 Disney version. Some parts are adorable, and I love the Alaskan setting and the relationship between Jack and the wolfdog White Fang.

Some parts really upset me, though. I just got really sad!

But the ending made up for all of that!

I give it a B.

I agree. It’s one of the better DreamWorks films to come out, although I’m not necessarily drawn to the subject matter/plot. The animation is a vast improvement to some of their previous CGI work because of how elastic the facial expressions have become. I mean, there were a lot of little scenes when I was wowed by the creative animation and I completely was not expecting that from a DW comedy.

Hey, guys, I’m considering watching Pink Floyd The Wall, but I’m told it’s very…graphic and disturbing. :stuck_out_tongue: I can probably bare most of it, but I get squeamish around excessive explicit or gorey imagery, and I was wondering if anyone else here has seen it. Because I have a deep interest in the movie for the more psychological/symbolic aspect of the story, and I just recently got into Pink Floyd’s music.

My Best Friend’s Birthday: B+ This film is Quentin Tarantino’s directorial debut, It was originally 70 minutes long but 34 minutes were lost when a fire broke out during editing. All that survives are 36 minutes of proto-Tarantino. You’ll see a lot of elements that were used again in his later films such as his own gratuitous cameo apperances, K-BILLY, his foot fetish, the Beatles/Elvis debate, pop culture dissection conversations and references to actors like Aldo Ray.

All in all, it was a good watch. If you’re interested in the early work of someone’s who arguably one of the most influential filmmakers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, check out this film.

Con Air: A+ I really liked this movie. I really liked the way it was very actiony, but still had a point…sort of. Either way, I enjoyed it greatly.

Black Swan - I watched this today. If I could sum it up in one word? Creepy! It was a really good movie, but it was creepy and disturbing. I was a bit reluctant to go see it, but I’m glad I did. I had a great time. But, man, I can’t get over how creepy it was!

I give it a B.

Yay!

The Fighter - A+

Wow. As someone who isn’t a fan of boxing, I’m shocked by how much I enjoyed this film. It’s masterfully staged, paced, and acted, and none of the drama feels phony or cliched in spite of the movie’s formula.

This is now my second-favorite movie of 2010.

Black Swan - A-

This is one seriously ----ed up film. Nina’s hallucinations are portrayed in an almost unbearably visceral and intimate fashion, and Natalie Portman’s performance makes it all the more believable. The pace never lets up throughout and Vincent Cassel does a great job in his supporting mentor/comic relief role, and the ending is epic and satisfying.

Unfortunately, I can’t give this an A/A+ grade because it did pile on quite a few cheap jump scares towards the climax. I think Aronofsky wanted to see how much of a horror movie he could fit into Oscar bait and still get away with.
