I like the 2012 version, but the one from 98 is quite good too. Their Javert was the best.
That makes sense, since Geoffrey Rush is amazing all the time. I don’t know how I feel about Russel Crowe.
I’d love to see both of those movies IV, plus the newer Lés Miserables. Actually, there’s entirely too many movies I need to get to watching right now. I’d like to see Harold and Maude.
Harold and Maude is a very good film… that I can’t get to like.
It’s hilarious, I can’t deny it. But it’s also disturbing.
Rango: A marvelous animated feature. Depp is quite delightful in the lead as his quirkiness really fits with the role. Ned Beatty once again proves to be a terrific tyrant as the baddie. I loved the little in-jokes that were probably aimed more towards the adults. From the fear and loathing cameo to [spoil]Clint Eastwood as the Spirit of the West out with his metal detector in an epic search for the Academy Awards.[/spoil] A fun and entertaining romp from start to finish, respectful to the Western genre (loved the Leone inspired score), filled with great references, and a creative premise. Highly recommended! A-
Disturbing?
How so? I haven’t seen it. There are sooooo many movies I want to seee…
Well, I’m not sure that telling you constitutes an spoiler, as it’s the core of the film, but wait until you see it.
I also find the two characters kind of repulsive. Not as much because of their pairing, but on their own.
I guess I can see what you mean, but if you’re implying what I think you’re implying, then I’m not really put off by it.
From what I do know it seems very much like a love it or hate it kind of film, and I’m ok with that. I more or less want to see it because it seems kind of shocking and different (and several of my friends with similar tastes seem to like it).
Yes, this is exactly what I think, and I think you’ve seen way more than I have, too. Well, my chances will be much higher once I’m done with school.
I could go on and on and on about how much I like Rango. But I’ll spare you guys. ![]()
I’m just a big fan of Clint Eastwood and spaghetti westerns, and I felt that this film was a nice homage to that whole genre.
Clint Eastwood is in this? Oh, man. Okay, no more holding off! I’m just finally gonna sit down and watch it tomorrow like you’ve been telling me for the past few months! ![]()
Leirin, it sounds to me like you and I have both not seen a couple of the same films but would like to. That’s cool! ![]()
Thanks for clearing that up. Still doesn’t make me want to see it any less.
Just to clarify, he’s not voiced by Clint Eastwood, but Timothy Oliphant.
Oh. Okay. Well, still cool. I’v been meaning to see it for a long time but didn’t come around to it yet. Thanks!
Recently saw two Dreamworks movies I’d been meaning to get around to. Enjoyed them both!
Megamind: Very solid as a comedy and has a pretty decent emotional grounding to it too. Megamind is a likeable character and the jokes are pretty solid—at least for me, there aren’t any cringeworthy moments. Some slightly squandered potential here and there, but I was pleasantly surprised with some of the direction it took. I’d give it a B. ![]()
Rise of the Guardians: Excellent movie! Some slightly weird pacing (a little too zippy during some scenes), but overall, thoroughly enjoyable and I really appreciated the sort of innocence to it that seems sorely lacking in a lot of mainstream movies these days. It was very sincere not to mention gorgeously rendered. A-
^I like both of those films.
Rise of the Guardians was a fun movie. And it makes me sad that it lost so much money. It wasn’t the best movie, but it wasn’t “we need to lay off 350 employees” bad. (which ended up happening)
I like Megamind! And I haven’t seen RotG. But when I read about the lay offs, it was really depressing. From what I hear, it’s really good too. I think it’s terrible that they would have to fire so many for one flopped movie.
EDIT: I don’t want to double post. So I’ll add this in!! I saw Les Miserables(2012) tonight. I love it. I do like it better than '98. I’ll admit I cried a few times. I’m still misty-eyed. The ending <3 Most of the singing is okay, but I guessed that, the cast is so Hollywood. ![]()
I have a question. Although I love Pixar (obviously being a member here and all), is it bad that in the last year I’ve started to explore more “mature” flicks? I’m of course talking about movies that are more my age range (e.g movies rated R/15/18). Don’t get me wrong, I’m not “moving on” from Pixar as I still love those guys but I haven’t watched their stuff for a while because I’m too busy exploring other stuff and expanding my taste in movies. Mainly cult classics and action, horror and sci-fi flicks, along with some crime thrillers.
If you’re curious, you can find a list of almost every movie I can remember seeing on my Letterboxd account here. I love this site, such a great way of tracking what movies you’ve been watching.
It’s not bad, of course. I’m not exclusively a Pixar fan myself. I’m here because things conspired, but a general film discussion board would be much proper to me. What I love is cinema. Pixar just happens to make great cinema, so I love it for it.
If anything, I would advice you against using the term “mature” as a difference between Pixar and the films you’re watching now, specially because you’re staying in a relatively limited terrain so far. You should expand your scope beyond just those genres you mentioned, or else you’ll miss some magnificent products.
In fact, I find the notion of “genre” as too restricting (though absolutely necessary).
It’s always good to explore different types of film. Watch as many as you can!
