Geoff: Well, I sat through Avatar, and I was riveted throughout. And I made the mistake of drinking a bottle of Heineken at the Skyfall premiere, so I had to excuse myself after Bond sees the news on TV and I returned when he was being driven to the underground base (so I missed his reunion with M in her apartment).
Yeah, I plan to watch Scarface. Grindhouse was fantastic, I watched it with my movie society as a double bill and somehow I lasted through it. But I had to take a leak halfway through Les Miserables (when Valjean and little Cosette are playing “hide-and-seek” with Valjean).
SoA: Well, hey, it’s a subjective thing, man. Maybe I just have incontinence.
Great taste my friend! Pinocchio is my favorite Disney film (recently usurping the previous favorite, The Lion King) and Dumbo is my second.
I actually think that Snow White is overrated. DON’T GET ME WRONG. It is a brilliantly done film, detailed and beautiful. But it’s constantly ranked as the “greatest animated film”. While it was groundbreaking, and it’s importance to film can’t be denied, I think there are other films more deserving of the title “Best Animated Film”
I highly recommend Scarface. It is in my opinion, one of Pacino’s best. I really enjoyed Grindhouse as well but I feel Death Proof should have been shown first as it was less exciting compared to Planet Terror imo. They’re both great films but sitting through the dialogue scenes of Death Proof seems like a chore compared to the non-stop action of Planet Terror.
I like Scarface. I agree, Spirit, that 2.5 isn’t long, in that I love movies that long. Actually I kind of get annoyed with movies that are less than 2 hours, even though most animated movies seem to be much shorter than 2. However, I agree with TDIT that I can never drink soda to see a 2-2.5 movie in theaters. I had to leave during Cars 2 and HtTYD, neither of which are even very long!
Thanks! Interesting to hear your new top 2 Disney films. Hey, that’s alright! Opinions can change over time, and The Lion King is still a great film today. Pinocchio and Dumbo are not far behind my top Disney films!
I don’t disagree with you about Snow White. It sort of gets a high spot on my list out of respect, and it holds a place of honor in my heart as I played Grumpy in a school play once. Yep, that’s right. But I can understand it’s overrated in a couple of ways. Actually though, what you said about Snow White word for word is EXACTLY what I think about The Lion King. I like it and I think it’s a really good movie, but it seemed to be #1 on almost every list I’ve seen. Same with Beauty and the Beast and Fantasia (also great films). But I enjoy all of those. My top two are The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Wreck-It Ralph, in no particular order. Yeah, Ralph’s only been out for 5 months, but I could just feel I would love it. It gives me that good Toy Story vibe. That’s my favorite of Disney’s CG films, but Pooh is my favorite of the hand-drawn ones. Though some of the others are stronger, I love the cleverness and sweetness and fun in both of those films. Others I love are Aladdin, Tarzan, The Emperor’s New Groove, Lilo and Stitch, and all of the John Lasseter-executively-produced films.
Good, I’m glad you understand! That’s worded well, it certainly does hold a place of honor. And The Lion King being overrated is one reason It got pushed down on my list. After reviewing some other films, and reading some reviews, I’ve kind of discovered that. Beauty and the Beast, is a great example as well. Great movie, but it’s overrated. Talk about plot holes.
Man, you have good taste! Three of those last four you mentioned are on my top 10 list.
I kind of cut Beauty slack for a few reasons(other than my bias). After the directorial change, they only had two years to redo the whole movie. And it’s usually dismissed as just another kids movie by most adults I know, so I don’t even see it as that popular. And the kids at my school, like Little Mermaid and Lion King. So I never really hear anything about it except online. I think the soundtrack is on such a level that I can compare few other musicals to it. I’m not going to talk about Belle being the easiest princess to relate to, because that’s like the most stereotypical Disney Confession ever. But I really feel like the Beast is often ignored. It’s really his story, but people usually only talk about belle! He is the one who learns a lesson, he is the one who struggles, and while Belle has some troubles, it really is about him. It starts with him! I find that it is one of the few popular Disney movies that get just as much hate. People say it endorses Stockholm Syndrome, Bestiality(Really?), and is superficial(again, really??!) And one common complaint, is that the beast as a human is ugly. Yes, that’s what people get out of the movie. I don’t understand people.(TLK I think is over rated, just because it’s everybody’s favorite. OMG how many times have I heard “You like cartoons? My favorite is Lion King.” And I disagree with the popularity of the sound track as well. I love the score, and a couple of the songs. But the other songs…ugh. Besides Hercules(1 or 2 good songs), this might be my least favorite Disney renaissance sound track. Really I’ll just stop, because on the issue of these two movies, oddly enough, Nostalgia Critic said everything exactly right.
I don’t think Beauty and the Beast is as overrated as The Lion King. I actually prefer Beauty and the Beast quite a bit. There’s nothing really wrong with it that I can think of. It’s kind of like Up where it can be overrated but it’s actually rather deserving of it’s praise. Just other films don’t get that recognition sometimes, unfortunately. But it certainly does deserve the title of best Disney film from any fan who loves it as their favorite.
Beast is kind of overlooked. I think he’s my favorite character from that film! Even though he’s really mean at the beginning, I laugh at most of what he has to say just because of how he screams. His temper tantrums make him seem like a little kid, and there were times I thought were funny when I actually probably should have been scared. That might take the seriousness of it out for me, but it doesn’t throw me off from how well it was made.
I didn’t know it was made in just 2 years! An even more impressive feat. I actually have not seen any bonus features for this film, I think I’d like to. And yes, I gotta hand it to Nostalgia Critic. He did get this one right, that’s for sure.
OMG listen to the DVD commentary. I loved the commentary. It explained a lot of things. And yes, the original directors were taking the movie in an odd direction. So Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale replaced them. I agree, some of his yelling is funny. Mostly, for me, when Belle doesn’t want to come down to dinner. Overall, all of the renaissance films(except Rescuers Down Under) overshadow all the older movies, and so far, all the newer ones. I often boggle at how such amazing films can be ignored, and in some cases, hated by the general public. However, given what it had against it in the beginning, and all the amazing things about it, I can’t see Beauty as undeserving of whatever praise it actually gains outside of people I know personally. I know some people love to pick at mistakes made by some animators who are not a leading animator on a character. But, I’m just amazed that they do it so well that most people would never notice. And Ariel is actually a better example of this than Belle. Belle has a fairly distinct, clean look through the film. But that doesn’t really bother me anyway, I like the music and the story. I’m mostly just amazed by the animation.
I watched My Own Private Idaho in film appreciation last night.
I appreciated the films use of motifs. The fish, the barns, clouds. Good use of them. But I don’t know, that movie was just so unsettling for me. I’m not sure how to feel about it.
I will say that River Pheonix was an uncanny look alike to James Dean, in this movie more than his other ones. Ironic, considering they both died so young during their great popularity.
Reminds me of Ratatouille, Brave, and the “2” movies from Pixar! No wonder it’s good, it’s like another one of those films! Makes sense. I only have original and extended versions on VHS. Perhaps I’ll try to ask for the Blu-Ray for Christmas, it does interest me.
LOL! That’s exactly the scene I was talking about! I also like when they’re getting to know each other and Belle playfully hits him with a snowball, only on his face. But he - he grabs a big ol’ thing of snow bigger than her and launches it at her! I got some laughs from Gaston, too. Even though he’s a jerk, I always crack up at his singing, which is actually quite good but also completely phony! And when he and Lefew can’t stop laughing, and the whole Gaston song.
Been watching the Dirty Harry series this week. Brilliant cop series I have to say. Clint Eastwood is a legend, and still manages to be badass no matter how old he gets. Sudden Impact is probably the darkest, most disturbing, and my favourite of the series.
I’m doing an auteur project on Mel Brooks for my Film Appreciation Class.
The 3 Films I choose to analyze are Blazing Saddles, Dracula:Dead and Loving It, and Robin Hood: Men In Tights.
We’re not suppose to watch films that we’ve seen before (Which is why I didn’t choose the Producers, Spaceballs, or History of the World) I have seen Blazing Saddles, but that was a while ago.
Just rewatched the Hobbit. I like it. Not love, not hate. It’s just good. Definitely some things that are a little odd, but I still like it well enough.
Gaston is hilarious! No matter how conceited he is, I can’t help liking him a little bit.
Oh, yeah. The Hobbit was nice. I think I like the beginning and the midway/ending points most. When everyone’s eating, talking together. That’s when I saw the most character. I did think it was kinda long at the end, maybe a little too much fighting and action, but I didn’t really mind that much.
Come one, the graphics weren’t mediocre. I also didn’t think they should have made all orcs CGI, and they weren’t the best I’ve seen, but they’re reasonably well done, and ground breaking in an aspect or two.
