Movies - both new and old

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: (at long last, I finally got to see it in theatres) - A+

Also, I rewatched/bought How to Train Your Dragon: A

I bought Dragon today, too! It’s awesome. I second that A.

Today, I watched Men in Black & Men in Black II with my friends. I loved both movies, Will Smith is amazing! <3

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: A-
A million times better than Temple of Doom. Kept the qualities of Raiders, but with a better emotional arc and more comedy. I’d say it’s about equal to Raiders.

The Social Network: A
Second best movie I’ve seen this year. Some of the tightest writing I’ve seen in a movie in the past decade, great acting and directing, and the score was pitch perfect. I liked that Zuckerberg was a relatively stagnant character until the end, not making his development too cheesy but at the same time not rushed, and I honestly sympathized with him more than others seemed to; he was just doing what he felt was right, in his own corrupted mind. The only problem was that I felt that the ending was a tiny bit abrupt, but it’s so minor that it didn’t affect my overall opinion of the film much at all. Incredible film, almost certain to be nominated for Best Picture and possibly win, unless maybe 127 Hours is that good.

The Karate Kid (2010): A-
Princess Mononoke: A+

Edited by Bill: Please do not use excessive material

I still have not seen the newer Karate Kid. How would you say it compares?

Leirin: To the original? Well, the biggest difference is that it takes place in China and that the main character is taught kung-fu and not karate. I give the original an A+ and I think it’s some kind of masterpiece. The new one is pretty good, but doesn’t live up.

The Iron Giant (again): A+

This one always makes me cry… :sunglasses:

Superbad: B+ (Definitely in my Top 5 Funniest Movies list, if only for McLovin)
Ramona and Beezus: C+
Nosferatu: A+
Night of the Living Dead: A

Toss up between this and Up for my favorite movie ever.

Father of the Bride (both parts): 6/10 - Rather cliché-heavy comedies which are still fun to watch occasionally.

And I got How to Train Your Dragon on Blu-ray. It looks absolutely gorgeous!
They could have been a bit more generous with the bonus features, though.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail: A-

Easily one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. The last 60 seconds, however, were so lame that it wasn’t even funny. Well, it was funny, but disappointing.

That, my friend, is the funniest movie, EVER! I could quote that movie for hours, and I agree with your rating.

Heh, I watched Holy Grail about a month ago, and I can still remember the “Your mother was a hamster” line from the foul-mouthed Frenchman.

Though I have to agree the ending sucked. It was a cop-out, much like Blazing Saddles (another great spoof movie, of Westerns). But everything before it was sheer brilliance.

I’m watching Antz now on FTA. I disliked it as a kid, I’m still not digging it now. It is amazingly adult for a kid’s film (the swearing, adult themes, and violence) but there are a few good moments (like the death of Barbatus and the sneaker-gum sequence). As a commentary on class-based societies, human consumerism (there are a lot of product placements!) and the psychology of war, it’s pretty good.

The soundtrack by John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams is the film’s strongest suit, a nice mix of rousing orchestral with covers of contemporary pop music. Overall, it has great music and more intelligent themes than A Bug’s Life (individualism vs collectivism, compared to ABL’s ‘misfit saves the world’ moral), but the ugly character designs, kid-unfriendly content, and lackluster production values sort of bring it down a notch.

I like that movie, too, but I can’t recall the ending

thedriveintheatre: Excuse my Americaness, but what is FTA? A channel of some sort?

Holy Grail ended with the revelation that [spoil]it was all just a movie on a studio set[/spoil]. They didn’t even [spoil]finish the battle[/spoil].

And FTA is an acronym for Free-To-Air. Free channels like ABC, NBC, CBS, which are not on paid cable.

Ah, yes, I remember now. Yeah, not the greatest of endings.

Ugh, Antz was very boring for me. Didn’t stay with me very well.

Bryko: Yay! I’m ultra obsessed with it. Funny, since I only saw it because it had Brad Bird’s name on the IMDB page.

Piranha 3D: Oh my, just…wow! I’m speechless - B+

In a good way?
