Mutant Toys question

I know it’s been established that the mutant toys were misjudged, but some things raise questions. First of all, why do they try to scare Woody when he’s exploring Sid’s room, and second, why do they try to block off their escape from Sid’s room in the karate-chop scene. I know that these scenes are meant to lead the viewer to believe that Buzz’s assumptions of them being monsters are right, but looking back at it, they seem out of place.

First they werent trying to scare them and second in the karate trap action scene they were warning them abut scud.

Your second explanation sounds about right, but they were clearly trying to scare Woody, first by Babyface sizing him up and then when Jingle Joe shut off the flashlight.

I don’t think so. Babyface was just looking at Woody, and is simply incapable of the proper facial expressions. Jingle Joe probably just shut off the flashlight because it was annoying him. After all, they’re used to the darkness, so having a bright light shone around is probably irritating.

I agree with what the others have said- the mutant toys are supposed to appear menacing upon first viewing, but if you then watch the scene again, you realise that actually they weren’t being threatening at all. For example, with Jingle Joe switching off the torch, I’d always assumed that he’d done so almost as if he were confused with Woody’s usage of it, and so switched it off to save batteries.

As nintendofreakgcn said, Babyface, as well as the other mutant toys, are for some reason unable to express their emotions in the same way that Andy’s toys can- they can’t speak or change their facial expressions. There’s no real explanation for this (perhaps they have been so traumatized by Sid’s abuse of them) but it does mean that they can come across as being very threatening, when this is not their intention.

More likely the fact they’re broken up is the cause of their lack of facial expressions.

Interestingly enough Big Baby in TS3 doesn’t look like he has any proper expressions either in all the stills I’ve seen.

And it has a broken eye… Hmmm… Time to go to the Toy Story references thread! Anyways, I’m not sure why he can’t move his face at all. Guess we’ll have to wait for the movie.

And looking back at it, the fact that the mutant toys were trying to warn Buzz and Woody is most-likely the case because Buzz makes a remark about not knowing what’s out there.

OMG

I have just realised:

One of the mutant toys is an insect wrestler right? I think Twitch is a reference to him, down to the face.

Oh yeah, Rockmobile (at least I think that’s what you’re talking about). I gotta get a comparission pic. In Twitch’s description, it said he was one in a series of Insectoids, so Sid probably got his hands on one.

Sorry for the thread revival, but I did notice something interesting. Pixar definately did include a lot of body language that you could only pick up on a second viewing. In the background of the scene before the karate chop scene, Jingle Joe is scouting outside the door in the background, confirming what WoodBuzz101 said. There’s still no clear explanation for why they acted so strangely originally, but I guess that just goes to show that they can’t communicate properly.

They acted scary to built tension. Scare Woody and Buzz, and the audience.

Yes, but I was looking for a plausible in-story explanation.
