My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

I was expecting him the entire time! :frowning:

Anyway, great episode! And I completely agree, I’ve been digging how the recent episodes have given a lot of the main cast even more development. Makes me even more excited for the season finale. (Although, I will be sad when Ponies must go away again for the summer. :frowning: )

If I may ask, who’s Doctor Whooves? I’m not familiar with these fan-named characters.

Doctor Whooves is a random background stallion who got his name because of his cutie mark… and the fact that his hair looks a lot like David Tennants!

He was originally paired with Rose (for obvious reasons) early on in the fandom, then Colgate, because they share the same cutie mark, but now he and Derpy are drawn together a lot. It must have something to do with the Whooves/Hooves parts of their last names.

If anyone’s been following the merchandise recently, you might have noticed some new blindbag toys are ready to be released! Among a bunch of random recoloured ponies, we’re getting a Trixie (whose last name is apparently Lulamoon), a PROPER Lyra (now called Lyra Heartstrings!) and the three alicorn characters - Celestia, Luna and Cadence!

I’m extremely excited for these, even though I only have the main 6 in blindbag form.

Wow, those are uber cool!!

Guess who’s new to the MLP fandom?
It’s a long story as to how it took me so long to watch it, but I finally saw the first two episodes of season 1 on Friday. How did I get into it? Well, on the DisneyCreate art community, last year, I had a request to draw Rarity, and I had no idea who that character was! So I went to the site to find reference, and I started to find myself strangely intrigued by these adorable little equines. And since then, the MLP craze has spread like wildfire through Create and I have found myself unable to resist drawing them. Man, last year, I doodled so many pony-fied Cars characters that I can’t remember how many I did. The reason why I’d never watched the show before is due to my cable lineup not having Hub (one of these days, I’m getting satellite!), so I watched the season 1 opener online and found myself unexpectedly getting really into it! I love the style, the characters, the wry humor, and the mystical background! I guess I have a lot of catching up to do, huh?

I love how the Princess Luna toy looks absolutely nothing like her.

I know, I wish they would make a really good Princess Luna toy. But honestly, she better have an episode in Season three. She’s the best Princess!

My issue with the Luna toy is that Hasbro is using the same body mold that post of the other ponies have, which is shorter and younger looking. Luna is supposed to be taller and thinner, so it makes her like weird. They’re using a new mold for the Cadance mini-figure that looks PERFECT for Luna, and rumor has it they’ll make a more accurate toy using the taller mold. I hope so.

Great to hear!

I started watching it this past spring because I was curious as to what the hype was about. Its pretty good. I’m entertained by it. I’m by no means obsessed with it, but I like it. I like all the ponies except for Applejack. I dunno why, but I guess she just seems REALLY cliche to me. And I cant say I’m into the episodes that focus on the “cutie mark crusaders”, because they kept using that basic storyline for those 3. I realized I’m the most like Twilight. She and Rarity and Fluttershy are prob my favorites

First off, lennonluvr9, allow me to say: “Welcome to the herd!” I’ve always wanted to say that.

I suppose Applejack might seem the most stereotypical character (Western cowgirl with Southern accent). A lot of fans also weren’t impressed with the two episodes last season that focused on her (as in both episodes, her friends had to bail her out in the end instead of her helping herself).

Having said that, though, she’s sort of a ‘dark horse’ (pardon the pun) in my books, because although she might seem the most ‘boring’ and ‘flat’ character to me, she holds a lot of story potential when you look beyond the surface. A forthright and stubborn personality has a great deal of conflict potential, and I hope the writers exploit that more in future seasons!

I’m probably a mix of Twilight (bookworm), Fluttershy (likes animals) and Derpy (clumsy and forgetful). Fluttershy, Derpy and (despite her brief appearance) Daring Do are my favourites.

Check out my PSP wallpaper!

You can see more pictures in the respective Gadgets and Gizmos thread.

I find it impossible not to love all the ponies, since I think I’m a mix of all of them. I’m a reader and sometimes so busy in my own little world I get distracted from the real world (Twilight Sparkle), I can get insanely hyper and giggly (Pinkie Pie), I’m Southern, friendly, and a bit stubborn (AppleJack), I have a bit of a competitive edge to me and I’m a dreamer (Rainbow Dash), I’m sometimes quiet and feel more comfortable with animals than people (Fluttershy), and I have this “thing” for fashion, decoration, and glitter (Rarity). Yeah, I am so glad I started watching this show… actually, part of the reason I finally decided to watch it online, besides the influence of MLP art on DisneyCreate, was actually thanks to TDIT!

Oh wow, I’m deeply honoured, ObsessedWithPixar! How did I convince you, exactly?

Also, forgive my ignorance, but what’s DisneyCreate?

Imagine my surprise when I saw a local news report on Bronycon in New York! It’s incredible how these kind of events are now entering mainstream media as far away as in Singapore. Unfortunately, it was on mute at my newsroom, but thankfully a Brony uploaded it for posterity on Youtube.

My workdesk in the newsroom. Recognise the lady onscreen?

Bronies on Channel NewsAsia!

First of all, TDIT, I don’t know how it is you actually convinced me, because I’d been thinking of watching MLP for a long time, but I guess because you were one of the first people I met here who I knew was a MLP fan, and then I thought “OWP, you’ve seriously got to watch this show!” Of course, it was the accumulation of things. Anyway, as for your second question, DisneyCreate is otherwise known as Create, and it’s a portion of the Disney website. Disney put together a bunch of cool apps like Digital Painters, Comic Creators, and a Flipbook Creator, some themed for Disney shows and movies and some not. When you join Disney, you get access to Create and you can use the apps to create almost anything and share them with others. It’s kind of like deviantArt, but you create artwork only with their apps. It lots of fun! It’s through Create that I learned gradually more and more about MLP through friends’ artwork (even though it’s DisneyCreate, they still allow most other characters drawn there).

lennonluvr9, I know what you mean, I felt that way about AJ and actually a couple other ponies for a while, but as time passed I grew to love them all pretty equally. I’m glad you’re enjoying it though. How far are you?

Thanks to YouTube I watched both seasons over the period of about a month, so i’m all caught up with it  My brother actually watched the wedding episode with me! (and this is a guy in his mid 30s) Granted he wasnt into the singing but it kept his attention! I personally couldnt believe it

OWP: Haha, wow okay it’s nice to know I convinced you… somehow. Thanks for the explanation for Disney Create - I’ve gotta try it out if it’s still up! I’m also surprised they’re a bit lax with the whole copyright issues, especially when it comes to fans creating fanart of characters not from their stable (pardon the pun)!

lennonluvr: Believe it! I’ve even read about soldiers saying the show gives them strength to keep going to get back home to their loved ones and similar remarkable tales. The level of cross-generational and cultural appeal this show has is unprecedented since, well, a certain Burbank company that makes animated and live-action films for all ages!

Most of you who have been following my (mis)adventures would know I’m working in the news in Singapore. Couldn’t resist sneaking in a MLP reference yesterday for today’s paper. Can you find it?

Okay, my first impression on hearing about this show at all, just from the title, was not good. It sounded super cheesy and girly, it made me laugh at it. And then when I heard how many teenagers/adults are obsessed with it, I was like, “Wait, this is a joke, right? They can’t be serious…” Then when I saw it as a discussed topic on this forum, I admit, my first impression was facepalm.

But wait! Then I actually decided to give it a chance. At first I watched it to make fun of it. But they really caught my attention with the prologue on the first episode- beautiful animation for a little girls’ show. That’s the best animation I’ve seen in a kid’s show in years. And the story was interesting. But I told myself I was gonna only watch one and was not gonna get into it.

And now? Now I watch an episode almost every day. I can’t believe it, but I’m actually into My Little Pony. , I’m into a lot of cartoons, but I didn’t expect to like this. The theme song and the title sounds cheesy (but it is made for little kids in the first place), but the rest is good. The characters are cool, their once-in-a-while references to Greek mythology are really enjoyable, and the lessons actually are really good- like, they could still apply to any age. They aren’t just “I learned that you have to use the magic words please and thank you” stuff that you see on preschool shows. They deal with real stuff like when friends fight, or trying to please everyone, or resisting judgment. I actually…I actually get reminded good lessons from this.

It’s hard for me to choose my favorite character. I love Fluttershy because she’s just so cute and sweet with animals, and her voice is nice, especially when singing. <3 But I also love Pinky Pie for being crazy and random- those are the best kinds of characters for me. ;-o

I’m very happy that you’ve given it a shot and like it! It’s definitely an easy thing to be miffed by at first. xD I first discovered it from another forum about a year and a half ago, and was so confused, I thought it was a joke. But you’re right, and the lessons taught in each episode are applicable for all kinds of people in all age ranges! I love Fluttershy too. I’ve grown to love all of the ‘Mane 6’ a lot with time.

How far into it are you?

Oh my goodness, it’s been yonkers since you were last here, BDD! It’s good to see you again!

I’m really glad you gave it a shot. You actually put into words one of the best aspects I love about the show - so many children’s show nowadays are about violence and kicking the Monster of the Week’s *ss, with a moral shoehorned into it at the end. Or a high-school or fantasy setting that tries to be hip or be non-sequitur on purpose (The Regular Show and Adventure Time are two examples I can think of, although they’re apparently pretty good).

MLP is a return to 90s-era high-adventure storylines that manages to be charming without trying too hard. It just won me over so effortlessly - I don’t know, maybe it’s how honest and non-snarky the characters are (with the exception of a few like Spike or Diamond Tiara), or how they remind me of Disney musicals when they break into song, or maybe it’s because it deals with real-life dilemmas you can relate to.

And of course, the fandom is one of the best and most welcoming this side of Pixar. Naturally, you get the weird fringe guys who draw obscene art or take their hobbies too far by annoying McDonalds staff, but that comes with the territory. The majority are some of the friendliest and nicest guys and girls you’ll get to know, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting up with some of them in real-life.

Anyway, I’m glad you’re liking it, BDD, and like Leirin, I’m curious to know which episode you’re at now.
