My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Hopefully if Derpy crops up again with a speaking role sometime soon, they’ll elaborate on her character a bit more. Like Metalguru said, most other ‘dumb’ characters on TV have interesting backstories and personalities, but the thing about Derpy is that we don’t have either of those yet. All her minute or so of screentime showed us is that she’s over-enthusiastic and extremely clumsy.
I’m not saying that they should insert her as the weird, bubbly pony who is there mostly for comic relief (we already have Pinkie Pie for that), but it would be nice to see some character development outside of the mane 6 and Spike. Heck, I’ve been wishing for an episode when the main cast visits Canterlot or something for the episode, leaving the background ponies time to get some screentime, like they did with that episode of The Simpsons where they just randomly zoomed around the town. Of course, that would completely annihilate the majority of the fanon. As much as it annoys me, I doubt we’d ever see Lyra and Bon Bon actually interacting together as a couple on-screen (although the animators have made a darn good job of pairing them up in Season 2 so far) because it ‘wouldn’t be politically correct’ (which shows what absolutely little progress has been made in the exposure of non-traditional couples to children… :unamused: )

Anyway, backing off the ‘lesbian pony’ rant, the newest episode (Hearts and Hooves Day) was accidentally leaked 3 days early by iTunes! They seem to have rectified their mistake and made it unavailable for purchase, but some generous person has uploaded it onto YouTube for all to see. You can view it here in HD, or you can just wait for the youtube links after it airs, I guess.

I watched it just before starting a short shift at work- thanks! I feel like I should have waited but I’m weak. -Hangs head in shame-

In the end this was better than what I feared. Love potions in general kind of can skeeve me out a bit with how they’re shown in media as totally okay. So honestly I liked the fact it was shown to be a bad thing- my one nitpick would be that I’d think ALL love potions were ‘poisons’ myself but eh. (So at best that Prince was horribly selfish even if the potion had worked the way he intended.) Plus interesting that it had a darkish past their holiday. I mean I believe that the whole story of Valentine loving an executioners daughter and being executed was false if I remember correctly but its still interesting.

I loved how the lesson was basically [spoil]shipping ponies is bad and you should feel bad for doing it.[/spoil]

[spoiler]Heh. Well in CMC’s case, Big Mac and Cheerilee are real people rather than just characters. Still in the end end for a relationship to work, it needs romantic feelings on BOTH sides. Plus they were trying to affect real life ‘canon’ as it were rather than simply writing fics/making fanart. If it’s one sided or no-sided in their case, it wasn’t going to work. But well… many people do find Real Person Fic to be a tad creepy sometimes… I remember the first day I ran across it- a hard core Bush/Cheney fic. Hardly the nicest introduction to such a concept. I have come across less mind breaking things to date, though as a general rule RPF is not my thing and unless a friend recommended it, I don’t seek it out.

I kind of like the fact that Cheerilee and Big Mac are being friends though rather than ended romantically- we need more male/female platonic relationships. Also did anyone catch that Twist and the chubby male pony were hugging? And that a female classmate gave Diamond Tiara a card and DT approved in the same short shot? Nice little details there. Plus Caramel has a girl friend! And “Doctor Whooves” was with a certain crossed eyed pegasus on a bridge too.[/spoiler]

I loved this episode. I do think it was a jab at the obsessive shippers. Just because you THINK two ponies should get together doesn’t mean they will, and trying to force them together despite their lack of interest won’t make it canon. Despite that, it was absolutely hilarious, and I actually enjoyed the CMC,which I usually don’t at all. Plus, Big Mac spoke multiple full sentences! Has he done that since his first episode?

He said a couple of lines at the start of Applebuck Season, but since then it’s all been ‘eeyup’ and ‘nnope’.
The synopsis for episode 20’s up!
[spoil]Twilight’s future self visits her and brings a warning.

Time travel? If Dr. Whooves is somehow involved I’ll have a freaking heart attack.[/spoil]

Switching over from the show to the actual toys, it looks like Hasbro cares about us after all! That whole kerfuffle with Derpy Hooves and taking down the videos uploaded to YouTube had me worried there for a second. Anyway, in addition to Princess Cadence and Shining Armor (I’m pretty sure they’ll be in a two-parter as the season finale), Hasbro had some other ponies on display at the NYC Toy Fair… Nightmare Moon, a glow-in-the-dark Zecora, Vinyl Scratch/DJ Pon3, Daisy (“The horror, the horror!” pony), the GREAT AND POWERFUL Trixie, Lemon Tart (random backgroun pony), Lyra/Heartstrings and… a white Celestia!

From the looks of it, Vinyl Scratch’s glassed won’t be removable so her eye colour will remain a mystery. I’m also interested in which route they’re going to take with Lyra’s name… whether they go with Heartstrings (which I’m guessing they have the rights to, but got an enormous negative reaction) or Lyra (which they don’t have the rights to, but would make everyone much happier)
Nightmare Moon! YAY! I wasn’t sure if they were going to actually release one because her mane in the show wasn’t so much hair as it was sparkly gas, but they’ve managed to pull it off.
I am extremely looking forward to Cadence and Shining Armor’s release. Mainly because they’re 2 new sculpts, so Cadence can easily be repainted to have an accurate Luna, and Shining Armor can be re-done as Blueblood!
I was never really interested in the gigantic Celestia, but it’s nice to see that they’ve toned down with the pink. Zecora looks pretty good as well, but I’m not all that keen on the glow in the dark part of it.

Apparently they’re going to be Toys R Us exclusives though… o_0
I’m going to have to go searching on eBay for them, or pay an American brony to buy and ship them here, because the nearest Toys R Us to me’s about 2 hours away and I’m not entirely certain if they’re going to be sold in Australia at all!

:open_mouth: Agreed. All I want is a line. A single, solitary line, preferably with a British accent. That is ALL I want.

And all those toys…AND STILL NO DISCORD. :frowning: I suppose a Discord toy would be a little too much to ask, but by God the amount of money I would pay for one…(if ya don’t know–my friends sure do–Discord is my favorite character, followed by Twilight Sparkle)

YES! My thoughts exactly! I was completely thrilled by the toy news, but I will not be fully satisfied till we get a nice, full-bodied, bendy Discord figure!! 8D

A bit late here (especially considering the ep was prematurely released), but seeing it’s Valentine’s Day, I might as well put in my few cents on the recent ep.

Usually I enjoy the CMC eps, it’s sort of the ‘beta’ group of friends to the Mane Six, and this episode’s no exception. I thought it would be incredibly annoying to watch them basically try to force two ponies into a relationship, but their reactions somehow come off so precious and earnest that it ended up being adorable for me. Of course, the road to hay is paved with good intentions, and we eventually see the meddlesome trio get their comeuppance in the end.

And of course, it was fun watching Big Mac and Cherilee going googly-eyed at each other. It’s also astounding how easy it is to make a ‘roofie’ in the pony universe, not to mention how ripped Mac is pulling an entire house (and one pony) in it.

I half-expected the trio to fail the attempt to keep them apart and try something else, but when it succeeded, I realised the episode was ending already and that was the climax! Just goes to show time flies when you’re watching ponies.

I caught Twist pinning the tail on Cherilee, but all the rest… HNNNGGG :open_mouth: I must keep my eyes peeled, perfect excuse for a rewatch!

Last week I was browsing IMDB and by chance came across the page for this show. I was surprised and intrigued by the high rating it received so I decided to watch an episode or two on YouTube.

I got hooked. I just finished the entire first season and I can’t believe how enjoyable it is; it’s very funny, clever, and sometimes flat-out bizarre. Some of the episodes work less for me than others but as a whole this is what I want more of out of children’s programming.

I’m not sure I want to begin season 2 yet because I hate the feeling of having to wait another week for the next episode, but I guess I’m officially a “brony” now.

Waiting for the next episode’s part of the fun!
I was kind of the same, I actually saw the MLP page on Know Your Meme and downloaded (and watched) the entire first season over the course of one night.

I actually really like waiting for the next episode, especially since I watch the livestream. There’s all sorts of conversations and jokes and Derpy sightings going on in the chatbox!

Ugh, I want to see the new episode so freaking badly! Not only will it be the first Twilight Sparkle episode since, what, Lesson Zero, but it will also be about FREAKING TIME TRAVELLING. There is NO way the writers will pass up another chance to make such an obvious fandom nod with Doctor Whooves. I actually think the episode was written solely so they COULD make that obvious nod.

Great Scott! I can’t wait for next week’s episode! Future Twilight looks so epic and NO WAY there can’t be a nod to Doctor Whooves!! It also looks like a very important question that’s baffled the world for centuries will be answered: Is time travel fun? XD

I love how present Twilight is all “WHAT? TIME TRAVEL IS POSSIBLE?” and future Twilight’s like “Uh yeah, it’s common knowledge available in the Canterlot public library.”

I’m hoping that the fact that future Twilight knows how to time-travel and present Twilight doesn’t leads to a trip to Canterlot to find the spell - and hopefully some more screentime for Celestia and Luna! They’ve been pretty neglected this season.

In terms of the season finale… I’ll spoiler it in case someone doesn’t want to know the gist of it.
[spoil]So there’s this random pink Alicorn named Princess Cadence, who has already caused a lot of anger throughout the fandom because of her Alicorn-iness, and she’s getting married to a Unicorn, Shining Armor. Twilight and co are apparently (according to the real-life playsets at least) going to be the bridesmaids, which begs the question ‘why are they taking part in a completely random pony wedding?’.
Except, you know, Shining Armor is Twilight’s brother.

It sounds like the premise of a badly-written fanfic, but I have faith in the studio and know they’ll manage to pull it off. “Suited for Success” is one of my favourite episodes and the basic premise is ‘Rarity makes dresses’, so they’ll find a way to make a magical pink pony wedding interesting.[/spoil]

I was worried when when it was announced that Princess Candace is an Alicorn, but as long as there’s a good explanation for it, I’ll be a happy Brony. The revelation of Shinning Armor being Twilight’s brother is also shocking to say the least. But I guess it isn’t really once you think about it; their parents were only seen once in a flashback without speaking roles for 20-seconds and we had no idea that Pinkie Pie had two sister until we learned how Equestria was made!

[spoiler]Shining Armor being Twilight’s brother does make sense - he has the same body colour as their mother and the same hair colour (kind of) as their father. His cutie mark also looks like Twilight’s - but with a shield surrounding the star. It also helps justify why Twilight and friends are actually attending the wedding to begin with - him being a relative makes much more sense than becoming bridesmaids for two completely random ponies.

Cadence was originally a Pegasus (coming straight from the mouth of Faust!) but they (and by they I mean Hasbro, not Studio B) gave her a horn for some reason. Probably to sell more toys. Anyway, there’s really only two ways they can go dealing with her Alicorn-iness - either leave the script as-is from when she was a Pegasus, or utilise the fact that Hasbro intervened and give us some info on where they come from. My money’s betting on the latter considering it’s a 2-parter finale, which means double the time for character development!

This also leads to an interesting point - Lauren Faust was involved in the wedding story! Either she had it all planned out before the other season 2 episodes and then left, or she was involved in the entire season to some extent.
Her surprise at both Cadence being an Alicorn and Luna having a new mane have made me think - maybe the animators gave Luna her new hair to differentiate the ‘god-mode’ Alicorns from the regular ones, like Cadence.

I’m pretty excited for the season finale either way! 8D[/spoiler]

The fact alone that Lauren Faust involved with the season finale is reassuring. I suppose the writers and animates wanted to give Alicorns an explanation and the wedding of Princess Candace and Shinning Armor was the perfect opportunity for that.

I, for one, was greatly disappointed in the lack of a Doctor scene in this episode.

I need to catch up. I have like 6 episodes of this on my DVR. 8D

Well that was an… interesting episode to say the least. 2 new [spoil]pony cities (Las Pegasus and Baltimare[/spoil]) and, well, [spoil]Greek Mythology as Equestria’s religious system is basically confirmed with the inclusion of Tartarus and Cerberus.[/spoil]

I loved seeing Tardy Twilight pop up again for a bit, and the Pinkie Pie parts were hilarious.
The hourglass at the end seemed to be counting down toward something - the pony wedding perhaps?
All in all, I have to say that these last few episodes leading up to the season finale would have to be some of my favourite - plenty of character development, new species/creatures and plenty of world building in preparation for the Cadence episodes!
