Mygames19's Fangame, Sonic CD 2

Alight, time to completely re-write this post! Because the project is no longer a secret and I still want some opinions.

So, welcome to the Sonic CD 2 discussion topic! Here, I’ll be posting updates to my Sonic The Hedgehog based fangame, Sonic CD 2. Feel free to give me comments and/or constructive criticism.

This game has been in the works since new years of 2008. I worked on the engine for a while, published a video of it on Youtube, than put the project behind me for other things. Than I came back to it in the fall of 2009, revamped all of the graphics, added a few more features… and again, put it back on hold.

Now it’s 2010, and over the past couple weeks I’ve been working on the project again. I’ve been re-tuning the level structure so it doesn’t feel linear and it doesn’t feel like your just running straight the whole time. The game is still a ways away from a public release, as I still have about 2/3 left of the level to add palm trees, bushes, etc. and some redesigning of the stage to go with it. There’s also Badniks that need to be designed and programmed, a scrolling background that needs fixing, and a Title Screen that needs to be done.

However, I still want your opinions. I know that, for most Sonic fans at least, the Title Sonic CD 2 is not a good title choice, because it means having to live up to the original title. I’ve been considering renaming to project, but I’m not sure what to call it if I do. If you have any suggestions, than by all means let me know.

Now, onto some pictures so you can give me some feedback!

There’s an image from a few months ago. As you can see, the game is in widescreen. There’s also Palmtrees, a bush, a water fountain shaped like a star and even some flowers. The game’s graphics might look a tad odd, but that’s because all of it’s hand-drawn.

^ This is just a very small portion of the layout in the game. In this picture, we see 3 branching paths: If you jump over the red spring, it will send you into a tunnel and down to the lower path. If you jump on the spring, it will take you to the upper path where those platforms are. If you jump over the gap, than you can take the middle path.

I’m sorry I can’t show you guys more, but… I can’t! Most of the project is still a secret, mostly because I don’t want anyone stealing any ideas I’ve got or stealing any of my hand-drawn images.

If you want a (SMALL) Glimpse at what you might expect from the game, you can try out JSonic, a Sonic game I was creating while attending Programming 2 at my high school. It uses a lot of graphics from this game and represents what the first stage might look like. You can check that out here:

Thanks for checking out my topic, and I hope I can get some C&C! :sunglasses:

Is it something to do with Sonic the Hedgehog?

rachelcakes1985: Indeed, it does! Honestly though, I feel that was almost a given because of my background… heh. XD

I know that this topic is quite old, but I felt it would be better for me to revive the old topic than create a new one. Yes, the project is in fact Sonic CD 2: A Negative Space. Quite a Title…

Ether way, I’ve updated the whole first post to reflect this. I’d be grateful if I could get any Comments on what I’ve shown so far, it would tell me Wether I’m on the right track or not.

Thanks!

Wow… all of that is completely hand-drawn?!? :open_mouth: Holy cow! This looks just like the first Sonic the Hedgehog game (which I hope you’ll take as a compliment)! How many levels are you planning on putting in it?

I’m a big fan of the old Sonic the Hedgehog… and I just gotta say that this looks fantastic. :-D) What are you going to do with it once it’s done?

Thanks Daughter of Eve! Yes, all of the graphics are hand-drawn, than scanned and coloured in GIMP.

I’m glad you like it and see similarities with the original Sonic. That’s what I’m going for! :sunglasses:

I honestly don’t think I’ll ever finish this, I’ve been working on it for 2 years and the first stage isn’t even done yet. (Of course, that might also be because I keep putting the project off for long periods of time and than coming back to it… lol)

I don’t even understand how you were able to do that on GIMP. I had the hardest time with GIMP before I switched to Photoshop.

Oh, no problem! I just happened to come across this thread, and I just totally geeked out. But seriously, you should finish this. It looks too good to just throw away.
