Mysterious Line in TS1 commentary

At the pizza planet Scene on the Commentary on the toy story 1 dvd they talk about Rex grignon a Animator And something about Complex models then andrew stanton goes “He’s dead now” and they all laugh and John says "Hes still working on the shot he’ll be done next week’ That puzzled me what was the purpose of the Joke i don’t get it

IMDB says he went from Toy Story to Antz. I guess he jumped ship or got canned.

Why did he switch?

Same reason Jeff Katz did. He’s a scum bag.

No need to bash the guy. plenty of animators go to and from Pixar, Dreamworks, even video games. its all in the same line of work.

It still seems like traitorial behavior to me, but I’m…biased.

It’d only be traitorous if he brought ideas from one studio to another. unless your suggesting he gave Dreamworks the heads up that Pixar was doing an Ant movie so they could copy it. but my point is there’s talent everywhere. Pixar just happens to have directors that know how to better challenge everyone working there to get the most out of them. I bet if you were to lend some of the pixar brain trust to Dreamworks you’d end up with a film almost as successful as one of Pixar’s. (I say almost because as soon as you get rid of the Pixar brand name your bound to not get quite as much attention) but the quality would likely still be there.

Agreed with Kyle. Besides, it’s not like he could’ve known anything about the overall quality of the studio when Antz production began.

I believe the joke was a reference to how difficult the scene was to animate and put together. So they were joking that it was SO hard to do that he died in the process/ still hasn’t finished.

No, the joke is that he’s dead because he’s still working on the joke. I don’t even think Antz was in production at the end of TS1.

Yeah, I can imagine the busy scenes of Pizza Planet would be painstaking, as they seemed to cut back on human models, but were forced to make a busy environment. Either way, since Dreamworks Animation was established, I think in this case, the guy just had a talent and was looking for work. Either way, I’d still forgive him because of his role in Toy Story.

I second this. I’m sure the ‘he’s dead now’ joke was just due to the complexity of the scene.

Pixar isn’t usually one to be snide about , ‘Oh, he left for greener pastures, he’s dead to our mode of working.’
