Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

An awesome Japanese animated Sci-fi/fantasy adventure that marked the debut for Studio Ghibli. It was a major box-office and critical success for the studio and also the manga was best selling in 1981 while the film was in production.

It came out here in the USA from New World Pictures in 1985 in a butchered dubbed version called “Warriors of the Wind” which featured Hal Smith and Linda Gary as voices. Miyazaki was not pleased, i did loved this movie as a kid in the mid 80’s when i was 5 and didn’t realize that Warriors of the Wind was a bad butchery until i saw the uncut fansub film in my high school’s anime club at 16 back in 97 as i copied that fansub tape onto another tape and still owned the Warriors cut. Thank god that in 2005 Disney re-issued the film with a superior dub that has a great cast including Patrick Stewart and uncut including using the Japanese language with subtitles.

Anyone thinks this movie is one of the inspirations to James Cameron’s Avatar? it’s common knowledge that Cameron is a fan of Miyazaki/Ghibli productions even when he wrote Avatar’s script in 1993 as he read the manga and even seen the anime of Nausicaa before writing his film.

Just saw this for the first time a couple weeks ago. Its a great film all around, Miyazaki never disappoints.

I adore this movie! Interesting history with Warriors of the Wind, I’m curious to see it even if it is horrendously botched up, heh.

I owned the score since i was 16 and has been one of my fave scores of all time.

Can anyone compare this movie to James Cameron’s Avatar? there are similarities including the imagery, the Ohmnus being like the Enwhy Tree bringing a body back to life, eco-saving message, similar villain, similar atmosphere and that kind of thing. Cameron’s fave Miyazaki movie is this one and you can tell how similar it is including that he also used Mononoke, Castle in The Sky, Pom Poko and Totoro as other Ghibli references to show his love for Ghibli films.

If it was, I wouldn’t care. I mean, I’m a Disney fan, so I don’t care about defacing of famous stories.

Anywhos, I love this movie, too!!! I love the animation, the character of Nausicaa, and the music. <3 It’s amazing, and my second favorite Ghibli film(after Princess Mononoke.)
