Basically, you can suggest composers for Pixar films in the future. I still stand by what I said three years ago that Danny Elfman would be just divine in this role. He’s an excellent composer; one of my favorites, and his recent work is just wonderful. His dark, moody score for The Wolfman compliments the piece superbly.
Here’s a full list of his films, as well as the box office intake:
Well, Hans Zimmer always has some nice scores. I really like all his work in Christopher Nolan’s films, and I especially love his score for The Lion King. If Pixar did something a little darker, edgier, or of similar tone to that, I think he would be an excellent choice!
I’m not too familiar with composers, though. John Williams has great stuff, but maybe he is too cliche to hire by this point. Then again, he brought so much magic to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone…
I haven’t seen La Vie en Rose yet, but I hear Christopher Gunning did a great job with the score. Maybe he’ll consider Pixar!
I do remember posting on the original thread, so I’m not gonna repeat my choice here. Danny Elfman would be a fun choice, though! I could easily go with that.
PLEASE no Elfman. One or two decent scores, but everything is SO MUCH the same. And that terrible music he wrote for Nightmare Before Christmas… I suppose the only thing worse than the music in that were the inane lyrics.
I think he’s a good composer despite the fact that he can be same-y sometimes. Edward Scissorhands shows that he can be a good composer and break from his style. I’d love to see/hear a score like that for a Pixar movie.
Although my favorite Danny Elfman score is for his brother’s film Forbidden Zone and his (first) score for Brad Bird’s Family Dog, I love his work for Edward Scissorhands. I just don’t care for much since.
If you like Edward Scissorhands, though, you’ll probably LOVE this:
Danny Elfman isn’t always same-y, at least not more than (and in most cases, a good deal less than) other contemporary film composers. Wisdom, Midnight Run, Sommersby, Black Beauty, Dolores Claiborne, Mission: Impossible, Good Will Hunting, Instinct, A Simple Plan, The Family Man, The Kingdom, Standard Operating Procedure, and Taking Woodstock are all different and a departure from the style that he uses a lot of the time. His music may not be to everyone’s taste, but it certainly is not all the same.
That said, I’m glad Michael Giacchino has become a regular collaborator for Pixar. Land of the Lost aside, I love all the music he’s done.
There’s a handful of composers that I would like to see score Pixar films, but it would be neat if newcomer James Peterson were given a chance. His score for Red Canvas is terrific and the Moving Images Suite contained on the CD shows that he can compose for a variety of different moods and settings.
Curently, I’m rooting for David Hirschfelder. He did a remarkable job with LOTG, and I’m eager to see the film Australia (which he also scored) to hear more of his repertoire.
I think I also mentioned this in the original thread, but I’d love to see John Powell score an Incredibles sequel if it is ever made. He shows he can make great action themes like in the Bourne series and Bolt, but balance it with emotional depth like in HTTYD and Kung Fu Panda. Another candidate I wound consider is Pharrell Williams, who did the orchestral score for Despicable Me. I love the cues of the main theme woven into the slick spy-themed score throughout the movie, it’s a real pity that the instrumentals are not available on the soundtrack.
Who else? Oh! Maybe James Horner. He does a pretty good job with epic scores, like with Avatar and The Last Samurai, but the reason he didn’t come to mind was because he tends to ‘recycle’ his themes.
Wow, I didn’t realize so many people have it out for Elfman… I understand that it is all a matter of opinion, and, yes, some of his scores are better than others, but, at least for me, he delivers the goods every time. His next score is for the Russell Crowe picture The Next Three Days.
I suggested Powell on the old thread, too; mainly on the strength of his scores for the majority of Blue Sky’s films. He is also very good with action pieces, I have to say.
I think it would be interesting to see Alan Menken compose a Pixar film. I know he’s known for Disney musicals, but I just wonder what it would be like.
Well, Patrick Doyle is currently slated (if it doesn’t change) to score Brave.
Though he’s not exactly a “new” composer (except as far as Pixar is concerned).
I thought of this today, and it’s blowing my mind:
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross.
For those who don’t know, Reznor is best known as the leader of the band Nine Inch Nails, and has recently become a film composer, working on his first two films so far with Ross.
They won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for David Fincher’s The Social Network, and have re-teamed with him to score his adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (I expect they’ll be scoring the following two films in the series as well).
