New Up Trailer!!!!

I have this trailer memorized, along with the others, but maybe that’s just because we loop it all day at work (Disney Store). All my fellow Cast Members can quote it now too. (Along with the Cars Toons and Hannah Montannah songs…)

You guys have come up with some great inferences. Personally I don’t like analyzing the film before it’s released so I’m not going to join in. But great work though, it’s obvious we’re all really excited for UP!

I 've been watching it two times per day since I gave up and saw it for the first time  My sister can’t stand this  (Although she’s pretty excited for Up)

Mitch- Those two ideas go hand in hand. Carl probably loses so many balloons that he has to lighten his load by dumping furniture from his house. But looking at that shot, the furniture falls really slowly, for some reason.

Also, I watch the trailer at least once or twice a day.

Ha! Well, I’m glad I’m not the only geek around here. (snigger)

Hog-Hug - They play the trailer continuously at your Disney Store, eh? That would probably be happening at the Disney Store in my area… if it still existed. When Ratatouille was first released on DVD they played the trailer for it 24/7, so I can definitely see them advertising Up in a similar way.

Bryko614 - Indeed. And yeah, I noticed that about the furniture, as well. Perhaps it falls on top of something ([spoil]one of the airplanes or the blimp, maybe[/spoil]), causing it to slowly descend?

– Mitch

watched the trailer at least once a day, and been sharing it with anyone who will listen. I am infected with UP fever! I try to temper my expectations though so that when I see it I will be blown away! (pun intended)

So I went to watch Land of the Lost yesterday, and while it was a pretty ‘adult’ comedy, they ran a lot of ‘kiddy flick’ trailers as part of the pre-screening program. So I was excited (although I was kinda anticipating it, since I knew they were gonna aim to the young and young-at-heart audience who would be watching LotL) when they ran the Up trailer.

But I got an even a bigger surprise when some new footage was shown on the trailer that was not shown in the original! To clarify, this is the final trailer that starts with Russell asking Carl if he needs assistance. From there, it’s the same stuff up till the point where Carl sees Tepui for the first time. Then suddenly, they showed a shot from ‘Ditch Em’ where [spoil]the house knocks into some trees above the canopy.[/spoil]

Then they go on to the part where they meet Dug, but then again, instead of cutting to the tagline card after Dug says ‘Squirrel’, they continue with footage from ‘Meet Dug’ where [spoil]Kevin bowls Dug over and Dug asks if he can take the bird as his prisoner. Then they end with Russell asking if he can keep Dug and protesting that it’s “a talking dog!” when Carl refuses.[/spoil]

Following that, they show the tagline cards, the dogs chase them, all the same footage, then Russell smacks against the glass and gets dragged, right? Except it goes on longer than in the original trailer with the shot of Muntz’ blank stare going on for a few seconds more.

After that, it’s same-same again until Russell chucks the GPS out of the window and goes “Oops.” Then they cut straight to the title card without showing Dug’s translator collar and “I would be happy if you stopped.”

Is this unique to my cinema chain (Greater Union), or is this a ‘localised’ cut for Oz? I’m interested to see if anyone in Oz who has watched the trailer in theatres recently have seen this modified version, or in any countries for that matter. The crowd reaction was awesome, though! A couple of big laughs and guffaws at the appropriate moments.

That’s the international trailer, which had a few pointless cosmetic changes from the original.

Ah, thanks Bryko! I wouldn’t exactly call them “pointless” though, some fans who haven’t seen the Meet Dug and Ditch Em’ clips might be surprised by the new footage…

The other night, near midnight, I saw the saddest movie trailer, EVER, and it’s from Pixar Up. I almost cried. It’s only with Carl, Ellie, and their house. Russell is not there. At this time, this is how UP or Grandpa Carl’s Flying House in Japan is being marketed; it’s heartfelt to the MAX. Anyway the edited scenes start with [spoil]ten year old Carl walking pass the UP house with a blue balloon, then meets ten year old Ellie in the UP house, then in the tent, then with Ellie’s MY ADVENTURE BOOK with the words printed “Paradise Falls, a land lost in time”, then with a flash of light it’s their wedding day, then to the mailbox with their names Carl & Ellie freshly painted with hand prints on it too, then their glass savings jug for Paradise Falls; Ellie crosses her heart and so does Carl, then the different generation necktie knot scene, then to the hospital when they were seventy years old, then the at the funeral parlor. Finally the house flies up away into the clouds with a howling wind in the background. What a sad ending. Carl is totally alone in that house[/spoil] at the end of the trailer.

The audience knows this is an adventure movie from previous trailers, but WOW, this just hits you in thirty seconds because you never see a [spoil]sad end coming from Disney/Pixar[/spoil] in a movie trailer.

The male narrator says: (direct translation)

[spoil]This story is about you…I met you in this house and made a promise…We swore the love in this house and dreamed…We were getting old in the house. Then one day…[/spoil]
.
I’ll try to find a Youtube link.

Added: swore [spoil]the love[/spoil]
Whoa. I got to be careful all the time.

Wow! Amazing Rey! Please find the YouTube link. I wondered why they did not release that part in the trailer. Perhaps it’s a marketing strategy or obviously Pixar won’t reveal their great scenes in the movie.

I wish they advertised it like that in the US. Basic excerpt of US ad:

“FUNNY! FUNNY! FUNNY! FUNNIEST FILM OF 2009! SQUIRREL!!!”

LOL Bryko614. BTW, I love your new avy and sig!

Heh, you got that right. And then I started seeing comments online from people complaining that the movie was too sad/depressing/upsetting, because they expected just a silly superficial broad comedy and weren’t prepared for the emotional heart of the film.

I was bothered by some of the marketing as well. Up isn’t a comedy in the slightest. It’s got plenty of lighthearted humor, but a comedy to me is a movie that’s about being funny. It’s not built around humor, it’s built around a beautiful story. It’d be hard to market the movie that way without giving too much away, and I was very pleasantly surprised that it was such a heartfelt tale, I wasn’t expecting that. However, the trailers mislead you and make it seem that the main theme of the movie is the humor which is terribly untrue.

All in all, I’m glad they didn’t spoil the emotional sections of the movie, and favored more minor segments in the trailers, but it still could have been done way better. Also, the way some of the scenes are set up, you’re not supposed to know about some of the stuff in the trailers ([spoil]Kevin, Kevin being a girl, Dug speaking, Muntz being the antagonist, flying dogs, etc[/spoil]) and that irritated me a bit, but I guess it’s my fault since I milked every clip an feature for what it was worth before it came out.

Well, if there’s one thing that I think Pixar fails on, time and time again, it’s their trailers and the advertising of their movies, and it seems as though the same has happened with Up. It’s as though Pixar throw that “animation isn’t just for kids” ethos out of the window when it comes to their trailers, and I think it’s a shame, though it does mean that adults accompanying children might be pleasantly surprised by just how much emotion there is in Up.

There was someone around here (I can’t remember who it was, sorry) who said they wish they hadn’t shown Muntz in the trailer, so [spoil]we could get the shock along with Carl that is childhood hero is trying to kill him[/spoil], and I pretty much agree.

Of course, then we wouldn’t have gotten the “Can anyone tell me, WHERE THEY ARE?!?!” scene, and that pretty much sold me on a first-day viewing.

I wasn’t the one who said it, but I kind of agree about Muntz - although it’s hard to do a trailer that tells you much about the movie without spoiling things.

The “Can anyone tell me WHERE THEY ARE?” bit ended up being even better in the movie because of [spoil]the context of all the dogs barking and talking all at once, and Muntz’s frustration with them - guess having a crew of dozens of dogs with talking collars didn’t turn out as great as it sounded at the time. And then the bit of Russell being dragged across the window is even funnier because it just goes on and on and on…[/spoil]

Went to the cinema tonight and saw a trailer for Up that I hadn’t seen before (though take into consideration I haven’t seen any of the ones on the internet, so it’s probably a well known one). New clips included a bit where [spoil]Carl throws one of the tennis balls from the end of his walker for Dug to go and get (love that bit where Dug leaves it on his lap!) and another bit where Carl is telling Kevin to go away but Kevin keeps imitating him.[/spoil]

I’m sure this is old news but it’s exciting anyway. I almost teared up in the cinema watching the trailer, though I don’t know why.

Haha! That’s great lizardgirl! If you were that enamored just from the trailer, you’re probably gonna LOVE the movie! Good deal! By the way, yeah, those are some old clips. Sounds like the standard trailer.

WARNING. THIS TRAILER WILL AT LEAST MAKE YOUR EYES WATER UP AND YOU WILL CATCH YOURSELF TALKING UP WITH A HIGH PITCHED VOICE. Well, for me, it did.

I call this the “Midnight Special” because it’s only shown near midnight here in Japan.

There is a sixty second version of this from the 24hour Television Telethon. It’s a little cuter, but still emotional with that howling wind at the end. Hoowwwwwwwwww!
