Never heard of this award before, though it says it’s the 8th annual one.
Maybe a foreshadow of the Academy Awards? Who knows.
From Variety:
LONDON — Composers Dario Marianelli (“Atonement”), Thomas Newman (“Wall-E”) and Alberto Iglesias (“The Kite Runner”) have nabbed two noms each for the World Soundtrack Award.
The kudofest, which gives out prizes for original score, original song, composer of the year and World Soundtrack Discovery, takes place on the closing evening of Belgium’s Ghent Intl. Film Festival, Oct. 18.
Other notable nominees include Radiohead lead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, who composed the soundtrack for “There Will Be Blood,” and, in the song category, Diane Warren (“American Gangster”), Eddie Vedder (“Into the Wild”), Peter Gabriel (“Wall-E”) and Shakira (“Love in the Time of Cholera”).
David Lynch’s regular composer Angelo Badalamenti (“Blue Velvet,” “Mulholland Drive”) and Marianelli will be present at the event, where their music will be performed by a Flemish orchestra.
The eighth edition of the awards honors movie music theatrically released between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008.
Wow! Some pretty big names have been nominated for these awards. Thomas Newman definitely deserves his nomination, as his score for WALL-E was, I think, by far the best soundtrack of a film all year. A big congratulations to him for the nomination!
I haven’t heard of these awards either, miafka, but thanks for telling us about it.
I’ve seen most of these films mentioned. They were all big hits with the arts and critics crowd. But weren’t they released late last year? I guess the cutoff for this award is sooner than the others. Expect some really fine films to be released between now and Xmas, providing stiff competition early next year.
When I first saw WALL-E, I thought the music was one of the few weaknesses. And I still think so, because the movie is so good , it’s hard to measure up to it. The Peter Gabriel track isn’t that good, the best part being the Soweto Choir towards the end. However, about 6-10 tunes are very good in the soundtrack, and I sure glad Newman is getting some recognition.
btw, Stanton talked quite a bit about his interaction with the composer in some interview posted elsewhere here…
I have never heard of this award, either… But of course I hope Thomas Newman wins. I don’t think this is an overall strong soundtrack like Ratatouille, but it is still very, very good. I didn’t like the “Down to Earth” song at the end, as it reminded me of something Dreamworks would have done, but I must say it’s a grower. There are some amazing tracks, like “2815AD” and “Define Dancing” but also some weaker ones, but that’s not to say they aren’t good, too. But in the end it doesn’t really matter what other people think, as it’s a subjective thing but if he wins this award of course I’ll be pleased.
Just goes to show how marketing can control people. There are at least 6 tracks from Newman in Wall-e that far exceeded ‘Down to Earth’, but unfortunately some are are only a minute long or less… more like a blurb than a real song. I have never heard Gabriel’s tune on the radio, except at a Drive-In movie, where it’s pumped thru the FM.
I wonder how many of the voters had actually heard the nominee soundtracks at least 3 times? As for me, can’t say that I’ve heard most of them more than once, and only during the movie, which is kinda a distraction.
