I didn’t really know
where to put this, so I put it here…Sorry if it’s in the wrong section.
Anyway, basically, I don’t
know if any of you have seen the new wave of trailers that have been released by Sony about their new film,
‘Open Season’, but in one of them, it makes a very big thing about the film having the co-writer of Monsters,
Inc., or something along those lines, if I remember correctly. They filled up the whole screen with the words
‘Monsters, Inc.’, and made a very big thing about it, basically using Pixar’s success to fuel their own
film.
So, I was just wondering, is this common in the movie industry? I mean, the guy they had mentioned
only had a small role in the making of ‘Open Season’, yet they were obviously highlighting it because he helped
with MI, and since anything Pixar has touched turns to gold, Sony are probably hoping the same will happen here.
I mean, is this allowed? Is this common practice?
I think so. Pixar
itself does it all the time, really.
"From the makers of Toy Story, Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo,
it’s the Incredibles!"
See what I mean? I’m not really fussed about it.
But it’s a
different compayn!
That’s completely something else!
Not really. I guess if you have someone who wrote/directed/produced a particular film, then
you are allowed to declare that your film is from the writer(s)/director(s)/producer(s) of the other film. I
always though it was fairly standard practise. It’s how you intice movie-goers to see films, by linking them
with films they’ve already seen.
Hmm, I guess, it’s just that they were using people that had contributed to
Pixar films in a minor way, and that were contributing to this film in a minor way. It just seemed petty to me,
and, as Groaning said- it’s a different company entirely.
The funniest thing I find about the movie industry usually
comes in the winter. The Oscars! I obsess over the Oscars every year, especially if a Pixar film is nominated.
Even if I have never seen any of the nominated films, I’m always following the buzz online. It’s one night of
the year when the best of the best and the most known of the filmmakers of Hollywood can get together and give
awards to itself.
In my humble opinion, I think the makers of Open Season are using Pixar’s fame for
their film. But like I said, it’s typical of the movie industry.
They also say “from the co-director of The Lion King” - it’s common movie practice to try to catch
people’s interest that way, though it doesn’t usually happen in animation…

Actually it happens in animation a lot nowadays.
I think there IS a difference between what
Open Season has done and what PIXAR does before every trailer – one uses their own material and one uses someone
else’s.
PIXAR may say: From the Creators of Toy Story, Monsters, Inc, and Finding
Nemo! But then again, the PIXAR crew hasn’t really changed much, so that’s probably the closest
thing to the truth there is.
As for Open Season, hey, they trying everything they can to get people to
watch – nothing wrong with that. Besides, what there doing is free advertisement for PIXAR and animation in
general. Someone may see that trailer and go, "Hey, I haven’t seen MI in forver! I’m renting that
tonight!"
