Recently there’s been a bit of a growing culture in making sequels to animated films and I don’t know why but this is kind of getting on my nerves. I think a movie has to be truly brilliant to deserve a sequel and sometimes I don’t think it’s worth doing any more when a good, successful film has already been released and done well. I know there are probably many people who disagree with me on this but I even think Shrek went on too long - I truly LOVED the first two but I think they kind of went downhill a bit from there. As for Pixar, they’ve managed to do well with Toy Story and although there are conflicting opinions about cars 2, I’m still really looking forward to it and enjoyed the original a lot.
Anyway, sorry if this started to sound like a bit of a rant and I was just wondering what everyone else was thinking
To paraphrase John Lasseter, if a sequel is warranted- that is, if there’s a genuine story to tell, than I have no issues with it. Toy Story 2 is the classic example.
Then you have Disney’s direct-to-video sequels of the 1990s and early 2000s which make me wonder what Michael Eisner was drinking. Cinderella 2? Lion King 1 1/2? Bambi 2? Sure, they’re not the worst films of all time, but it was plainly a money-grubbing effort at the potential expense of the legacies of some timeless classics. Terminator 3 (in my opinion) is another film of this type. Sometimes, it’s best just to leave it alone.
I think a movie can have a sequel, but only 1 or 2, after that, end it. usually the 3rd movie never work’s out, Toy Story broke that. Shrek the 3ed was bad, but the 4th one was better. Some movie’s like Finding Nemo don’t need a sequel because they don’t need a another one.
An original movie can be good or bad. Same with sequels.
There are a lot of bad ones but there are very famous instance of awesome sequels.
So being a sequel doesn’t automatically makes a film bad.
Well, I don’t really mind sequels just because they’re a sequel. I don’t really care that much, but it seems to get on every one elses nerves a lot.
Ultimately I just put my faith into the production companies to know when it’s worth carrying on with a film and hope that the storylines will suit the characters and not be a re-tweaked version of the original. I suppose the better a film is, the more likely they’re going to make another and the higher the expectations is has to live up to. Bit of a vicious circle really
Some sequels are awesome yet some can also ruin the first installment.
However, there are exceptions - I don’t know if this also goes for videogames, but you can’t tell me that Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest is a bad sequel.
Hmm, not that I think of it, 3/5ths of the movies I saw this year have been some sort of sequel (Fast Five, Pirates IV, The Hangover Part II VS. Rio & Rango)
Oh, yes. Summer is sequel time!
I completely disagree, BAD is a strong word, it was a joy of game, and much more difficult than the first Donkey Kong
He’s saying that you can’t tell him it’s bad. So he’s saying it’s good
Yes, I stand firmly by the belief that Donkey Kong Country 2 is the best game ever created.
I’m a she, though. xD No hard feelings, I don’t appear very girly on the internet.
I am usually very wary of sequels, especially if it was clear that the original movie was not written with one in mind (and then, the villain is brought back to life, the main couple pointlessly breaks up only to get back together again, and some of the actors don’t come back so their character is Put on a Bus). But if a movie was meant to have a sequel, like say, Batman Begins, the sequel can be very good.
I already knew you were a girl. It was my mistake
I’m okay with sequels as long as the animators try to put their heart and soul into making a great story instead of using the exsiting fanbase to make money.
My opinion on sequels is that they shouldn’t make them unless there necessary movies.
(if you know what i mean)
i’m not sure how i feel on a How to train your dragon sequel but if they did a Great job on the first one, i should trust that they will do a good job on a sequel.
Since I only watch animated films and once in a blue moon live-action stuff (though usually it’s only because of a good-looking actress if it’s live-action), I have no problem with sequels, especially since the only companies I watch films from are Disney/Pixar and the rare Dreamworks flick that catches my eye.
Pixar has proven in Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 that they know how to make sequels. Cars 2 is intriguing people to see it who didn’t like or see the first Cars. Also, to speak of a film that hasn’t been released as if it’s bad makes no sense, unless you’re a crew member who is upset about the low wages you will get from a film even if makes a billion in gox-office gross. I remember people giving bad reviews of The Tales of Beedle the Bard before it was published…but seriously, no one had read it up to that point. Saying it’s bad before release only causes you to bite your tongue when it does come out and you end up loving it.
