Oscar: Best Animated Feature

Hmm, I was gonna try and remind everyone that there’s still one major contestor to Ratatouille: Persepolis, the French Movie set during the background of the Iranian Revolution. From what I read, it has received very high reviews, it won that gong at the Cannes film festival and, considering the way politics is flowing these days, it could usurp Ratatouille for being about the right subject - An Inconvenient Truth syndrome, really.

Fortunately, this is all a moot point, as according to this article, Persepolis has not been nominated for Best Animated Film. It has been instead nominated for Best Foreign Language film. Why they didn’t nominate it, I don’t know, because it looks like it furthers the cause of animation as a medium for all ages, as well as being thought provoking, but it’s certainly good news for Ratatouille. That leaves the only contender to be Paprika - if it’s eligible - with the Simpsons being the third nominee. If we get to four and five, it will probably be Surf’s Up and either Meet the Robinsons or Shrek 3. If Paprika’s not eligible, it will probably be replaced with Bee Movie.

Apologies for the Necro, but I thought this news would be relevant.

A friend of mine who knows about these things explained it to me. He told me that it’s purely a production-money thing, and therefore depends on the funding source. If the movie was funded by a non-American studio, then the only category it can go into is Best Foreign Film. Only the US-studio-funded movies can go into the other categories (editing, acting, whatever). Hope this helps.

…oh, and thanks SO MUCH for the heads-up about Persepolis! I’ll have to watch it! I didn’t even know it existed. looks at IMdB Thanks again!

Hmm, Persepolis. Sounds cool, especially since I’ve been to the ruins of it once.
sheila

I do not think that is entirely correct.
For example, “The Triplets of Belleville” (which was a purely non-US production) was nominated for Best Animated Feature, Best Song and Best Music.

yes, non-american films can be aligible in any other category. Also Persepolis may be nominated for best foreign language film and best animated feature… even best picture of the year…

Here’s my take:

Best Picture - Rat doesn;t stand much of a chance to be nominated in this category unfortunately against the critics’ favorites. And the bias against animated films means it won’t stand a chance at all of winning. :frowning:
Best Score - I really hope it wins…Micheal Giacchino’s work in this movie was brilliant.
Best Original Song - For “Le Festin”? Its a great song, but again again competition will be quite keen in this area.
Best Animated Picture - Possibly the award that it has the most chance to win…though it faces strong competition from the likes of Shrek 3, Persepolis, Surf’s Up, Simpsons Movie (if their nominated).

I haven’t seen Persepolis and Surf’s Up, yet, but judging from the reviews both have a really good chance of being nominated, as has the Simpsons Movie (which was awesome).
I would forget about Shrek 3, though. Nevermind its financial success, I think it is mediocre at best and no match for its predecessors, let alone Ratatouille.

Today the academy released the shortlist for the animated picture category:

Ratatouille
Alvin & the Chipmunks
Aqua Teen
Bee Movie
Beowulf
Meet the Robinsons
Persepolis
Shrek the Third
The Simpsons Movie
Surf’s Up
Tekkonkinkreet
TMNT

So there’ll be only 3 nominated pictures.
Saluti

Whoa, Tekkonkinkreet made it on and Paprika didn’t! Surprising. I mean both were good, but I definitely expected to see Paprika on there.
And Beowulf and Shrek reeeeally don’t need to be on there, IMO.

They must have been running really short of nominees if Shrek the Third, Bee Movie, and Happily N’Ever After were shortlisted… Congrats to Ratatouille, though!

Happily N’Ever After is on there? You’ve gotta be kidding me…

Oh well. Congratulations to Ratatouille/Pixar, in any case! It’s no surprise that it made it onto the list.

How the heck does Beowulf count? It’s pretty much all motion capture/rotoscoped humans and they banned all that. Robinsons better make the final list dangit. wants a shaking fist smiley and just for the heck of it, this one added as well

Edited for language. – Mitch

You’re right dear!
Furthermore two entries in the shortlist are under scrutiny for possible violations of acad rules. They are: Alvin (too much live action footage) and Beowulf (too much mocap) . Only time will tell, anyway the only frontrunner is Ratatouille and that’s good.
saluti

Man, how can Alvin and the Chipmunks even make it to the short list?

clabot- Can you explain what front runner means and what that list means and a link to where you found it, in Academy Award terms of course I’m a bit confused.[/b]

Sadly, I beg to differ. I thought Persepolis wasn’t being nominated for some reason, but if it’s a valid nomination, then there could be an upset. It’s an animated film about a Little Girl during the Iranian Revolution, and has been very highly reviewed so far. It looks like we could have a two-horse race, and if politics swing that way, Persepolis could take it…

Martini, front runner means favourite to win it.

I’ve seen only small clips of Persepolis though I read the graphic novel. For what I know is very good picture and deserves a nomination at least. The problem is that the producers of the movie are pushing for a Best foreign language nod and that political move could damage their chance for a Best animated pic nomination.

Edited. I added quote tags around the first sentence for clarity. As a side-note, quoting a member’s statement (if the post in question is directly above you) is unnecessary. – Mitch

That’s what bugs me. Why is it political? Shouldn’t it be about better voices, design, story and such?

Well, uh, that’s a mixed bag of nominations, to say the least! :stuck_out_tongue: But hey, congratulations to Ratatouille!

The BAF shortlist is always a mixed bag, because the films on it are not chosen for their quality.
But once they have condensed it down to the three actual nominations, I doubt there will be anything “Happily N’ever after”-ish left…
