I wonder - silly question but, do you think the Pixarians made this guy during production to better see how WALL-E works, as opposed to a maquette? I’ve always figured they just made it to promote the film, but now, I can’t help but wonder …

They might have done, FONY, especially as WALL-E is quite a complicated little character to just visualise, so actually making a model of him would be a big help.
Those are such sweet pictures! I love how he sort of has reflections of stars in his eyes, even though he’s not in space.
I’m pretty sure WALL-E was just made as a promotional item for the movie. I think so because nobody would spend millions to examine a robot, which could change if the script needs to, and couldn’t do half of the things the one in the movie could. I remember reading that it’s part of a plan by the Disney imagineers called the Living Character Initiative which brings your favorite Disney (and Pixar) characters to life.
