Is this true? I read about it on a site, but haven’t seen this info anywhere else. Just want to know if its true or not. Thanks!
Well, I don’t think there’s been any news of it on here, though I couldn’t say for certain. It’d be a pretty big thing if Pixar officially released information about a 2D Pixar studio, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s been a lot of speculation about it. There are other members on here who know more than I do, though.
And welcome to the boards, atomicbetty!
I doubt it.
Can’t really confirm anything, but it would be kinda cool. Pixar’s known for amazing 3-D animation, and it makes me curious of to what they could produce in 2-D… with their kind of storytelling, it would be interesting to see what they could come up with.
This is a debate – or, rather, an idea – that I have been interested in for quite some time, and one that I would love to see evolve into an official, full-fledged proposition. We’ve seen the potential of what Pixar could do with traditional artwork/animation if they used it in its fullest form, and I only wish that they would harness it even more.
I think the basic idea was that Pixar would remain a 3-D studio with Disney pulling the 2-D reigns. It’s obvious that Disney is just now starting to return to their roots via The Princess and the Frog, but, even though it was a decent film on the whole, I think that Disney still has a ways to go before they get their act together and churn out some truly spectacular productions that have both a strong story and memorable characters and moments. What they need are some exceptional directors in there. For now, we’ll have to remain content with what they give us. I really do wish that Pixar would help to revive traditional animation, but I guess they’re relying on Disney to do most of that.
That’s just my two cent’s worth. I have no idea what the future holds for both studios. In all honesty, though, I would love it if Pixar built a 2-D studio alongside their 3-D one.
By the way, welcome to Pixar Planet, atomicbetty!

Mitch pretty much nailed it on the head already… Disney will take the reigns of the 2D animation realm while Pixar steers the 3D. That’s what they do best.
However, I can see more collaboration amongst directors for story development. John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter are geniuses at story and character development, which is the main driver for the success in any film.
Both Disney and Pixar have their art down well, and improving on that drives the story and vice versa. But the three big Pixar directors may hopefully give some more of their influence and involvement in the 2D animation development.
Yeah, I’m glad they’re going back to their old way of doing things. That’s what I was always used to each year when it was Toy Story and Pocahontas or A Bug’s Life and Mulan. It was bugging me for a while that both studios were doing 3D (when Chicken Little came out it really gave the impression of Disney trying to be Pixar).
