Does anyone feel Pixar may have had to change CARS due to the film
being the last in the deal with
Disney and so the theory goes that PIXAR
made CARS to be the last in the 7 movie deal. When PIXAR found out
that
DISNEY might in fact buy the company they convinced DISNEY to make it
a summer movie and make the best
out of that they could. Giving PIXAR
more time to adjust the story etc etc. OR nothing at all.

Hmm, I didnāt think of that. I
honestly thought Pixar needed more time to work on the project. After I saw the movie, I went back and watched
the teaser⦠and I was surprised by the racing sequences. If you look at early trailers (the teaser in
particular) and compare them to the finished product, the latter is about ten times better.
And I SWEAR that music was Green Day. Anyone else
agree?

Couple of things. I donāt think there was any doubt in anybodyās mind that Pixar and Disney were going to
stay together be it through a deal or through a merger. It was just a matter of bringing the write people to the
table. Steve Jobs is among the most shrewd business men on earth and knew from the get go how things were going
down.
Second, if they didnāt get together then that means Pixar would have to go looking for a new
distribution partner. In that case then they certainly wouldnāt want to go into discussions with their first
bad picture ever fresh in memory.
Point is that Pixar wanted this film to succeed and be its best
regardless. As for the move to Summer that was two things - firs a marketing strategy because Summer movies
(like Finding Nemo) make more and get more hype than November movies (every other Pixar film). Second though
(and probably most important) it bought Jobs and Pixar a little time to negotiate with Disney - especially
important since there was no budging until Eiger took over last September.
I also read an article somewhere that one of the reasons behind making
Cars a summer movie had to do with the partnership with NASCAR, and summer is the
peak racing season. NASCAR is winding down by November, when the fall Pixar movies are released, so the studio
wanted to really tap into that particular fan base by releasing the movie when their interest would be at its
greatest.

Yeh, Iād say that was a good decision on Pixarās behalf. Although,
while that helped them domestically, you had the World Cup happening in Europe⦠some people debate that this
event was the reason of it not doing as well as it could outside of North America. Yes, there is no NASCAR, but
Formula 1 is very popular.
Thatās true, but from
what Iāve heard over here (in Europe) is that those who are interested in Formula 1 are taking Cars as a
ājokeā. No idea why- Iām not into Formula 1- but the people Iāve talked to who are, kind of snigger and make
fun of Cars.

Eep! Well, I wonder what Italians will think of the film when itās released in
their country on August 23rd⦠still a while away!
The reason
āCarsā isnāt doing āwellā internationally is because the film didnāt even open in those
markets until July. Money is still rolling in.
Itās way too early to write off āCarsā as a
failure in the foreign markets.
Yeah, it only
came out two days ago here, and Iām not even going to TRY booking tickets, the cinemas are so packed.

Cars
slipped down hear in the UK, then went right back up to 1 again recently.

While that enheartens me, I canāt help but feel Snakes on
a Plane will put a stop to that, what with the hype surrounding it. That said, wouldnāt it be cool if Cars
bounced back again?
Yeah, Snakes On A Plane is number one now in both the UK and the US. Took over a million or something in the UK
in itās first weekend.
Good then Iām not crazy I agree as well
Actually āSnakesā is bound to go down the list pretty soon . . . it BARELY got
number 1 . . . most people feel Box Office wise to be a total let down . . . yet the reviews Iāve heard is that
itās actually a REALLY great movie.
As for Cars, I honestly beleived that their opinion that Cars was a
Summer Movie rang true. Sure, it did buy more time until IGER (lookie, Dash!
) was established, but I do
beleive that PIXAR at that point was pretty gung-ho on the idea of distribution themselves (they considered a few
partners, but I do think prior-merger they were considering going solo. Iāll see if I can find that PIXAR
article.)
Sadly, I think Cars is going to be refered to a bunch of times in a Disney/PIXAR politcal sense,
much like Toy Story 2 . . .
