Pixar Fandom and the Real World

It makes me wonder how us Pixar fanatics relate to the real world and taking our fandom out there.

For example, I got a task a month ago to write 1500 words on 3D Animation. What else to write about expect Pixar? I started out by picking a movie - first one that came to my mind was Toy Story, first feature-length computer animated film. Historic pick, relevant… but I decided not to, because I reckon that would be obviously overdone.

I eventually picked The Incredibles, because it’s the first feature-length computer animated film with an all-human cast. Just banged on about Renderman, Brad Bird’s amazing skill, etc, etc, etc…

Got the assessment back today, and I got 100%! Was able to peek at other students marks (naughty me) and saw that I got the top mark. I guess that’s what you get for writing what you’re passionate about :stuck_out_tongue:

So, uh, yeah, back to my question: your relation to your Pixar fandom and the real world?

That’s cool, Phileas! Well done! You’re right; if you write about something you know and love, you’ll do well.

Saying that, I’m not sure if I’ve ever used my love of Pixar for anything in the ‘real world’…It’s never come up in lessons or anything, aside from when it gets close to Christmas and we just end up watching films which are usually Pixar films instead of actually doing anything. But yeah, I’ll have to think about this one.

In my reading class, we had to write contextual sentences for our vocab words, and they’d be Cars related, only undercover. I wouldn’t come out stating that it was from Cars, but if you were a fan of the movie, you’d see it.

I’m so obsessed over Cars that there will be times where I go places and I think to myself “What would it be like if Lightning and Doc were with me?” Soon, I picture what they’d be doing if they were there.

There will be times I’m listening to music and I think “That song fits Lightning and Sally” or “That fits Doc and Marianne (my original character) breaking up.” It’s so weird.

I would so love to have an assignment that dealt with my favorite movie. I’d get an A+ (then again, I usually do anyways, not to brag.) But it’d be a garaunteed (I know it’s spelled wrong) 100%. I can’t stop watching it!!! Cars is the best movie ever! (With close runner-ups being every Owen Wilson movie ever made and maybe Paul Newman ones too if I can find them.)

I know there are more things that deal with Cars and the real world (which oddly is a title of my one Cars fanfic). It controls my whole life! This was a topic meant for me!

I have tried to fit my passions and current obsessions in with my real life whenever I can. (and it’s true, if the project yer working on is on a topic yer passionate about, chances are you’ll do better with it). This is why I draw so much Pixar stuff. You know, I draw what I like, or what I’m into at the moment. I remember in art class once doing a colored pencil drawing with a Nemo motif. It wasnt really Nemo, but that’s where I got it from. It was really just some generic clownfish in an anemone, but surprise! One of them had a smaller fin

Once I wrote an essay in my English class about John Lasseter. If I remember correctly, I got a 90%. It was a timed write, so it wasn’t 100% legit, but it was still a pretty fun essay to write.

I had a kid come into the shoe shop where I work the other day, and when I asked him what sort of things he’d been up to during the Easter holidays, he mentioned a few things before adding that he’d seen Monsters Vs. Aliens. I asked him if he enjoyed it, and he replied, ‘yeah, it was alright, but not as good as those Pixar films! The Incredibles is my favourite!’ We then had a long and deep discussion about Pixar films, with his mother looking on, bewildered.

Phew, glad I’m not the only person.

Usually whenever I express my fandom is during school projects. This year I have been able to do three projects (I think? ) related to Pixar.

We had to do a report about an invention that we use everyday. So I chose the lamp.

We had to do a project about something that has changed the world overall. I was able to convince my teacher about RenderMan.

And today I recieved an extra credit project in history where we have to create a civilization and give it’s history, over 200 years worth… hey, what’s exagerating nearly 20 years worth of Pixar history for this? :sunglasses:

I’m pretty sure I’ve done countless essays over them too.

[ Oh yeah, and whenever we can bring movies to school… whips out CD case full of movies Muha! ]

And am I the only person who may bore my friends with the countless talk about Pixar and new news from them? I know most of my friends are quick to change the subject once I get rolling. x)

thewisecookiesheet: I bore the crap out of my friends with Cars talk! You’re not alone there!

My friend and I get in some ridiculous Pixar discussions. Onlookers tell us to stop watching “third grade stuff”.

I wear a blue TI logo wristband almost everyday. I rock a TI wallet too. (My mom hates that thing. I guess it’s not really tasteful for a 25 year old to walk around with)
I’ll occasionally wear my TI hockey jersey around the house because it’s heavy and warm. I had shrinky dink phone charm dangles of the TI logo and a Vi logo (like my icon) on my samsung instinct, but they broke. :frowning: I might make myself a new set this summer.
I keep a copy of the letter Brad Bird wrote me in my sketchbook for encouragement. Other than that, I keep the rest of my collection at home.

Seriously. This was one of my test questions on my take home test today.

I chose letter A.

Haha, that’s so cool, thewisecookiesheet! Lucky that it’s the right answer!

Happens to me too, except my counterparts arn’t as keen as me.

I get weird looks when I watch TS2 on the bus. But I don’t really care :stuck_out_tongue:

I used to wear at least 1 TI shirt once a week. Now, I just express my fandom only though my fanfics and music videos.

I do remember in my junior year of High school that I did a stats project on earnings of the TI movie while it was still in theatres.

lizardgirl: Seriously? Awesome.

Okay, I promise that I don’t just sit around and look for Pixar related stuff.

But I’d never seen a Dinoco before.

(Okay, now that I am able to look at them on a computer screen, they look like they were edited on Photoshop or something, but I promise, they weren’t. I don’t even know anyone who has photoshop or any other brilliant photo/graphic editor)

Dinoco is a fictional oil company that first appeared in Toy Story as a small gas station and later had a bigger role in Cars, and made a small cameo in WALL-E.[1]. The company’s logo is a dinosaur (a reference to Sinclair Oil, which uses a similar dinosaur logo, given the fossil fuel nature of oil).

If it isn’t photoshopped, then all I have to say is, “WOW!!!” I wanna go to that gas station!

LightningAndDoc: I promise you, it’s not.

Something similar happened to me when I was driving to state finals for odyssey of the mind.

We were out in the middle of nowhere , pretty much nothing for miles, but farms and such…

We come to this small town and I see a few shops…

One was a gas station, the other a tire shop, and another a place called “The Cozy Motel”

My sister and I being big pixar fans automatically thought about the movie cars!

And we thought it was ironic that all those shops were in cars! especially the “Cozy Motel” , its no Cozy Cone, but its close enough!

And we were in a mini van like the cars that came to Radiator Springs to ask for directions…

So we joked we were stuck in Radiator Springs…

The only thing that would’ve made it better was Dinoco! lol…kinda pointless rambling, but still… :open_mouth:

So thats a real gas station huh? Hmm, that is cool.

Dinoco! How fun is that? I wanna see that in person!
