I’m not sure if this is the right forum to put this in, so Mods, feel free to move it if necessary
I just received an e-mail that Pixar passed on my application for Graphic Artist. Here it is:
"Dear Brent Parker
Thank you for forwarding your resume and portfolio regarding a position with
Pixar. We had your work reviewed and while everyone was impressed with your
work, we are unable to utilize your skill set at this time.
We appreciate your interest in Pixar and wish you every success in the future!
Take Care,
The Recruiting Team
Thanks,
Pixar Recruiting"
I’m just curious if this is a form letter, and they say that “impressed with your work” bit to everyone, or if someone at Pixar who had seen my work actually wrote that, which I would consider cause for celebration .
Naturally, I’m a bit disappointed, but I’m still glad to know.
In the meantime, I got in contact with a local movie poster designer who used to be really big (the guy who referred me to him called him “the rockstar of illustrators”) who said he’ll see if he can find me some connections in the business .
animagusurreal- Aww, sorry they passed you up. But well done for having the guts to give it a go, and a big congratulations that they were impressed with your work! That is a real compliment coming from Pixar! And having connections in the business is probably one of the best ways to get known, so you’re doing all the right things!
When I applied to Pixar in July of 2006, I received my rejection email from an identified recruiter, but only because I have a connection.
It’s difficult to determine whether or not yours was sent by a PRbot, though. Publicity tends to respond via PRbots due to the studio’s incredibly busy schedule. Recruiting might be a different story, but who knows?
In any case, good luck finding work in the industry, animagusurreal.
Ha. That’d be funny if you – “you” being no one in particular – were rejected by Pixar, kept the letters of rejection, succeeded in acquiring a position at the studio some years later, and showed some high authority personnel the letters, going, “Remember these?! It looks like I got here after all, didn’t I?”
I’d like to think that, but they had the position on the “Jobs” section of their website, so I think they must have hired someone. However, I imagine there were thousands of applicants and only one position.
On saving the rejection letter: I imagine it going into the photos section of my autobiography when I’m rich and famous .
Mitch’s idea sounds like fun, too, though .
My mother e-mailed me this:
"Bad Pixar…bad, for not hiring you. Just think, they could have had you, but later on they won’t be able to afford you! : )
Love, Mom"
They say right on their website that some of their current employees had to apply multiple times before getting hired, and that “timing is everything.” I’ll definitely try again.
Dunno if I ever told this story on here, from when I went to mail the application:
(quoted from my MySpace journal)
“When I was in line at the Post Office, waiting to mail it, I overheard someone in line behind me reading the ‘Cars’ storybook ‘Mater and the Ghost Light’ aloud to her kids. Because of the Pixar coincidence, I told her what I was there to mail, and she mentioned that her husband works at Cafe FX, a local CGI effects company (‘Sin City’, ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, ‘Spy Kids 2’, etc.) and that her kids were well-versed in Pixar films (‘Ghostlight!’ said her young son.)”
PV: Yeah I suppose I shouldn’t but I must say it’s a real smack in the face. At least I should keep in mind that I have to try my best and keep striving to be better. I guess I never realized how hard it could be to get a job there.
Aww that’s too bad they didnt need a graphic designer. But hey, you got farther along toward that goal than I will in a long long time! I would most certainly try again in the future though. They may eventually need a graphic designer.
That’s too bad, dude. Hey, at least they said they were impressed with your work. Not many people out there can claim Pixar themselves were impressed with his/her skills. Good luck in the future…
