My break was good. My true big break (literally and figuratively) will be this summer.
So, about DreamWorks. Out of the ones I’ve seen, I actually like Shrek 1 & 2 pretty equally, so one of them might be my favorite. I’m surprised by how many people really hate Shrek the Third. I guess I thought it was okay, but nothing like the first two, and I still haven’t seen Shrek Forever After.
I also like The Prince of Egypt and Kung Fu Panda. Personally, I’m fine with Madagascar 1 & 2. There are certainly parts I like and can laugh at, even if the humor doesn’t always make sense. I haven’t seen the 3rd one but I have been really interested in seeing how it ends, and after hearing so many positive reviews, I think I will at some point.
Least favorites? Well, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to appreciate Antz for obvious reasons (see A Bug’s Life), and I’m not a Shark Tale fan either. I honestly don’t know why I ever decided to see either of them. As for Shark Tale, I think I just liked the songs at first, but I was a kid at the time.
I still haven’t seen How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda 2, or Rise of the Guardians to name a few. Those are the ones I would really love to see in particular. In fact, I’ve never actually heard of anyone who didn’t like Kung Fu Panda 1 or 2 or How to Train Your Dragon, so that makes me feel a lot better.
You NEED to see Kung Fu Panda 2! I sat in the cinema crying my eyes out in that film. Antz… Not a fan. Another good animation studio is Blue Sky Studios, You know, Ice Age series and Rio? The Ice age series is fantastic and my favorite is probably the third one, Dawn of the Dinosaurs. I have to say, I prefer Blue Sky to Dreamworks.
Oh, yes! I also enjoy the Blue Sky movies. I suppose their quality of work has been more consistent than DreamWorks even though I feel their output has been pretty solid for a while now. I particularly like the first Ice Age, maybe more than the sequels, but I thought those were fun, too. I’ll admit, I was confused as to why there were dinosaurs in the 3rd film if there were humans in the first one, but that didn’t end up being too important in the end and I enjoy them. The only ones I have not seen are Rio and the last Ice Age film. I’d like to see both; in fact, I have a list of films I really need to catch up on at least by this summer.
So I had to look up what movies were dreamworks vs various other companies (I have all the Pixar movies memorized and pretty much know all the Disney movies, other than that I can never keep the other strait)
But I liked Shrek 1 way back when it came out, I never saw the others though
I also never saw Shark Tail, How To Train Your Dragon, and Kung Fu Panda
I saw Rise of the Guardians though (I love al(most) all Christmas movies) and it was good, my friend liked how Santa was all tough
One of my favorite non Disney or Pixar movies though, and I don’t know who made it, is Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmeron, I don’t know if I love that movie because its got wild Mustangs, it’s out west (I love the west) or because of the part where Spirit and the Native American (I can’t think of his name right now) escape from the cavalry camp (I’ve watched enough westerns with my grandparents and know enough history to get seriously annoyed with the cavelry sometimes). But I love that movie
I also saw the first Ice Age movie (that was forever ago!) and the most recent ice age movie, their pretty good I guess, but my favorite movies are still Pixar coughCarscough and Disney
sallyandStickers, Spirit is one of my favorite films, and sadly, its made by Dreamworks. The native American, his name is Little Creek. Its a beautiful film. Also, you haven’t seen Shark Tale? YOU LUCKY PERSON, you ain’t missing out on anything. And yeah, Ice Age 4 is probably my least favorite of the series, the pirate thing seems a little… Out of place.
I cannot second this enough! I was lucky enough to attend the Australian premiere and stand a feet away from Lucy Liu being interviewed without realising it! And yes, I teared up too, at the “abandonment” scene.
Ice Age 4 was kinda meh, but I wouldn’t mind watching it again for the villain being voiced by that Game Of Thrones guy. Rio’s the one you must check out - it’s truly a feel-good film!
I have good memories of Shark Tail cos’ I saw it in cinemas with my siblings. I remember my brother would always quote “I’m Sebastian, the whale-washing dolphin” from Jack Black’s character, and I loved the relationship between Will Smith and Renee Zellwegger’s characters. I’m not sure if it’ll stand the test of time if I watch it now as a grown-up, though.
HTTYD and KFP, on the other hand… hohoho, now those are must-watches!
I second you and sally&Stickers with regards to Spirit. Oh, how I wish it was released on Blu-Ray! I also wish I had seen it in cinemas as a kid. It was one of my favourite films from my childhood because the scope of the adventure was so EPIC - across the entire Wild West, unlike, say, Toy Story, which took place in two houses and a street, or Rio, which took place in one city (two if you count the beginning).
Blue Sky has good stuff. Personally, I think their best movie is Robots (then, those who know me know I like robots ).
But Ice-Age 1 wasn’t bad. Ice-Age 2 was okay. Ice-Age 3 was pretty good (they played us that on gradnight when i graduated from school i think). I’ve yet to see Ice-Age 4.
Never seen Rio either.
thedriveintheatre, thats the scene I cried in too! Lucy Liu does a really good job with Viper. My favorite quote from Viper is in KFP2 when she says, “Po’s having Daddy issues” Makes my laugh every time. S 330, Robots is a Blue Sky Studios production? No wonder I love it.
Argh, go see it pronto! And yeah, Robots was pretty good when I watched it as a kid. I saw bits and pieces on free-to-air a year or two ago in Sydney. I feel like rewatching it, maybe as a double feature with Cars because they share a lot of similarities in world-building.
Wow, how does it feel like to listen to the music out of context? And yes, do get to watch it. The only qualm I had was that much of the film takes place in one city, like Rio, but the incredible story and diabolical (not to mention sympathetic) villain more than made up for it! I recently rewatched it while editing a mash-up trailer (which sadly has gone into hiatus).
Oh man, when the drums came in at 2:20 of “Po Finds The Truth”, I had goosebumps and spinetingles all over! And then the world got all misty when he has the flashback of his life and all the love he’s received from his friends and family, despite the atrocities committed in his childhood. It is probably one of the deepest and moving scenes in the entire Dreamworks canon.
I love how Viper is so kind and friendly, unlike most portrayals of snakes in films and cartoons which depict them as sneaky (Kaa), devious (Sir Hiss), or just plain bad (Rattlesnake Jake). Her “big sister” relationship with Po is adorable to watch. Some people ship them, and I can believe in that too, but I think the writers are trying to pair Po with Tigress more.
So Pixarteers: any of you want to be an animator? Maybe a screenplay writer or just work for a movie studio? Animation or live-action? I can certainly tell you that I hope to work at a studio like ahem Pixar (top pick), even if it meant I was just a janitor or something.
Ive considered animator or modeler but im thinking twice about that. Scriptwriter would be nice. Of course, i’ll have to work on it.
Score composer is another one.
Its my ambition! I would really like to be either an Animator, or work somewhere in the Art Department. Its basically my biggest dream… I hope it comes true
