I keep seeing people say that Cars is the weakest of Pixar’s films. And yet, there is no Pisar film that teachers more life lessons than Cars.
I personally would love to watch Planes if there was no comment about it being aimed at a younger audience, because that sounds like the target audience is three year olds…
I understand and to an extent agree with this. On the other hand, is it any different than plushies and a thousand other merchandise tie-ins? Any income feeds the hole and gives Disney/Pixar more flexibility to do other (probably better) things. At the very least, Planes will probably keep DisneyToon folks gainfully employed. By extension, the moneygrubbing makes it easier for WDAS and Pixar to remain staffed with the best talents.
Looking at the big picture of how Disney and Pixar are organized, an interesting question might be how things shake out in the future. Right now, it looks something like this:
Pixar: features, in house.
WDAS: features and shorts, in house.
Pixar Canada: shorts, in house but foreign tax-advantaged.
DisneyToon: direct-to-video features, foreign/outsourced.
It’s a fair guess that of all these, DisneyToon spends the least per frame of output and makes the most back. So without something like Planes in the pipeline, one of the other units might have to take a downsizing hit or even be re-purposed. Time will tell as global financial conditions evolve, especially with a potential game-changer in the mix like Illumination’s business approach on Despicable Me–it’s highly likely that the approach was noted with great interest. Meanwhile, Planes by DisneyToon looks like a smart business move that only bends or fractures (ie., does not totally shatter) notions of quality associated with Disney/Pixar.
Cars haters will increase with “planes”, but I just don’t care what they think, I am so excited to explore the Planes world this 2013, and I am gonna be catching its blu-ray the day it comes out
That’s a good response for haters of Cars: the movie’s straight to DVD, so don’t complain because you don’t have to sit through its trailers in a theatre.
Yeah, I don’t mind it as much since it’s going straight to DVD. I still think it sounds pretty lame but I’ve got to hand it to Pixar that it’s a smart idea because I know regardless of how bad it is I will still end up renting it to see it!
