Planes

I’m looking forward to seeing Planes. Maybe it’ll be bad, but you never know!
Honestly, I’m willing to give pretty much any story set in the Cars universe a chance. It’s such an interesting world.

I’m glad that Pixar isn’t involved with this movie. Air Mater I think is a little preview of what to expect in this.

I think I am too. If Pixar did another Cars movie at this point, I think a lot of people would hate Pixar.

I hope some of the Cars characters will appear in Planes. That would be nice.

Yeah, it’s not going to hurt Pixar’s track record since it isn’t not made by them. Althought it probably wouldn’t since it’s a direct-to instead of a theatrical release. Disney could possibly milk the series if they want to without Pixar’s brand name. Can’t really see any Cars characters appearing in this film since it’s mainly about Planes. It would be cool to see one of the Cars characters like Mater or such.

I was listening to one of the audio commentary for an episode of the recently released Simpsons Season 14 DVD, and Stacy Keach was apart of it and he talked a little bit about Planes. He said it was a Pixar production (I know, I know. But those are his words.) and he will be playing a weathered 1940’s Navy Corsair named Skipper, who’s training Jon Cryer, who will play a crop duster, to win a race around the world.

Planes 2 is in the works

Looks like this could be the new ‘tinkerbell’ for Disney.

Wow there’s already a sequel for this? What’s next? Trains, Boats, tanks, motorcycles, submarines?

Trains & Automobiles

But, but the first one has yet to come out!

And then comes the prequel: Horses and Carts.

Hahahah niiice.

Agreed, and glad to see it unfold that way. Prana Animation Studios in India have handled the animation for Tinkerbell and reportedly are continuing with Planes as Tinkerbell winds down (Secret of the Wings is supposedly the last Tink entry).

The work on Tinkerbell has been uniformly good, much better than the DisneyToons sequels from the mid-90s to mid-00s. Planes, plus any other Cars spinoffs (or sequels, Cars 3 and beyond included!) are a great fit for the DisneyToons/Prana partnership.

I heard a rumor that this might be released theatrically internationally. Hopefully not.

It might work out well if Planes gets a limited theatrical release, maybe at the El Capitan as TinkerBell reportedly did. Whatever entries in the Vehicles franchise DisneyToons/Prana might produce, the quality is sufficient that moviegoing audiences could fairly decide whether or not theatrical releases would be a good move on Disney’s part. The budget-to-box-office ratio would probably make sense, as would the franchises’s complete move away from Pixar…other than Pixar Canada’s Cars shorts. If there’s ever going to be a Cars 3, here’s a vote for it to be produced by DisneyToons/Prana and be released in theaters.

Meanwhile, glad the DisneyToons and Prana folks will continue to be gainfully employed by Planes and any sequels thereto…

I’ve been hoping this would somehow be a Pixar film ever since I saw it first labeled as “Disney’s Planes”, mostly because I first heard about it in a photo recap of last year’s D23 convention when they were talking about Pixar’s upcoming films. I guess I’ve just always had this fear of Pixar letting Disney do something with their stuff (remember when Disney and Pixar were going to split and Disney had plans to make direct-to-video sequels of Pixar’s films? That would’ve been so sad  ). But I think I’m OK with it now, whatever happens because I remembered that Disney had done a direct-to-video spinoff of one of Pixar’s films before – Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, and I enjoyed it and the TV series that followed. Honestly, I think Planes looks awesome no matter who’s “at the wheel”. And besides; John Lasseter’s likely to executive produce it, and I think if that’s the case, I’ll definitely definitely be buying it when it gets released!

 Yeah, I also think Planes will be great. My dad is excited about it since he’s always been a plane fanatic. I’m sure it will be great and I like how it has a few tie-ins with the Cars Toon: Air Mater. Who knows? Maybe, just maybe, the Cars will show up even!

I’m glad to see an optimistic comment!

Looking back at all the comments on this topic, it’s a surprise that no one (I include myself) has mentioned Jay Jay the Jet Plane…with singing planes!

Jay Jay first aired in the late 90s. Like Planes, it includes a skywriting prop-plane (Snuffy) among jets. But with Jay Jay as a benchmark, it’s easy to imagine that Disney’s Planes will veer more toward content that adults can appreciate. And clearly the animation will be of higher quality.

If you can sit through Jay Jay, Planes is a lock for you!

Ugh… I vaguely remember JayJay… that face of his is just creepy.
I love how Pixar gives personality to vehicles; I mean, there have been a number of cartoons or movies about living cars and planes, but nothing was really good until Cars. So I’m excited they’re doing something with Planes, so when you imagine a airplane with personality, you see Dusty (I hope that’s his name… I heard about it somewhere…), not JayJay :stuck_out_tongue:

OWP: Yes, Dusty is the skywriting prop-plane’s name–he’s voiced by Jon Cryer. Sorry about the creepy face of Jay Jay…here’s an antidote–something cute aimed at an older age group, plus a nod to Tex Avery:

It looks like Klay Hall is the director of Planes. He directed TinkerBell and the Lost Treasure, which was worthwhile, and supervised a bunch of King of the Hill episodes. That bodes well for Planes. Also, it looks like DisneyToon plans to continue both TinkerBell and Planes installments. Sounds like a smart move!
