Some of you may have noticed that I’ve gotten fed up with YouTube’s constant deleting. At first I thought they only removed uploaded full movies or free music downloads, or just the videos that didn’t credit the copyright owners. Boy, was I wrong. I’ll bet they don’t even watch the videos or read the description, or even consider giving the video a chance.
Don’t get me wrong, I respect their authority. After all, without them keeping control, YouTube would go whacko with unneeded disrespectful videos. BUT most the videos they deleted weren’t like that. I’ve visited several user profiles, and each user was a dedicated music video maker who makes them out of love, not greed, and had a certain (sad) story behind them. Like, for example, there was this girl who dedicated this awesome music video (not the full music, so I don’t think anyone would even try downloading it illegally) that was dedicated in memory of her mother, who had passed away. Yet, now her videos have all been removed and her account deleted after that. How sad is that?
I mean, I understand doing away with YouTube poop (ew), but the videos that are threatened by YouTube’s power are NOT that at all.
So, I thought, someone should do something about this! Someone’s gotta take a stand! cue Mulan’s decision’s theme That’s when I got ready to go to petittionspot.com to find if anyone agrees with me.
Don’t worry about the info they’re asking of you- you just need to make up a name to sign it as, and as for the zip code, I never put in my real one anyway, and I can go ahead just fine.
I’m gonna need all the support I can get. Spread the word!
I wonder why some companies don’t allow their stuff on Youtube…It’s free advertising, in my eyes. But whatever…I signed the petition. Youtube needs to get their act together.
It really is free advertising - I’ve become more familiar with bands and songs that I never knew until I came across it on a fanmade video. I’ve grown to love some of the bands so much that, I would pay to see them in concert if the chance came up. So … in the end, it pays off. If not in money, then in popularity.
I signed it. I support the decision all the way!!! I want to post up a music vid someday soon, and if YouTube doesn’t stop this crap, how else am I going to share it with the rest of you???
Yeah, Youtube has no idea what they’re missing out on. It is the largest and most popular video-sharing website on the Internet, and they’ve already realised the potential of ad-generated content (like those annoying banner ads and ‘Featured Partner Videos’ they keep pushing in the sidebars). This is a whole land of unexplored possibilities of fan-made dedications! Why hire people to do the advertising for you when rabid fans do the job for you F.O.C.? Sadly, they have yet to mine this goldfield of opportunity and just take an all-or-nothing approach to destroying creativity and innovation.
Although this hasn’t happened to me (yet)), I have noticed some of my Favourited vids have been removed or their user suspended, and it’s getting frustrating when I have no other means to watch their awesome works again (which is why I now plan to download as many of my favourite fan vids as possible before they get ‘terminated’ too!) Yes, we know the content is not ours, that’s why we put disclaimers in our vids (in my case, I take care to mention the music video has been “edited” by thedriveintheatre). We are merely making tributes to our most favourite movies and TV shows, and if you can’t live with that, then you’re missing out on a huge market of your consumers, and will lose out to more ‘open-minded’ competitors. I’m already getting messages from my Subscriptions saying that they’re migrating to other video-sharing sites, and it’s really, really annoying.
Evolve or die, YT! (I sincerely wish the latter doesn’t happen to you)
Recently, someone’s video that was a reflection of all of Walt Disney’s Classics (geez, how can THAT offend the copyright owners?! I doubt the copyright owners know about this) was DELETED. And his/her account SUSPENDED. For that!? YouTube, you’ve got to be kidding me! IT WAS A TRIBUTE TO WALT DISNEY!!! That was beyond the last straw.
Thank you to all who signed it! Every signature counts! Your support means a lot! I’m liking the progress so far. I still have a long way to go, but, well, this wasn’t gonna be completed overnight. I bet if I wait some time longer, there’d be a lot of people who agree.
Keep in mind that YouTube is currently going through an expensive court battle with Viacom regarding hosting copyrighted content. Under such circumstances, if they err, they will understandably err on the side of being safe.
Remember – if a copyright holder files a claim against a video hosted by YouTube, YouTube is required by law to take the video down immediately, no questions asked. The burdon is then up to the person who posted to video to file a counterclaim saying that the video does not violate copyright law. That is what helps protect hosting providers. And copyright patrols like ASCAP are known for sending agents into restaurants, searching for places that use music in unauthorized manners without paying the fee. They’re pretty bloodthirsty.
Don’t blame YouTube for this. They’re dodging bullets left and right in an attempt to avoid getting sued into oblivion.
I SO signed (As Rachel John, however John isn’t my last name. I didn’t want to post that so I made up a fake, common last name). A lot of my favorite videos (most notably CGI’s, you rock girl!) have been removed. What, I ask you, do the copyright holders have to gain? Nothing! If anything, they would like to see them up there for praise and free advertising of their product.
I dont wanna bring people down by telling the truth about these online petitions, but I’ll sign it if it will make you happy, since I do agree with yer point.
Yeah…no. These online petitions rarely if ever generate any kind of change or that much attention. I’m not saying “Yes, it’s totally 100% chance of failure” but I wouldnt get yer hopes up.
They too have deleted videos from my other accounts, like 50% of them, really ticked me off. And what they did to that girl was really mean.
Stupid YOUTUBE thinks they’re all cool because they can be indifferent and mean and not give a crap about the videos and delete them ALL THEY WANT.
But you know we can’t stop them without doing something that goes against their stupid bs rules, right?
Which is what I hate about them. Yet I still go there every day…
Kyr: I know that not all the videos can be kept up because of the copyright claims, which is why I included “as long as they don’t offend the copyright owners” to the words of the petition. If the copyright owners are not offended by the video, then there should be no reason to take it off, right? A lot of my favorites that were deleted were not because of a copyright claim but because YouTube just did it.
Besides, I wonder if the copyright owners actually saw the fanmade videos…they should be flattered by the fanwork, really. I very very very highly doubt that it was Disney that wanted the Walt Disney tributes removed. Or Pixar that wanted the EVE tribute I saw removed.
I signed the petition. (My first name’s real, but the last name’s not.) Youtube is getting retarded. I already had four videos deleted and my most popular one muted.
I just signed the petiton under the made up name Lily Taylor, even though none of my videos and of my favorites were deleted. My brother signed, too, under the name Guybrush Threepwood. His video with scenes from March of the Penguins was deleted, whcih he didn’t like (it was his favorite of the ones he made).
Disney is known for being very strict about it’s copyrights. They’re the company that goes after pre-schools for having Mickey Mouse on their wall. Granted, this policy may have changed since Iger took over, but I highly doubt it. They’re very protective of their copyrights.
Most of my favorites were removed “due to terms of use violation”. They’re aiming for almost anything now…even if it was a video that DISNEY THEMSELVES made and don’t show ANYWHERE ELSE online or on TV (take for example, old episodes of House of Mouse) and putting it up on YouTube provides FREE ADVERTISING AND/OR will do the copyright owners some GOOD.
I’m worried now, seriously. Remember that girl I mentioned in the first post here? She made this beautiful, emotional video with rare music (that means it’s hard to find to buy for yourself on a CD, if it’s music YT’s worried about) and it used Disney and other copyrighted clips in a way that made people appreciate Disney and other movies (so, again, mindless, heartless deleting.) and it was removed. Twice. Without consideration. And her account. Removed. Twice. All her comments, favorites, videos, friends, suscribers…she has to start all over again. It’s tragic. And worst of worst, that deleting must have really hurt her because it was dedicated to her mother, who died, as I’ve mentioned before. And she just wanted to show her dedication to everyone.
And don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not picking her to feel sorry for out of all the many, many people who faced the same thing. Many many people have suffered the same thing. I’m also worried that they’ll remove the Disney videos that DISNEY DOESN’T SHOW ANYMORE ANYWHERE ELSE. What, am I supposed to believe that Disney WANTS the rest of their hard work in the past forgotten by their old fans?
There’s gotta be more supporters than this out there!
bright dot-dasher - I signed the petition. Thank you for giving birth to it in the first place. It never ceases to astound me how many companies will sacrifice their moral and ethical values in order to save their own skins…
