It’s a really good movie.

YAAAY~!

I’ve been waiting so long for this release.

Y’know, they showed a screening of this movie at a film festival in Venice while I was visiting my father (he’s stationed at an air force base in Aviano, Italy). Too bad I don’t understand Italian or I could’ve gone to see it…gosh, I was so disappointed when I couldn’t go. I love Studio Ghibli films so much.

I can’t wait to see this one!

Ooh and on my birthday too!

Is it going to be a limited release?

I really loved this movie. It’s just like Hayao’s other stories, in terms of oddity and unusualness. :stuck_out_tongue: Ponyo is a really lovable character.

The DVD release date of Ponyo (in Japan) will be July 3rd, 2009.

The DVD will be Region 2 (though many DVD players are hackable to play discs from different regions), and will include English subtitles.

If you wish, you can order it from places like Amazon Japan (which has an English side) or CDJapan, and I’m sure you’ll be able to find it from many other places.

The movie (dubbed in English) will be in the US on August 14th, 2009. As of now it’s just slated for an English dub, but in the past, there’s usually a couple screenings of the Japanese-language original (with English subtitles) in large cities (LA, NY) – though even if this is the case, most of the showings will be in English.

No date yet for the North American (Region 1) DVD release. Probably something like spring 2010 from past experience, but that’s just a guess.

I was considering entering that contest at GhibliWorld but then the 12 hour feature didn’t have English subtitles…
So I will excitedly wait until they release that here, too!

Trailer for Ponyo is due in theaters July 4th.

Ponyo will open on 800 screens in the US.
From Frank Marshall’s (producer of the English dub) twitter account today:

"Good news for PONYO, will be opening on 800 screens in August, by far the biggest opening for a Miyazaki film…"

800 only? :frowning: And that’s the biggest opening for a Miyazaki film? I’d thought it deserve better by now…
Oh well, better than nothing. Thanks for the info, joehisa!

Does anyone know if there will be any subtitled prints in the US (as were available in some markets for Mononoke Hime’s US release)?

I’m not quite sure, doctorossi. Maybe anyone else who does could enlighten us?

Anyway, the English trailer has just been released! It lacks the charm and quirkiness of the original Japanese trailer, but makes up for it in the epic ochestral music and ‘cymbal sound effects’.

As much as I like the original dub, I’m intrigued as to how the English-speaking cast would hold up to their Japanese counterparts. A couple of my favourite actors are there (such as Liam Neeson and Cate Blanchett as Ponyo’s parents, and Matt Damon and TIna Fey as Sosuke’s) while the pre-teen crowd would probably delight in knowing two stars from the Cyrus and Jonas families would be voicing the titular Ponyo and Sosuke respectively.

I liked how they played the theme song at the end, and I was positively beaming when Big Narrator Voice declared Mr Miyazaki as “one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.” So true.

Ponyo U.S. Trailer

Here’s to Ponyo making a splash on August 14.

I’m more worried about the translation then the actors. I saw Spirited Away and they wrote in many jokes and were insanely inappropriate in regards to the mood. It’s so aggravating that they think they have to “improve” foreign movies instead of keeping them faithful. (The worst offender I’ve ever seen of this is Doogal actually. Not a Ghibli film, but worth a watch if you want to become enraged at stupidity)

Well then, we’ll just have to hope they release the Japanese dub in the U.S. With regards to foreign movies, I usually try to watch the original dub too to hear it the way it was meant to, before I see the English version.

The Disney official site is up-and-swimmin’! A little simplistic, and I did wish they’d update it with more pictures and get the Character page out since it’s only one more week to its U.S. release, but at the moment it looks good.

There’s a cute game called “Ponyo the Rescue” which can be found under the ‘Game’ tab or in this direct link. I managed to save 34 of her sisters before I got zapped by ‘Squishy’. See if you can beat my score (I wussed out and chose the Easy level. ‘Hard’ is fun too).

I agree, I wish they had more…That game’s really addicting though! So far my best score is 39!
