Something I noticed in the trailer is that R?my seems to
sometimes contradict things he’s said earlier. The main instances being when:
- He says that it’s
tough for a rat to find food, and then later says that it’s easy to find food, just dangerous (not that big a
deal)
and 2) He says that it’s apparent he needs to rethink his life, and then when his brother (so I
assume) and father agree that he needs to rethink his life, he gets upset and tells them to let it go (somewhat
of a bigger deal, IMO).
Is this just an example of not-so-stellar screenwriting on the writer’s
(writers’) part(s), or do you think this might actually be a facet of R?my’s character that will be in the
actual movie. Personally, I find it a rather annoying character trait.
Anybody else noticed this, or want
to comment on it?
In the first instance, I
don’t think he contradicted himself. Maybe he was just clarifying himself on why finding good food is HARD to
find.
I mean, it’s hard because it’s dangerous. I think that’s simple
As for the rethinking
point, you may have something there, but I think it’s part of his character. He knows he SHOULD change, but if
he is, he’s not going to do because his family tells him too. He’s been able to feast on the good stuff and
lived to tell the tale, why should he change just now??
It sounds like a great character to me! The best
characters are grey, and for footage we’ll never see in the actual film, it’s a shame that we might never hear
that whiny “LET IT GO, DAD!!” in theatres next summer!
(But I hope we do!)
Yeah, I didn’t think that the first instance was that
big, either, but I figured I’d include it anyways.
It’s a sort of pride, really, even kind of similar to
the sort of thing Doc exhibits in Cars: R?my’s knows that it’s the case and says it when he’s delivering his
monologue to the audience, but when others say it, he can’t “bring himself down” to the level where
he’ll openly admit that they’re right.
I think it’s slightly annoying to me, but at the same time I
think that the fact that it’s very realistic and will definitely add to his character far outweighs that; it may
just annoy me in the trailer because the trailer is so short.
It’s a teaser. Teasers are always short, especially PIXAR’s.
Remember the Bug’s
Life Teaser?? A bunch of ants walking on a leaf which gives way because Heimlich ate the stem.
And THAT
was it!
I know
teasers are short; I was just saying that I hope the annoyingness of this quality is only annoying because it
can’t be fleshed out as well in a short teaser as in a feature-length film, and that it will not annoy me as
much in the film itself.
(“Oh, sorry! I didn’t know it was connected!”

DElf! Shame on you for questioning the quality of the
writing - Brad Bird wrote it! Have faith my friend!
On that note though, I think that’s part of his
character. Not putting his money where his mouth is. He thinks reasonably but he acts in extravagance. It’s
kinda like a commentary on the people that work at Pixar - they think rationally but they still strive to do
things over the top that an’t be done that make things just a tiny bit better - and despite the foolishness it
still works out.
Exactly. Nothing at PIXAR should make sense in the mind
of a business – from the way they advertise (lack of trailers) to the way they make movies (scooters) – but it
works!!
I think that it’s a little too
early to tell, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Remy is quite an unsettled character- he doesn’t know what he
wants in life, and when he does, he often changes his mind. That’s what it seems like so far, and I guess it
makes a change to all of these characters that know exactly what they’re doing and why.
Exactly – It’s like PIXAR’s first attempt at making a teenage ming or something!!
He actually kind of
reminds me of a less depressed version of Holden from Catcher In The Rye- if anyone else has read it, you’ll see
what I mean, as Holden always contradicts himself whilst telling his story, but actually becomes quite a lovable
character.
