Random question about Woody.

either way woody and andy were brought together by destiny and thats all there is to it how andy got woody the world may never know.

Well, that would mean another backstory for Woody with another owner(s). Not saying it’s wrong, it would just make things more complicated.

I’m still going with the story that Andy’s dad bought Woody new. In John Lasseter’s video, he mentions how the box is exactly the way Andy’s dad would’ve seen it when he bought Woody new. Still begs the question of why Andy’s dad bought Woody when he didn’t have a TV to watch Woody’s Roundup. It might’ve been that Woody was a bargain bin toy after the space craze kicked in, but if Woody sat too long, he would be like the Prospector. The destiny idea sounds pretty good right now.

as much as i want to know where woody comes from we can go on forever and never find out thats why i just blame destiny and be happy rather then hurting my brain thinking about it for days straight.

Dinoco, I’m sorry, but I really think Andy’s Dad didn’t buy Woody new in the package- if you listen to Lasseter’s monologue, he actually says “We always thought that Woody was kind of a hand me down from Andy’s father” and that “if Andy’s father were to buy him, this is how it would look” in describing the TSC Woody’s packaging.

Please note that it doesn’t say that Andy’s father in fact bout Woody new. Lasseter merely states that its what they (directors, artists presumably etc) would have thought Woody’s packaging would’ve looked like if Andy’s father had bought him new.

I’m a huge, giant English geek. :frowning: I apologize to you all.

I personally feel that, like a lot of you, regardless of how Andy received Woody, all that matters is that they were together and shared a lot of playtime, and that, as he states, Woody’s been Andy’s pal for as long as he can remember, and that’s what’s important  -Omar

Well, I guess that means they aren’t really clear on the subject themselves, but if anything, they were at least inferring it. But like I said earlier, another owner would just confuse things more. It would make sense if Woody was Andy’s father’s, and then handed down to Andy. It would explain a lot of his motives and such.

I think andys father bought woody new had him a little while and then before he passed or left he gave woody to andy it would also explain why woody tries so hard to stay with andy i think andys father may have even told woody take care of my boy or somthing before he gave him to andy and no he didnt see woody alive he just said it to him like you would say to a dog watch over thats what i think happend.

That’s a really good assumption. His likely death would also raise emotions between Andy and Woody.

After reading all you guys brilliant thoughts, I’ve conjured my own thought on how it may have happened. Andy’s dad had Woody when he was little, wether or not he watched the show. Woody meant a lot to him, similar to his relationship with Andy. As his dad got older he held on to Woody, again much like Andy, and like Andy was ready to take the sheriff with him to college for sentimental value, his father managed to hang on to him even as an adult. Woody is turned over to Andy, and becomes his favorite toy again part of the Sentimental deal, but also because he makes the perfect “Hero” character.

As we see, Andy hangs on to Woody, and his pals before the bittersweet handoff to Bonnie. Pixar has a way of “poetic justice” or whatever the proper term is, but time ironically has a way of repeating itself. Buzz is the “coolest toy ever” in Andy’s opinion, but Woody’s the one who made it into the College box.

But as many have mentioned earlier, Pixar focuses on the most important part of the story. Toy Story isn’t about Woody, and his history. It’s about the friendship between a kid and his toys, and what they’ll do to be there for him.

EDIT: But the interesting part is Woody refers to a lot of interesting things, like “A record player! I haven’t seen one of these things in ages.” and “Big toy on campus. I’ll see you at the sock-hop” But as I’ve mentioned before (and I bet others as well) I doubt that Andy’s been around a lot of record players.
