Randy Newman

I love Randy music,

I was watching CBS evening news tonight (10/5/2006) and they were playing ?You?ve got a friend in me? the Randy

Newman Lyle Lovett version when they were coming back from a commercial and then told a story about a man and his

dog, it was cool.

My favorite scores from Randy: Cars and Toy Story 2

My favorite song from

Randy: ?You?ve got a friend in me?

Oh yes, I agree. Randy Newman certainly has the musical touch. One reason why the Pixar films

are so charming is because of his scores. I used to bounce to You’ve Got a Friend in

Me when I first saw Toy Story; I didn’t know the name of the

composer until my mom told me that I “like Randy Newman’s music”. Ever since then, I’ve been hooked.

My favorite of his songs is Time In Your Life, followed by

You’ve Got a Friend in Me.

I like "You Got a

Friend in me" and “When She Loved Me”

Anything by Randy Newmans’s good. He’s so talented- he

was just born to make music, especially for Pixar films!

I love Randy Newman. He is probably my 3rd favourite Singer/Songwriter

number 1 being Jack Johnson and 2 being Brad Paisley.

My favourite Pixar soundtrack songs from him are

You’ve Got a Friend in Me and If I Didn’t Have You from Monsters Inc. I was really dissapointed that he didnt

sing a song in Cars.

I have got his Lonely at the Top soundtrack and it is awesome. He does such beautiful

songs like Louisiana 1927 and God’s Song, and also funny songs like Political Science and Short People.

Randy Newman does a great

job scoring. I like Randy Newman, Phil collins and bryan Adams, they did really god job on the movies they did.

Phil being Tarzan and Brother bear. Bryan Adams being Spirit Stallion

Randy Newman is AMAZING!! Somebody beat me to making a thread for him, hahaha! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m going to see

his concert in Toronto this coming Saturday… I just can’t wait! His songs always put a smile on my face, and I

love his film scores… not only Pixar, but others like The Natural and Seabiscuit. Very much an inspiration to

me.

The reason I wanted to make a thread about him is… did anybody see him as a guest on

the Colbert Report last night (Oct. 9th)? Hahaha, what a great show!

Colbert: And

singer/songwriter Randy Newman will be joining us tonight. whispers I told him this was a Pixar

movie!

And I loved how Stephen Colbert did a slow-motion walk to the desk while

Newman’s synthesized theme to The Natural was playing. I really hope that interview gets on YouTube soon!

EDIT: Yay! Here it is!

Wow, that was a great interview! Thanks for the link, Aggie.

Yeah he’s cool. I dont care much for his singing voice, but what he composes is really well done. Incidentally,

bits of the Cars score reminded me of Monster’s Inc. Not a lot, just enough to recognize that it was the same

composer. Did anyone else catch any familiarites there?

Not really. They are by the same guy, but Cars was soft

rock/country, while Monsters, Inc. was Swing/Jazz. I didn’t really see the

resemblance.

I like Randy Newman. His singing voice is cool and unique. You can tell when it’s Randy

singing, unlike all these carbon-copy R&B ‘stars’.

Aggie -

Ooo. I have to check that out later! Thanks for the link.

Mmm…yes. I did notice some similarities, actually. You know when Lightning tries to capture the stray tractor?

Well, the score in that scene is riminiscent of Randy Newman’s work in other Pixar films. You can really

hear/notice the similarities there, if you listen closely.

But of course. R&B role models better step out of

the way when Randy Newman shows up on the scene. One reason why I love his music so much is because it’s

original and “soft”. It takes you back to the old days…

Yay! I’m glad i’m not the only one

who noticed that! Incidentally, little bits of Cars reminded me a little of Toy Story as well. Go figure :stuck_out_tongue:

You’ve Got A Friend In Me is such a classic.
The Cars

score was pretty good, but didn’t blow me away like TI, Nemo and Bug’s Life did. I don’t have the Toy Story

scores in my mind right now, I will listen the next time more carefully!

I personally think this is Randy’s year to win an Academy Award for best Song/Score for a Pixar movie.

He should’ve won with You’ve Got a Friend In Me back in

'96/'97, hehe. But I agree that Our Town has a good chance of getting nominated… as for winning, it really

depends on what other songs make the cut.

Why shouldn’t he? His songs for the Pixar films continues to be underrated. He has been nominated each time,

yet never wins. I really want him to win. I love the guy and his music.

That’s what made his acceptance speech for 'If I

Didn’t Have You’ all the more sweeter… and well, funnier.

"Thank you. I don’t want your pity. I

want to thank first of all the music branch for giving me so many chances to be humiliated over the

years."

He may win this

year strictly as payback for that. That year he lost to “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas which you

really can’t blame them for. Disney was just past its peak and had dominated the song category for the last

several years (something like 10 nominations in 4 years) and then you had Pixar - this new start up company being

bold with this new CGI technology (not to mention the fact that John Laseter - and consequentially Pixar and Toy

Story - was already getting a special Oscar for the first ever full length CGI film while Pocahontas wasn’t up

for any other categoy (this was before the Best Animated Feature Award)). Now here we are 10 years later and we

see that he’s a well established and respected artist and Pixar is a power house in the industry with Jobs and

Lasseter being the two most powerful men in Hollywood. Also as we see “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” has

had much better staying power than “Colors of the Wind.” He may very well receive the Oscar simply as

a correction for the '96 Awards (as is often the case in the Oscars with someone receiving an award even though

they didn’t deserve it for that role but because they were overlooked in the past for a much more amazing

one).

Actually - my biggest fear is that Cars will dominate the song nominees taking 2-3 slots while 1 or

2 other songs like “Bring It” from Snakes on a Plane and “My Little Girl” from My Friend

Flicka round out the rest. Then the Cars songs split the vote allowing the other to take it. Hopefully with 3

Six Mafia winning last year the Academy won’t be too keen on voting for a rap song 2 years in a row. Hopefully

they’ll also be interested in voting for a country song with Dolly Parton losing the award last year but even

then you have to hold your breath that they still go with Newman over an established country artist like Tim

McGraw. Then of course there’s always the possibility the Brad Paisley sneaks his song in from Cars - at leas

that would split the Tim McGraw votes.

No matter what it will sure be interesting to watch. =)

I’m with Dash. There are several songs from

Cars that could get nominated. My head says “Our Town” would be the smart

choice, but my heart is torn between “Real Gone” and “Find Yourself”.

Decisions,

decisions…

Dash: That’s a very good way of looking

at it.

Despite it not being a Randy Newman song, my eyes would sparkle if ‘Real Gone’ was

nominated.
