I think this has a very good chance to win Best Animated Feature.

I too am pulling for Rango to win Best Animated Picture this years.
Well, by “everybody”, I feel that would be mostly snooty film critics who’d rather watch live-action movies made by a relatively unknown director from Albania starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio in a World War II tale set in Mumbai, India of two boxers who are really long-lost brothers but they just don’t know it and their journey into the heart of darkness that is the human condition and primal existentialism.
Most reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are written by critics who like Oscar-baits. Cars 2 has a lot of flaws, but it’s not as universally panned as most Cars fans like to believe. I went in extremely skeptical of it, and while some of my fears were not unfounded, I ended up liking it more than I should be.
The fact that you (and me, and a few Cars fans here) like it, doesn’t mean everybody hates it. And of course, “best animation studio in the world” is an opinion, but we all know that - I’m just being long-winded.
My point is, my opinion is that Cars 2 and Pixar are good. Just not great (for the latter, at the moment).
Anyway, I’m really happy that Rango is nominated for Best Animated Ghetto. Judging by how there’s hardly any noteworthy films this year (well, IMO, of course. Maybe I’m just not looking hard enough) aside from War Horse, Hugo and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, I’m kinda disappointed this little spaghetti western of the chameleon that kicked *ss didn’t get an ‘Up-style’ pity vote.
And I kinda wished it had a Best Original Score nod as well. I could listen to that soundtrack for hours.
Agreed, the soundtrack is the best element.
But at least it got strong contenders this year, so it wasn’t actually snubbed.
I would’ve liked Rango to get an Original Screenplay nod because it was marvellously well written. It was not my favourite animated film of last year by any means but if I give it something, it’s the writing.
defindancing: I agree the writing is superb. It is both a tribute and parody of the Spaghetti Western genre, and there were a couple of twists I didn’t see coming (like Rattlesnake Jake being double-crossed, etc.)
Oh, and just curious, what would your favourite animated film last year be, then?
SoA: It’s absolutely magnificent, the score. I teared up at the part where Rango strides back into town, reborn as the hero he always imagined himself to be, and the French horns swell to herald his glorious resurrection.

Rango won a BAFTA for best animated film, i guess thats a good sign.

Finally watched this a couple days ago. Absolutely loved it – I really can’t believe how good it was. I’d like to know how many avars they had on those facial rigs as I’ve never seen that amount of subtle nuances on a face in a key-framed animation before. FX animation and lighting were beautiful as well, and the voice acting was great. The only thing I thought fell short was the story. It’s certainly better than say, something from Dreamworks, but it wasn’t at a Disney or Pixar caliber (although everything else was). ILM has certainly shut anyone up who thinks they can only do shiny robots rolling around with swords.
Probably my favorite animated film of 2011.

I did like that movie. Some parts were good.
Just saw the movie for the first time yesterday. I liked it, and I loved how little it was for kids and didn’t try to hide the fact–in my opinion, a great step for mainstream western animation. It was hilarious, and watching it with me practical-Texas-native sister helped heighten the experience. However, if I was to give criticism, I didn’t think enough was made of the character Beans (I felt like the movie could have done just fine without her, even if I did like her) and the ending was very abrupt. It was like CLIMAX-30 seconds resolution-end.
Best of lucks to Rango today.
Only Animated film of the nominees I think deserves the prize.
