Did Mabel manage to shoot Remy’s mom, offscreen & unnoticed?
NO FLAMING/INSULTS, please!
Well, I actually thought that. Notice that when Django says “What’s taking those kids so long?”, he happens to be telling this to another rat. I think that’s Remy’s mom.
And I believe she died because she wasn’t visible in the rat clan’s home in Paris, nor did she get involved with stopping Remy’s crazy dreams.
I told my father about this, and he doesn’t believe this theory. He even jokingly dubbed me as “The Grim Viewer”. Maybe he’s right, I could have seen Bambi too much.
You know, it is a very interesting theory. Let me put together a chart for all of you, to see if anyone here has the answer… …wait a minute, lemme think…OMG… I’M A GENIUS! Okay, maybe not, but here’s one theory (I prefer named theories)
The Brown Rat Theory:
Remy has blue fur, and Emile’s fur is brown. Django is blue. You can’t have “baby rats” (or whatever they’re called) if there is not a male and a female. Emile’s mom must have existed if he exists, and since Django is blue, then Emile’s mother (and Remy’s mom, and Django’s wife) must have been brown.
Okay, K9Girl’s gonna check out YFTR in that “baby rat” scene to see if the other rat was brown…
EDIT: In YFTR, see that scene where a blue rat (which, btw, looks a LOT like Django) is holding paws with another rat, a BROWN rat? Hmmm…
To clarify a bit, Remy does have a mother (obviously), and whether she got killed or not is impossible to know for now. Well her name was Desiree, and she was going to be part of Jan Pinkava’s version of Ratatouille. A mother of 200, who always kept track of her children, she got written off because they wanted to keep the story more father/son oriented. She was a brown rat so A113 is right there, she also had long eyelashes, she was chubby, and held a match (for some reason?). Anyways, remy_must_save_henri, your theory seems extremely unlikely because Django would’ve seemed sad and mentioned/implied the death if it had happened, which he didn’t. So those are the facts, with a sprinkle of my opinion.
What in the name of the flying spaghetti monster?!?!
I googled Desiree Ratatouille and I found out that she was mentioned in “The Art of Ratatouile”. Too bad I can’t find this piece of interesting merchandise.
Huh. I did wonder where Remy’s mother was but I never actually thought about the answer to the question. I dont think she died because I kinda thought they would have made reference to that. I dont know. I suppose it’s possible. Maybe she died long before the story took place…
Then who was that rat Django had spoken to?
Is this rat his mom’s twice removed cousin’s clan leader’s son’s third worst enemy’s fifth best friend? Eh?
A while ago (before this topic was published), I had actually thought of writing a story about Remy’s mom and what happened to her. That story would explain that she was kidnapped by French NIMH scientists (who would mutate her into a NIMH rat) when Remy was very young. It was inspired by one of my favorite childhood novels, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.
I ditched it because I realized that I’m not so fond of prequels.

A113, would you like me to PM you what the FSM is? I promise NOT to use wikipedia!

cracks knuckles Remy’s mom? shrugs who knows. Perhaps she divorced Django ^0^
But seriously heh…one thing I wonder is…how come Remy and Emile’s names seem so distant from their father’s? Perhaps they were named by their mother. Know a bit OC, but follow me here…if the above is true, meant that she was still with the clan when Remy and Emile were born. And given the fact both of them are young, even more so.
Doubt she was killed…Mabel may have been a good shot in the war but she was a bit trigger happy enough to bring down her room heh heh…no no…I think Remy’s mother may very well be somewhere else…or died giving birth maybe (200 kids girls…) to Remy and Emile…hard to say really…
Though…given Django’s views…Remy probably got more of his personality from his mother (which meant that she was with him growing up). I mean come on…Django and Remy argue nearly all the time on rat matters so he probably had mommy to back him up heh heh…hmm…ah…well there’s something to consider heh.
sigh Time to post a link to what I believe is the BEST Ratatouille fic of all time, and one which I like to believe is closest to the ‘truth’ on this subject:
I kinda adopted the idea she had died too, which would obviously be a serious element to Django’s “prejudice” against humans. I created my own mother character named Caresse. (http://dolphinmoana.deviantart.com/art/Concept-Drawings-Caresse-70931999) I’m not particulary sure if she got shot, but I wouldn’t know… I’ve personally created a diagram of “Remy’s family tree”, but I digress. I wanna see Desiree too… (is Art-of-Ratatouille-less. )
On a side note, I’ve always watched the “rat bait shop” scene with her in mind. It’s that look Django has when he looks up at the window.
I like to think he’s thinking about her. I seem to be a bit of a shipper for a couple that’s kinda missing a half.
CGI Clownfish
Actually that is a good addtion there. The obvious dislike of humans Django has toward humans may be because of an event with Desiree. Though I do believe his age and experience may have evolved his dislike, I do think the former is a possibility of course.
Oh, THANK YOU for posting that picture! I absolutely loved seeing it and taking the time to really look. I love the details like the narrowed eyes and the hand curled into a fist. Thank you thank you thank you! I’m just looking and looking…
Heehee, glad you liked it. I’ve just taken a bunch of screencaps of the characters whenever I’ve seen an interesting facial expression or posture. So that one of Django was already taken.
Okay, I think I figured it out. Maybe the mom died when Remy and Emile were so young they don’t remember it (or maybe they were just young enough to just not have been told how it happened), and Django kept it kinda low-key the whole time. But once Remy actually started defending humans and told his dad that he’s “been able to observe them at a close-ish sort of range”, Django decided that it was time to show him some tough love and show him what the harsh reality of it was (enter rat bait scene).
I read that story you posted the link to, putmoneyinthepurse. The whole family structure explanation in that one was well thought out, but it seemed a little complicated for a Pixar story to me. I loved the writing though, and I LOVED how the writer (he/she?) made Django that much more distant of a father. I seem to be turning into a Django fan… He’s imtimidating and demands respect, but you know he really does love his boys.
On a side note, I’m kinda working on a oneshot centered on Django… It’s kind of a practice run for the sequel I was talking about writing.
I know, I know, I’m just introducing new possibilities like, maybe she’s in there in the background, or in the crowds, we just don’t see her, because we don’t need to, she probably added nothing important to the story.
