Request for Help: Need Scientific Guidance.

Hopefully there is Science person kind enough to help me out on a story I’m writing.

I have been searching all over the Internet but sufficient info is not given to me. I’ve been watching Youtube videos of oxygen tank explosions.

The premise of the futuristic sci-fic story I’m writing involves a giant spacecruiser with deteriorating oxygen generators. The citizens of the ship are rather adapted to the low oxygen environment and survive well. Their faces have tints of blue from minute suffocation and they wear atomic head mikes to amplify their voices. And they wear some weights on their arms and legs to balance out the effects of mircogravity.

The protagonist travels there from Earth for a visit. Because he is not adaptated to the low-oxygen environment, he is forced to don an oxygen mask connected to a tank.

So the questions:

What sort of oxygen tank will be ideally used for the protagonist?
The impact of oxygen tank explosion when the tank is overheated? I have been viewing Youtube video of tank explosions.
How heavy would the tank be? At one point, I decided he would carry it on his back back, or roll it around on wheels.

My goal is just to avoid Fridge Logic. I will be asking more questions.

In return I give you… uhhh, the least I can do is write something nice on Deviantart, that’s just about it.

Sorry, I can’t help you bud. I know my fill of Agriculture Science, but not about oxygen tanks.

Well, first it would help to know whether the story is set in the present or the future.
I’m going to assume it’s in the future.

Ideally, the protagonist would want to use one that will provide sufficient oxygen for how long he will be on board the ship. If that’s not possible, multiple ones of shorter duration, or one that can be refilled on his space ship would be fine.

The oxygen explosion… interesting, I’m seeing 2 possibilities and I will explain the impact of both.

  1. The oxygen tanks of the ship: I know there is oxygen generators, but they have to store excess oxygen somewhere, right? This would inevitably cause the people on the ship to die since the gaping whole in the ship would expose people to the vacuum of space. The only survivor would be the protagonist since he has an oxygen tank, but I’m not sure if you plan on giving him a way to move through space if this is true.
  2. The tank is the protagonist’s: He would die. Anyone close would die, and a weak fire would be started and would probably use up all of the oxygen in the ship, or the fire will be put out by someone. If it’s not, then two things could happen: the oxygen will be gone, and people would die, or the fire will reach the engine and cause it to overheat and blow up.

Since you said “the oxygen generators” I’m assuming you meant option 2, but it could go either way. I hope I helped.
