Rex is probably my favorite besides Buzz and Woody.
He’s so neurotic, and silly, and Wallace Shawn has his voice so clumsy and lovable. And he’s so dismissed by Potato Head and some others, I just love underdogs. And the fact he loves his friends so much. I almost jumped out of my seat in excitement when Rex was [spoil]a huge, force-field dog eating dinosaur[/spoil] in Toy Story 3. He finally got his time to shine as the menace like a Tyrannosaurus.
But it really humbles me with how hilarious he can be, even in the most perilous situations, particularly in 3. His line, [spoil]“He held me… he actually HELD me!!!”[/spoil] literally broke my heart in two, to hear someone that joyful so sad. And when he [spoil]saved the toys from the garbage bag[/spoil]… friggin hilarious. And his line, “[spoil]Maybe Andy… doesn’t care about us anymore.[/spoil]”
And of course, his reactions in the… climax broke my heart again. His fearful and fast look back and forth in shock really made me so sad. And he just… that nod with Potato Head… said a million words of apology and forgiveness to me.
But Rex is bottom line hilarious, and a very sweet dinosaur. If the credits are any indication, he’s [spoil]gonna have an even funnier future with a certain Internet addict[/spoil]! Viva Rex!
