Rio (2011)

I like that picture of Nigel and the globe! I’ll check out youtube tommorrow, thanks for the update!

You’d best check it out ASAP, EJE! Banner ads rarely last more than 24 hours on Youtube- it’s still playing now, but I’m betting it won’t be there for long! :sunglasses:

Oh, and coincidentally Rio’s four-day carnaval is reaching its conclusion tomorrow. I’m reading my copy of the SMH here with some beautiful pictures of the parade… ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’, as the cariocas call it, had “a stadium crowd of 70,000… Nearly 800,000 tourists, Brazilian and foreign, were taking part in the event alongside most of Rio’s population of 6 million.” [AFP] According to the less reliable source of Wikipedia: “The consumption of beer accounts for 80% of annual consumption and tourism receives 70% of annual visitors.” :open_mouth: And, “some 50,000 police have been deployed to clampdown on crime.” [AFP]

Also, I’ve found out the song used in the trailers. It’s an old dance number from the 90s with some rather suggestive lyrics… Boom Boom Boom by the Outhere Brothers.

If you want to hear Nigel’s song in different languages, here’s a link!
rio-themovie.com/nigelssong/

Here are my favourite voices (some of Nigel’s alternate names are in parenthesis):

Nigel: Italian (Miguel), Brazilian, Dutch, Russian, Cantonese (Lai Bei Zhou), Mandarin, French (Hector), Latin American Spanish (Pepillo)

Blu: German, Dutch, Swedish, Cantonese, Russian, French, Latin American Spanish

Jewel: Brazilian, Korean, Cantonese, French, Castilian Spanish, Latin American Spanish

‘Worst’ Nigel voices: Korean, Swedish, Castilian Spanish

By worst, I mean this in a subjective manner (I thought the voice was flat, there was not enough pitch or cadence, etc.). The voices are still pretty decent, and perhaps the native speakers of the language will appreciate it more.

Too bad they don’t have a Japanese dub, but it’s really a great move on the Rio marketing team to upload all the various languages to reflect the cultural diversity of Rio, or at the very least, to appeal themselves to potential viewers from various markets who are curious about their local (and other countries’) dubs!

Nice.

Nigel’s my favorite voice in this movie. I’m a big fan of Jermaine Clement and Flight of the Choncords, so it’s awesome seeing his voice coming out of that bird!

I’m trying to not spoil myself concerning trailers and stuff. I’m gonna see it in the cinema… if I remember

Didja guys have a listen to the other dubs? I really wish I can rewatch my favourite films in other dubs (I have Ratatouille in the French dub for example, and I’m looking for a copy of Kung Fu Panda in Mandarin).

If you’re a fan of Riomovie on FB, you’d have seen the photos of Rio’s alegoria (float) at the recent Carnival.

Naturally, Carlos Saldanha gets his special seat as the destaque (VIP).

Apparently, the float was a special request from the Mayor himself to the renowned samba school Salgueiro, which makes for an interesting mix of business, entertainment, and politics.

Here’s a link to a recent article on Saldanha, if anyone can read Portugese.

The Brazillian poster (unfortunately I don’t have in a higher resolution).

And last, but not least, two new clips of Blu’s attempts to romance Jewel. Needless to say, both of them will end in abject failure. Poor Blu. 8D

I cringed while watching Nigel’s song… I can’t really explain why, but this just didn’t work for me. AT ALL.

It vaguely reminded me of Party Time from the animated movie of Titanic. Although I honestly don’t know why. Nigel’s song is at least a lot better, I’ll give em that.

Anyway, I’m going to stop watching all those new clips. I know how this is going, I’d have seen half of the movie already before it even comes out! Which I HATE. So… yeah, no more spoilers for me.

You’re on top of it thedriveintheatre, as usual! Thanks for all those links, I forgot how much I love the Portuguese language! (no, I don’t know it! I can kind of understand a little, because of knowing a bit of Spanish) I’d really love to learn Portuguese someday!

EJE: How can you forget? You’ve been wanting to learn Portugese according to another thread you posted in! :stuck_out_tongue: Anyway, yeah, you’re welcome, I’m just such a geek that I keep checking for updates in my downtime.

Czarine: Yeah, after repeated viewings, I realise it could’ve been done with more panache… like Dr Facilier’s ‘Friends on the Other Side’ or Scar’s ‘Be Prepared’… here, Nigel comes off as a second-rate villain, no matter how much he claims to the contrary.

I really hope he is more than just a comic-relief bad guy… if you’ve seen the clip I’m posting below, you can see he’s not very effective at doing his job. Hopefully he’ll up the ante later on in the movie and cross his moral event horizon.

Here’s another clip, this time an extension from the trailer of their escape sequence from the poachers and Nigel. One thing I would like to mention here: I am really proud that Blue Sky chose to include the favelas in the movie. I think I mentioned a few posts back that if they did this, it would be a really courageous thing. Short of showing drug lords with semi-automatics, I think they did a true-to-life portrayal of Rio’s slums, and of course, its denizens of different races and backgrounds who share two things in common: extreme poverty, and a strong sense of camaraderie over a game of football.

Also, does anyone think that the music sounds a little like ‘Colette Shows the Ropes’ from Ratatouille?

I kind of go threw phases of languages and cultures I’m interested in (my list of languages I’d like to learn does include Portuguese, but I think I posted like 6 othere as well!) So yes, Portuguese has been in the back of my mind for a while, but now that this movie has been getting me excited, I’ve rekindled my Portuguese love! (a couple years ago I was obsessed with The Three Caballeros! That started my Portuguese/Spanish culture love interest)

I saw the trailer for Rio again today, before Rango, and all I can say is that I still don’t feel it,

The sky-high excitement? The ‘trills’? The height of suspense? Of two fine-feathered lovebirds, thrown together in an exotic land, inseparable, searching for freedom, for adventure, for romance? You don’t feel it?
Hmmm… gotta lay off the puns. Makes me sound… chirpy.

How ambitious. Can you say Nandos?

yes, you do… I know I will finish watching this in theaters, but and I don’t feel excited or impatient for its release, it doesn’t look attracting for me yet, but what I am sure now, is that Rio will be more successful than Rango and Hop, at least in money terms

hoping to be surprised with the final product

Fairy 'Nuff, mate.

you know, the closer it gets to the release date, the more i feel like i kind of want to see this. it looks cute.

Glad to hear it! I’ll be seeing it on it’s release night (for my Birthday! April 15th Baby!)

Right-o, I’m seeing this on the big screen, but that means travelling all the way to Utrecht because our local cinema is a jerk that only shows stuff in Dutch. ARGH!

Guess I need to take my dad then…

About the movie, I suddenly realize why I seem to be excited so much… all the COLORS! I mean, nowadays and especially in video games, everything is drably colored in shades of brown and gray. Rio looks to be one big colourful movie, and that’s exactly what I needed. Thank you, Blue Sky!

ia. the colors are really, really pretty. i might see this ~just for that. the whole thing just looks really colorful and fun. :'DD

I really think the strong visual style and the joie de vie spirit is what is going for Rio at the moment. Never have I seen such a bright and fun movie since Finding Nemo or Up.

So the TV spots are starting to air Down Under now! I heard it played yesterday while I was in my room and my bro was outside watching telly, and I saw the same spot a few minutes ago. That usually means it’s less than a few weeks away (7th April, that’s a fortnight from now). I’m so excited.

I’m a bit miffed that they have spoiled several scenes in the spot I saw- I’m fairly certain [spoil]the airplane will be the climax of the movie, they revealed how Blu sends Nigel out of the plane, and it’s Wall-E-Escape-Pod-style![/spoil] I think it’ll be as cool as Harrison Ford’s “Get off my plane” moment of awesome from Air Force One. I’m also glad that the [spoil]cable cars from Sugar Loaf[/spoil] will be featured in this movie, the last time I saw that Rio landmark in a film was when [spoil]Roger Moore was fighting Jaws in Moonraker[/spoil]!

For anyone who’s interested, Blueskywhite has uploaded several clips and TV spots from the movie. I’ve had a peek, and there’s no major spoilers, but if you want to go in to this movie ‘blind’, then I advise you refrain from watching (although again, it’s mostly minor spoilers like a few funny scenes and some new characters and stuff).
