Shakes the rattle = Lotso?

According to Lee,

“He was originally supposed to have appeared in the first two ‘Toy Story’ movies,” Lee said. “But for one reason or another, Lotso’s part kept getting cut. But as we’ve learned at Pixar over the years, good ideas never dies. And given what a great part Lotso has in ‘Toy Story 3,’ it really was worth the wait to get this character just right.”

So now Im wondering why we havnt heard of him before. the only character that was cut that we know of (at least that I can remember from the extras) was Shakes the rattle. You’ll see him in one of the early storyboarded scenes warning the toys about what kids can do to toys, telling horror stories about the things he witnessed. I think he was a lion, but my memory’s a bit fuzzy. maybe I’ll dig out my ultimate toy box and refresh my memory…

but do you guys think shakes was the precurser to Lotso?

Edit: Okay here we go, he was a tiger aparantly.

Maybe…but wasn’t the prospector mostly Shakes the Rattle? They both had the same motives/ideas about how being a toy doesn’t last, you’ll just get discarded eventually or thrown away.

No because the piture above wasn’t shakes he told the story about what sid did to shakes he was just warning all the toys to stay away from sid.

I think he was implying it was him though. If you have the scene handy, listen, he says “I…he got off lucky”.

And clearly he himself is a rattle.

It’s too early to make any clear decisions, but I’d wager that the character of Shakes the Rattle got split off into both the Prospector and Lotso. Shakes was a very complex character, he used to be Andy’s favorite toy when he was a child but was then grown out and forgotten about, and grew into a child resenting toy like the Prospector. But I think in this film, it’s a good guess that since Lotso is the daycare favorite, perhaps he will mirror the early years of Shakes, back when he used to be played with Andy. Perhaps he will also try to attack Andy’s toys as well in order to preserve his favorite toy status in Sunnyside. I dunno, this is just WildMassGuessing.

yeah i got the 10 year aniversity version in my room. I ove how they updated the film in that version.

Update? there weren’t any changes other than bitrate in the 10th anniversary one.

thats what I meant still learning all there is about technology I plan on woring as a animator when grow up.

I know this is an old thread but, after actually seeing Toy Story 3 I’ve decided that Lotso isn’t shakes the rattle, but Chuckles is.

Think about it, they both sit on the windowsill and tell the story of their tragic past to both the characters and the audience.

Anyone else agree?

Yes, I think that’s about right.

Yeah, Chuckles hit me the second the camera panned around to him as being Shakes for some reason

I thought Shakes was never seen, even in the storyboards. I don’t know the name of the tiger rattle toy that you posted a picture of, but he was the one who told about Shakes’ demise.

And he’s definately an inspiration for Chuckles. He had no ill intentions, he just existed as a warning to the others, and to fill them in.

Plus, they even had concept art for Lotso very early in production. But, I guess he still could be an inspiration for the final Lotso.

There was an early test for Lotso in Toy Story 1 when Woody his giving his announcments. I guess his pink fur didn’t look real enough.

Didn’t Lee actively deny that, though? I mean, I thought that at first, too.

Do we have clips or anything of that?

Heh, I’m pretty sure I’m the one who started that rumor on the Sideshow forums before I came here. The bear in question was officially dubbed ‘Teddy.’

He appears during the staff meeting, when Woody checks if the toys on the shelf can hear him (all indicators show he’s Molly’s toy). He also appears on the Al’s Toy Barn commercial in Toy Story 2.

Thanks for bringing this old thread up. I had never heard of Shakes the Rattle, now I think it’s super interesting!

Boy, they’ve sure come far between making Teddy and Lotso haven’t they?

is it me, or does the doll on the left look like the Mermaid/Pool Girl from knick knack?:

Nice catch Cleanmonk! She and her mermaid counterpart pop up in quite a few Pixar movies!
