“He was originally supposed to have appeared in the first two ‘Toy Story’ movies,” Lee said. “But for one reason or another, Lotso’s part kept getting cut. But as we’ve learned at Pixar over the years, good ideas never dies. And given what a great part Lotso has in ‘Toy Story 3,’ it really was worth the wait to get this character just right.”
So now Im wondering why we havnt heard of him before. the only character that was cut that we know of (at least that I can remember from the extras) was Shakes the rattle. You’ll see him in one of the early storyboarded scenes warning the toys about what kids can do to toys, telling horror stories about the things he witnessed. I think he was a lion, but my memory’s a bit fuzzy. maybe I’ll dig out my ultimate toy box and refresh my memory…
but do you guys think shakes was the precurser to Lotso?
Maybe…but wasn’t the prospector mostly Shakes the Rattle? They both had the same motives/ideas about how being a toy doesn’t last, you’ll just get discarded eventually or thrown away.
It’s too early to make any clear decisions, but I’d wager that the character of Shakes the Rattle got split off into both the Prospector and Lotso. Shakes was a very complex character, he used to be Andy’s favorite toy when he was a child but was then grown out and forgotten about, and grew into a child resenting toy like the Prospector. But I think in this film, it’s a good guess that since Lotso is the daycare favorite, perhaps he will mirror the early years of Shakes, back when he used to be played with Andy. Perhaps he will also try to attack Andy’s toys as well in order to preserve his favorite toy status in Sunnyside. I dunno, this is just WildMassGuessing.
I thought Shakes was never seen, even in the storyboards. I don’t know the name of the tiger rattle toy that you posted a picture of, but he was the one who told about Shakes’ demise.
And he’s definately an inspiration for Chuckles. He had no ill intentions, he just existed as a warning to the others, and to fill them in.
Plus, they even had concept art for Lotso very early in production. But, I guess he still could be an inspiration for the final Lotso.
Heh, I’m pretty sure I’m the one who started that rumor on the Sideshow forums before I came here. The bear in question was officially dubbed ‘Teddy.’
He appears during the staff meeting, when Woody checks if the toys on the shelf can hear him (all indicators show he’s Molly’s toy). He also appears on the Al’s Toy Barn commercial in Toy Story 2.
