I enjoyed the first Shrek, but I lost interest as each sequel came out. There is only so many sequels one can do. It would be different, I think, if they actually had some good, solid story lines. Dreamworks relies heavily on humor. That’s their niche and Pixar’s is the story.
I’m indifferent about the SHrek movies. I like the “dirty” and “edgy” humor they use, but idk. Theres something about it im not to fond of and i cant put my finger on it.
Ohhhh Shrek…I think i’ll take this opportunity to vent about shrek a little bit.
When i was younger and the movie first came out, it did strike me as somewhat of a revelation. And i enjoyed it a little bit for what it was. Although this was before i was fully grown up and such…well, more grown up…at least.
There are two things that killed off any interest i had in shrek. One was the fact that i had to watch the movie 3 TIMES in one day at school! Mix that with people talking along with the movie and it’s enough to drive any relatively sane person up the wall.
The second thing that bugs me is the tone of the movie, and how it suddenly decides to change half way through. I would have applauded the films efforts if it had managed to make a decent satire out of disney’s style of animation and storytelling for the whole movie. But somewhere in the middle it decides that the film should take shape and have an equally happy, lovey-dovey ending like many of disney’s movies. To me this always seemed like hypocrisy. You can’t mock a style of film-making for a good hour or so and then decided that you want to be just like it. That’s why it fails for me, it could have been one or the other. It tired to choose both, and for me it kind of fell flat on its face.
And then sequels to me, appear to be directors making the most out of what is essentially an experiment in getting more money. I would like the think that the filmmakers try and make something that is half watchable out what is essentially an exercise in making more of the big green, by selling the big green.
With that said, my shrek watching days ended at the first movie. I refused to go and see the second, and only on christmas day was i forced to watch the third movie. Which seemed to be packed full of the usual dreamworks book of film making ideas. Essentially, put in a pop culture reference every ten minutes to a somewhat flimsy narrative. And make sure everyone’s favorite character is spewing catch phrases left and right!
I think it’s safe to gather that i quite dislike the movies
I’ve just never really enjoyed their cynicism. But this is ultimately just my opinion, I can also understand exactly why people would enjoy the shrek franchise
Hmm, i’ve probably been a bit too harsh on the old film methinks!
